Maybe this is already a topic…but let’s revisit the subject! What’s everyone’s favorite (and least favorite) soap openings past or present?
For a while, I was trying to watch all 4 soaps (nowadays, I’ve unfortunately just decided to focus on GH). But of the 4 soaps, I liked the BB opening the most. I like how the billing order. BB really benefits from its small cast because it seemed like all the regular cast members were credited. But I just like how the 2 “veterans” are credited first, followed by Thorsten and then Heather Tom has her own little thing. So, yeah, I liked that one.
However, my all time favorite is the AMC opening (not the last 2 new ones, but the one they had for like 10 years before those). I love the music. I like how we see all the cast members. I like how Susan Lucci appears in the beginning and the end. I actually watched AMC a few times before ABC cancelled it. It was the first and only soap I watched a lttle before this year.August 15, 2014 at 9:52 am #427341
Of the current soaps, the CBS shows have the better openings, but I am not overwhelmed by any of them. For me, positive characteristics of an opening (or closing) include good music, closeups of the performers, scenes from past shows, and/or a visible listing of actor names.
Back in the day, I liked a lot of the openings and closings for east coast soaps. I think overall “Guiding Light” was my favorite. They changed music and format often, so some were better than others. I love the GL opening from 83-85, and the GL closing from the 90s. I also like the ATWT closing from the mid to late 90s. The closings that showed extra footage as the credits rolled were nice as well.August 15, 2014 at 4:01 pm #427343
I generally liked a lot of the older soap openings I would see, but my favorite was Another World, I suppose in the early-mid 90s, when they had that great theme song and that portraitized scenes of the various characters. I could have watched that play over and over again. Of the current openings, I like B&B a lot, and I think it’s an excellent representation of how visually appealing the show is. I also enjoy Y&R, but their revolving door of cast members makes it kind of a drawback that you only get six actors per day, and sometimes they are six actors you don’t know all that well and/or don’t like all that much. I don’t really like what GH has going now. The DAYS opening is classic, and while it’s not the most exciting thing in the world, I hope they never change it.August 15, 2014 at 7:46 pm #427344
^ I agree with all that. I can’t blame Days because at least they’ve consistently used the same opening since the beginning with the same narration. GH’s opening is not good. You can’t see any of the actors. The music isn’t all that great.
Y&R’s theme always made me hum…but, yeah, it’s unfortunate they only (randomly) highlight a few of the actors.
I just watched the GL 80’s opening. The music is great…but I think I prefer when it’s not just clips from the episodes (I don’t even like when primetime shows do it…Disney channel!)August 16, 2014 at 2:44 am #427346
The Peabo Bryson-led opening for OLTL is my all-time fav followed by the photo album for AMC and the ’90s opening used for “Loving.”August 16, 2014 at 9:02 pm #427347
The Peabo Bryson-led opening for OLTL is my all-time fav followed by the photo album for AMC and the ’90s opening used for “Loving.”
That One Life to Live opening theme started in 1984 or 1985. I absolutely loved it! (For opening credits, which were modern, and for the theme music.) I think it ran through a part of 1991.
That leads me to this: The worst were those unrelated, ad-like (perfume, romance novel, or whatever) themes for OLTL and Loving circa 1991 and after (up until 1994 or 1995). The New Age Jazz crap. The models who are not actors and not regulars on a soap. Followed by a series’ logo. Those were the worst!
I selected The Young and the Restless with having in mind theme music best-suited to the identity of a given series. “Nadia’s Theme” isn’t the only one I genuinely love. But I can’t name any other soaps’s theme music that beats it.
I selected Ryan’s Hope for the opening credits because of capturing the heart and soul of the series.
One series which also was a kick (but not always): The Edge of Night (later named Edge of Night).August 17, 2014 at 7:28 pm #427348
Thanks adamunc! That is indeed the very GL opening I mentioned! The music is great and the clips provide a sense of the characters and overall spirit of the show.
“Ryan’s Hope” had a nice, very quaint opening. “The Edge of Night” opening was hot. The AW opening was fun. It put a smile on my face… so upbeat! The Days opening is a classic. I still remember, “This is MacDonald Carey…” Y&R is also classic but they probably could squeeze in a few more actors. The current GH opening is weak. I can hardly even make out the faces. A high school video-production student could do better. I liked the Dave Koz opening from the 90s.
I think opening and closing credits are a big deal. It’s part of the ritual of watching a show. I dislike the lack of time and effort reflected by most of the current openings. As for the closings, they are basically nonexistent which is a lost opportunity for artistic and thematic expression as well as a disservice to the cast and crew.August 17, 2014 at 8:27 pm #427349
In no particular order
B&B first opening with the photos, GL’s “Hold On to Love”, OLTL’s tour of Llanview, “Port Chalrles” telenovela openings, GH’s “Faces of the Heart”, “Passions” theme song, and “Loving”‘s “L-O-V-I-N-G”. Honorable mention to AMC’s reintorducing of the photo book (2002-2004).
Dishonorable mentions goes Y&R. The first when they pulled that madness with the remixed theme with the cast posing for the camera and when LML tried it with her “Clear Springs” opening. Like DS0816 said, “Nadia’s Theme” is iconic so the messing with the theme was jarring.
Another bad one was the Frons synergy when all of the soaps had the same conciet for their openings.August 26, 2014 at 6:39 pm #427350
All-Time my favorite is from “Loving”, and it’s the Jeffery Osborne opening with the birdcage and the birdcage… I espeically love the lyrics “the one thing we should treasuer now and forever is L-O-V-I-N-G”…
I also loved the “satin sheets” opening from “One Life To Live”
Currently, my favorite is the timeless, simple “DOOL” hourglass.
and I also loved this one:
