CBS Daytime’s 30-minute sudser is about to be Hope-less. Kim Matula has opted to vacate the popular, central role of Hope Logan Spencer.
Word is the blonde beauty has been making noise about wanting to focus on primetime and film for some time. Matula assumed the role of the SORASed daughter of fashion plate Brooke Logan (Katherine Kelly Lang) and her ex-son-in-law Deacon Sharpe (Sean Kanan) in 2010.
Showrunner Brad Bell proved a master of archetype by having the daughters of mortal enemies Brooke Logan and Dr. Taylor Hayes (Hunter Tylo) inherit their penchant for squabbling over the same men. Opposite Jacqueline MacInnes Wood, who portrayed Taylor’s daughter Steffy Forrester until 2013, Matula drove many of B&B‘s frontburner tales over the past four years.
At the center of the Hope vs. Steffy feud for much of its run was Liam Spencer (Scott Clifton), long-lost son of ruthless publishing tycoon Dollar Bill (Don Diamont). When MacInnes Wood left to pursue other opportunities, the show brought on Days of Our Lives grad Darin Brooksas Liam’s half-brother Wyatt. B&B quickly re-centered the “A “story triangle with two guys fighting over the girl, as opposed to two girls scratching one another’s eyes out over the boy.
Currently, Hope finds herself pregnant with a baby everyone assumes is Wyatt’s, and contending with her unstable mother-in-law Quinn (Rena Sofer). Meanwhile, Liam is attempting to move on with Steffy’s brunette, lookalike step-cousin from Australia, Ivy Forrester (Neighbour‘s Ashleigh Brewer).
The Bold and the Beautiful confirmed news of Matula’s exit on Twitter.
I’ll be sad to see Matula go. She’s grown into quite the consummate leading lady during her time on B&B.
The good news for the international hit serial is, the messy entanglements of step-brothers Rick (Jacob Young) and Ridge (Thorsten Kaye), and the varying women in their lives, are causing plenty of heat in the bedrooms and boardrooms of the soap’s highly-fictional version of Los Angeles.
Do you think B&B should quickly recast Hope, or should they rest the character for awhile? Sound off in the comments!November 5, 2014 at 9:51 pm #427521
This is too bad. She was great.November 5, 2014 at 11:59 pm #427522
Yeah, I saw earlier that Scott Clifton also confirmed this stunning news via his Twitter page. So sad to learn that Matula is leaving. For a young actress of her caliber, I suppose it was inevitable and just a matter of time before she’d want to venture and pursue opportunities outside of daytime; I just didn’t expect it’d be this soon.
I just can’t imagine the role of Hope ever being recast. Matula has made Hope too much her own.November 6, 2014 at 8:05 am #427523
This is a shame for B&B, but I wish Matula all the best. She’s done some excellent work on B&B, a great talent with a natural presence.
As much as I think she was great at playing Hope, I do think the role could be recast, as long as the show was willing to take the time and find an actress who is a good fit. But I’m torn between thinking that Hope is too central to just let slip from the canvas and feeling like maybe this gives B&B the opportunity to get off the Hope/Liam merry-go-round and push a different or new character as the young female lead.November 6, 2014 at 12:10 pm #427524
The character is pivotal.
Either recast Hope … or send Liam and Wyatt off the canvas as well.
By comparison to Hope, the character Steffy should not be recast. Steffy is not needed. Not now.
Hope is vital; she’s been front and center with other characters in her life.
Actress Kim Matula deserves good things. I wish her the best. But, her character is too important right now to be denied physical presence on The Bold and the Beautiful. So, I think a recast will happen. And I hope that Matula’s successor will be, well, successful playing the role.November 6, 2014 at 1:25 pm #427525
Miscarriage and leaving is too much like Steffy. Birth and leaving would be weird but birth /divorce / job in NY? Maybe. Leaving with Wyatt o get away from quinn may be good! They just had a recast of ridge so final decision may be a recast. Even if there’s a post finnigan Bridget 2 style temp Hope.November 6, 2014 at 7:19 pm #427526
I’d like to see a daytime soap present us a new recast by showing the predecessor in a hot passionate sex scene with his/her screen partner … and, in the middle of the action, have the replacement emerge.
Imagine the execution with that scene!
Didn’t Days of Our Lives once do something similar … a shower scene (or something)?
By the way: This also goes for same-sex soap couples. (I’m not limiting my suggestion to opposite-sex pairings.)November 6, 2014 at 8:02 pm #427527
^^ That would actually be totally Brad Bell’s style of campy!
I do like KM, but I think this could be a good chance to press the reset button on the show. Have Hope and Liam leave (good riddance to the latter), Wyatt and Quinn can stay because they’re still fun to watch, and then bring back Bridget. She’s a heroine, but not as saintly as Hope, so it would be a change of pace, and she still has lots of potential IMO. I love Ashley Jones, but there are other actresses in that age group who could pull it off too. The other option would be (and I realize I’m suggesting this for the 5,000th time!) to bring back Felicia and have her battle the Logan sisters, but that all focuses on an older age group than SORAS’d Hope and Bridget.

Yes, it goes without saying that I think bringing Felicia back would be a great option for the show!
And yes, DAYS did switch out Jack recasts with a shower scene. Mark Valley went in, but once things got steamy, it was Steve Wilder. That would be so wild if they recast Hope, or anyone, during a sex scene!
