With one more month to go who do we honestly believe is a Lead Actor and Lead Actress from each show? there are many borderline candidates this year. For me the amount of appearances, whether it’s their story that they lead on, and just a general feeling that someone feels right in “Lead”. Those who rejoined their shows late in the year I believe should be in the supporting category as well as guest/limited performers. So here is my take on who is a lead from each show:
The Bold and the Beautiful: Courtney Hunt (Sally), Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (Steffy), Rena Sofer (Quinn) and Heather Tom (Katie)
Days Of Our Lives: Kristian Alfonso (Hope), Mary Beth Evans (Kayla), Deidre Hall (Marlena and Hattie), Marci Miller (Abigail), and Arianne Zucker (Nicole)
General Hospital: Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis), Kelly Monaco (Sam), Maura West (Ava), and Laura Wright (Carly)
The Young and the Restless: Sharon Case (Sharon), Eileen Davidson (Ashley), Amelia Heinle (Victoria), Christel Khalil (Lily) and Gina Tognoni (Phyllis)
The Bold and the Beautiful: Scott Clifton (Liam), Don Diamont (Bill), Thorsten Kaye (Ridge), and John McCook (Eric)
Days Of Our Lives: Billy Flynn (Chad), Galen Gering (Rafe), Eric Martsolf (Brady), Stephen Nichols (Steve), and Freddie Smith (Sonny)
General Hospital: Maurice Benard (Sonny), Roger Howarth (Franco), Billy J Miller (“Jason”/Andrew), and James Patrick Stuart (Valentin)
The Young and the Restless: Peter Bergman (Jack), Eric Braeden (Victor), Daniel Goddard (Cane), Joshua Morrow (Nick), and Jason Thompson (Billy)
Do any of these feel like they are in the wrong category? Are there actors who you believe belong in lead who I have not mentioned?

I have a feeling that Kristoff St John is going to get a sympathy Emmy for everything that has been going on in his personal life this year.December 4, 2017 at 9:49 am #1202429156
Your list mostly looks right to me, Freeman. It’s hard to go out of my way to disagree with you on shows I’ve barely seen, though including Daniel Goddard and Christel Khalil for Y&R does surprise me. I know they had some significant amount of story, but I don’t think of them as leads.
If we’re talking about who we think should be in each category, then for DAYS, I would consider swapping out Mary Beth Evans for Marci Miller. Or maybe just include both, though as you guys may know I like to try to keep the number of people I consider leads around four. For the guys, I think Billy Flynn and Eric Martsolf are leads for sure, though I’d say Greg Vaughan is supporting (I don’t see him anywhere near as much as I want to), and the other three are borderline. I’d be fine with any of them submitting in either category. Even though I’d lean more for supporting on him, I could see James Reynolds submitting in lead for this year, especially after Theo’s shooting, and story where’s he’s been the main on-screen character.
Also, has Katie had much story this year on B&B? She seemed to basically be a consistent supporting player in all the Quinn-related drama in the first half of the year or so, and while Quinn, Eric, Ridge, Bill and Brooke all seemed like they were leading the storyline in various ways, she seemed there to poke and prod them one way or the other. For the half or so of the year I did watch, I’d put Katherine Kelly Lang as a lead over Heather Tom.December 4, 2017 at 2:04 pm #1202429377
EmmyLoser, Daniel Goddard and Christel Khalil had a tremendous amount of screen time and significant story of their own in 2017 and were both extremely effective. Goddard is in my top five, which I never ever thought would happen!
I see what you mean about Marci Miller, she has had a great deal of screen time, I will add her. But I do think Mary Beth Evans had enormous amount of story at the beginning and again in the middle of the year. I also believe that she would submit in Lead but I know that isn’t the point of this!
lol, Greg Vaughan: I think I put him in Lead mostly because Supporting is so darned crowded! His triangle with Brady and Nicole was extremely powerful but I do see your logic in saying he belongs in Supporting. I know that Freddie Smith intends to submit in Lead (he has said that he is submitting his heartfelt conversation with Paul about still loving Will for his Emmy reel).
Katie hasn’t had much screen time but then hardly anybody has on B&B! This show is so weird in how much vacation time most of the actors and actresses get during the course of a calendar year! I don’t mind demoting her to Supporting but I certainly don’t feel that Katherine Kelly Lang has had anything significant to justify Lead; she has been on even less than Katie this year.
Interesting thoughts! (:December 4, 2017 at 4:46 pm #1202429473
Looks good, Freeman. Thanks! A few comments…
I agree that Marci Miller should appear in Lead this year. Greg Vaughan is definitely Supporting. I tend to think Freddie Smith is as well, although he is borderline. James Carver is definitely supporting.
I’m ok with Heather Tom and Katherine Kelly Lang in either Lead or Supporting. Their characters were at times front-burner and they certainly aired enough to be considered Leads, although there were also times when that was not the case.
Although Kristoff St. John and Melody Thomas Scott are typically considered Leads on Y&R, they were probably more Supporting when looking at the year as a whole. Daniel Goddard was definitely a Lead this year. I would say Christel Khalil is a Lead, though her placement is not as clear-cut as Goddard’s.
Looking at the Lead Actors for GH reminds me of why I do not care much for the show. All four of the Leads play incorrigible criminals (although perhaps that will no longer be true of Miller now that he is Drew not Jason).December 4, 2017 at 5:26 pm #1202429509
Thanks everybody, I made a few changes on my lists based on what y’all said.
Gosh, Supporting Actor is SO crowded! Just from Days: John Aniston, Bryan Datillo, Chandler Massey, James Reynolds, Christopher Sean, Greg Vaughan and Robert Scott Wilson! (I would take out Reynolds and Aniston and that would be my top five, albeit I really loved Greg Rikaart’s work on Y&R when he thought Chloe was dead).
I struggled with Judi Evans: I want her to win Best Supporting Actress but the truth is she had a tremendous amount of screen time and a case could be made for her to be in Lead – she also played two characters (brilliantly). By placing her in Supporting and Deidre in Lead I can root for my two favorite actresses of 2017! (;December 5, 2017 at 10:06 am #1202430064
Sounds good to me. Category placements are always pretty tough, especially in years when there is a writing change. It makes the year seem longer, and characters move in and out of prominence sometimes pretty suddenly. Looking back through some of the citations last week, I remembered that, oh yeah, Adrienne on DAYS spent the first part of the year going through cancer treatment, and Hope was in jail and then on the run. Half the cast went to Europe looking for Stefano. Those seem like ages ago now, but it’s been less than 12 months.
