Look, all of us derbyites are massive soap fans and know this genre better than anybody, with that said, let’s have a little fun and play a game of casting director.
Here’s the task, you have to create your DREAM soap opera, money is no option and you can cast anybody to play the following roles, who do you cast? The only limitation: they have to be a living actor.
Here are some examples to start off with, but feel free to expand on this list…
Add as much or as little detail as you’d like.
The Prodigal Son
The Outcast Son
The Town Psycho
The Town Tramp
The Savvy Businessman
The Savvy Businesswoman
The Anti-HeroJune 27, 2012 at 12:50 am #423012
Here are my picks:
The Matriarch: Julia Rose Barr as Katherine McAdams-Holland-Courtland
–A fair-tempered, beloved former Mayor Katherine is married to state senator Colin Courtland (her third marriage; his second) who is about to see her good name questioned with allegations of corruption during her tenure of Mayor (which just ended a year ago, after she resigned so her husband could persue a Governor’s run). Also, numerous secrets from her current and former husbands are about to exposed.
The Patriarch: Jed Allan as Colin Courtland
—a career politican who occupies the longest standing seat in his state senate; he has ruled with fear, intimidation and cunning. For 25 years he has been re-elected without anybody running against him. the tables are turning now as an up and comer with impeccable qualifications, a well-liked personality and loads of friends has decided to run against him; and now has a lot of supporters throwing their weight around and sharing years of secrets with which to blackmail the Patriarch.
The Ingeune: Melissa Archer as Shanelle McAdams
—She is the daughter of our fair Matriarch; a product of a rape when matriarch was just 15. She grew up longing for a stable life as her mother married and divorced twice by the time Shanelle was 16. When mother married Colin, her life stablized and she found a mentor as she was taken in by Colin who viewed her as the daugher her never had. She now works on her step-fathers staff and is studying journalism and political science at the local university. Though a good girl she is often tempted with turning to the dark side, especially when the long-held secret about her biological father’s identity if revealed and she has to make a choice: Confront him despite the danger it would bring or let it go and move on.
The Vixen: Tamara Braun as Marcella “Marcie” Perez
—Posing as the best friend to the Ingeune and engaged to Dexter, she is sleeping with the Colin and is working as a hostess at the hotel/resturaunt owned by Katherine. Marcie comes from a broken home with deadbeat parents and has never known love. Though she does half-heartdly care for Dexter and longs for the money & power a marriage to him will bring, she ultimately has her sights set much higher. She wants to become the new Mrs. Patriarch.
The Prodigal Son: Tom Degnan as Dexter Courtland
—An honest, hard-working family man. He loves his mother with all his heart, idolizes his father; though oftentimes wishes dad would make better decisions and took his step-sister under his wing. He belives his new fiancee is the ONE he’ll spend his life with. However, when pushed to the edge he is surprised by the choices he’ll make.
The Mobster: Vincent Irrizarry M.J. Gore
—A formerly feared mobster who has been reduced to petty crimes, robbery and pimping he longs to regain the power and strength his organization had in it’s hey-day in the 1980’s when he was the drug king of his town. Dying for a legit shot at power again he decides to do something drastic, and make himself known.
The Outcast Son: Jacob Young as Rylan Courtland
—-The product of his father’s first marriage; he was only 12 when his mother died and his father re-married and he never really took to his step-mother, Katherine and resented the attention that his step-brother Dexter got. After flunking out of local university after a sports injury rendered him unable to complete his scholarship he has floundered with menial job after menial job. However, redemption is around the corner as a powerful new ally will give him confidence and strength, or so he thinks.
The Villain: Ron Raines as Wesley Holland
–A feared CEO and ruthless leader; he used to be best friends with Colin and was briefly married to the Katherine, but a nasty divorce and later the marriage of Colin and Katherine turned him against both of them. Now they are bitter rivals and he will use every nasty trick to take down those he can’t stand, or who stand in his way. He is the driving force behind a attempt to get his rival thrown off the senate.
The Villain’s Protege: Sean Kanan as Kyle Matheson
—The newest thing in town. He is being mentored by Wesley to take over the senate seat of Colin. However, he has an agenda all his own. He is madly head over heels in love with the Marcella, who wants nothing to do with him; as she is desperate to forget her past growing up in the same trailer parker that Kyle grew up in.
The Villaniess : Mary Beth Evans as Ramona Holland
–She is full of rage, hatred and envy; all directed right at Katherine; a school mate who she has both envied and hated for over 30 years. Former friends turned enemies she’ll do anything she can to take down her rival. Even if that means exposing a past secret that will even get herself in trouble. She is married to Wesley Holland, who she has divorced twice now. Wesley was her second and fourth marriages. Her first was when she was 18 and ended after sixth months (it was annulled); her third marriage ended when her husband was shot in an unexpected car-jacking. She has never recovered from this tragedy and this changed her. She blames her mortal enemy Katherine because her husband was on his way to see Katherine, who was his boss when he was car-jacked. She has a close relationship with her only son, Ryan, although she hasn’t seen him since he left town fourteen years ago to escape his step-father.
The Town Psycho: Robin Strasser as Lucinda Becksworth
—Feared by all; hated by all she used to be a respected member of town, but a few poor choices and she is left with rage and few friends. She longs to be accepted again and to clear up the troubling rumors that have destroyed her reputation.
The Town Tramp: Jamie Luner as Amber-Lynn Baxter
—She is a townie pure and simple with few aspirations other than to bed as many men as she can and collect as much power as she can. She hasn’t had it easy and has been rejected more times than not. She finds herself in a unexpected place of power when she witnesses a crime in progess and must decide what to do with the information.
The Savvy Businessman: Jon Lindstrom as Nathan Holland
—To the public he is a kind and responsible business owner; but in private he is a terror with a mean streak and problems with the bottle. He is the brother of the Villian and is hell-bent of destroying his brother.
The Savvy Businesswoman: Marcy Walker as Gabriella Matthewson
—–A near saint in town, she has had a tough few years; her husband and son were killed in a car accident, she nearly lost all her money in the stock-market crash and she’s been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She’s going to have to muster up all her strength to get through that and deal with the hell that is headed her way when her teenage nephew comes into town with a secret, PTSD from a recent tragedy and a terrible attitude.
The Anti-Hero: Sarah Brown as Cameron Westmore
—-She makes bad choices for no reason and has a knack for making enemies with the wrong people.
The Troubled Teen: Lexie Ainsworth as Haylee Everett
—Recently ran away from home with her boyfriend after getting pregnant by her abusive ex and now seeking shelter and support from her new boyfriend, and his aunt, Gabriella.
The Teen Heartthrob: Nic Robuck as Taylor Matthewson
–He and his new girlfriend, Haylee recently showed up on his Aunt Gabriella’s doorstep, after she escaped her abusive ex, who has impregnated her and they went 3,000 miles to escape him and seek his Aunt’s help.
The Wise-Cracking Detective: Ricky Paull Goldin as Vincent “Viper” Roberston
–For a small town detective he is sure busy with numerous murders, corruption scandals and robberies to solve. his laid back demanor and laugh a minuet personality makes him well-liked.
The Detective’s Shady Partner: Real Andrews as Jake Donnelly
—-On the surface a good cop, but in reality a shady, underhanded, double dealing scum who will sell out anybody.
The Ethically Challenged Politican: Tonja Walker-Davidson as Jacinda Oakes
—One of the Patriarch’s many disgarded mistresses she is power-hungry and hell bent on revenge as she believes she was unfairly dismissed by who she views as the love of her life. She has a few secrets she can use to expose him and make a name for herself.
The Ethically Outraged Lawyer: Renee Jones as Francesca “Frankie” Roberts
—She is the most morally centered person in town and is constantly disgusted at the moraless acts commited in town.
The Drifters with secret past: Robin Mattson, Tuc Watkins & Scott Clifton as:
—Carter Thomas III

The Town Society Snobs: Constance Towers, Kimberline Brown, Jane Elliot and Hillary B. Smith
—Constance Towers as Amelia Westmore
—Kimberline Brown as Jackie Bright
—Jane Elliot as Patricia Holland
—–Hillary B. Smith as Nadine Hamilton
–Every soap needs a few good snobs and these four ladies have that in spades; these recurring characters will be seen at the town country club and at various spots around the town judging everybody, giving their moral outrage and being total hypocrites as a way to illustrate the points needed in various storylines.
The Token Lesbians:
-Nancy Lee Grahn as Justina Whitmore
—Lesli Kay as Diana Gore
—Kristina Wagner as Ashley St. Stevens
Justine and her partner Whitney have been together for about three years; and were married about a year ago in one of the state’s first legal gay marriage ceremonies. It was major news in their hometown, where they both come from polar opposite backgrounds. Diana from the wrong side of tracks, the sister to a low-life ex-mobster turned petty criminal who raised her but disowned her when she came out of the closet. Justina, a careerwoman was raised by a wealthy family who turned their backs when she became public with her lesbianism. Their relationship under great scrutiny is now starting to strain. Wandering eyes and public perception are about to give way.
Ashley St. Stevens is a humble school teacher, who has happily lived a solitary life content with her novels (that she writes, but nobody ever reads), she is very shy and only comes alive in the classroom. She had one realtionship in junior high but nothing serious. A part of her has always felt locked away and when she accidently meets lesbian couple next door Justina and Diana, all hell breaks loose when she begins to have strange feelings for Diana.
The Token Gay Guys:
—-Trent Dawson as Brad Mitchell
—Billy Miller as Nathan Baxter
—Stephen Martines as Tyler Reyes
Brad and Nathan are a formerly happy gay couple whose relationship is on it’s last legs. They met eight years ago in New York when Brad was on-assignment for his job as an undercover reporter for a now out of print newspaper. Nathan was an intern at the newspaper and fell madly in love with Brad. After spending five years together in New York, Brad’s assignment ended and he returned to his homewtown, where Brad has yet to come out. Somehow, Nathan was convinced to quit his job and move home with Brad, where they will live together as “roommates” and live in the clost. For a period of time Nathan adjusted to life in the closet, but now he longs for more and pretty soon something is going to give. Meanwhile, Both Brad and Nathan start to have wandering eyes and set their sights on Tyler Reyes, a 36 year old bi-sexual, local handyman who gets more than he bargained for when he accepts a job building an outside patio for the couple. This triangle really heats up in an unexpected way as Tyler plays both guys in a twisted mind game.
The Reyes Family:
–EJ Bonillia as Nico Reyes
—Florencia Lozano as Ivette Reyes
Nico Reyes is 22 years old and on the outside is a happy, well-adjusted college student. He is the starting pitcher on the University baseball team and manages to keep decent grades. Sadly, the tragic double-murder of his parents when he was 16 sent him over the edge and he has never recovered from that. Instead of turning to drugs, drinking or gangs like others would have; he developed the habit of setting fires, and this secret life is about to come into the forefront in a big way.
Ivette Reyes is 40 years old and is the older sisters of Tyler and Nico Reyes. After the death of her parents she took on the job of raising Nico, with little help from Tyler who unable to cope set off on his own bizzare path. Ivette owns a small latin-themed nightclub in the seedy part of town (formerly owned by her parents), and tries to be there for her siblings and live a clean life. However, the debt of trying to pay for Nico’s college is taking it’s toll, and she may turn to unfortunate means to keep up. All the while she has to deal with the horror that is about to come her way thanks to both her brothers.
Jeff Branson as Ryan Holland
–Ryan is the do-gooder son of Romona Holland, from her first marriage. He left town when he turned 18 to escape the emotional abuse and neglect he received from his step-father Wesley; who never accepted Ryan as his son. He returns to town with a mission, and it’s one that will prove difficult for anybody to ignore.June 27, 2012 at 6:43 am #423013
Fun idea! I’m going to have to think about this a bit.June 27, 2012 at 3:23 pm #423014
Here’s what I came up with during the day at work. To try to make things a little less dated, I decided to work with a
slightly less traditional family model where our matriarch and patriarch had
already had families when they met and started a new one of their own together. I also decided to avoid actors who are
currently on a soap, just to keep it more interesting:
The Matriarch: Kathryn Hayes
The Patriarch: Garrett Morris
The Dutiful Daughter: Daphnee Duplaix
The Ingenue: Erin Torpey
The Black Sheep: Rhassan Orange
The Vixen: Rebecca Budig
The Prodigal Son: Agim Kaba
The Career Criminals: Rick Hearst and Cynthia Preston
The Detective: Robert Kelker-Kelly
The Legal Eagle: Lindsay Hartley
The Outcast Son: Darren Brooks
The Villain: William DeVry
The Villainess: Christie Clark
The Town Psycho: Leann Hunley
The Town Tramp: Martha Madison
The Savvy Businessman: Jon Bolger
The Savvy Businesswoman: Andrea Evans
The Anti-Hero: Mark Hapka
The Bad Girl: Deanna Wright
The Laidback Dreamer: David Lago
The Rich Bitch: Robin Strasser
The Gold Digger: William Levy
The Troubled Teen: Kelly Missal
The Teen Heartthrob: Eddie AldersonJune 28, 2012 at 11:50 am #423016
I love everybody’s ideas…Keep them coming!June 28, 2012 at 9:40 pm #423017
If I’m not specifically limited to soap actors, I’m gonna have a ball with this. All roles are subject to last-minute recasting or abrupt aging/de-aging.
The Matriarch – Helen Mirren
Cutthroat corporate giant, like a female Victor Newman except she speaks above a whisper.
The Patriarch – Bill Nighy
COO of Mirren’s company, and though she’s clearly the one in control, he’s an enforcer of sorts. When she barks, he bites.
The Ingeune – Alison Brie
Newly hired as Patriarch’s assisstant. Matriarch doesn’t like her, because maybe Patriarch likes her too much.
The Vixen – Crystal Chappell
Matriarch’s protege, hired as much for her feminine wiles as her business skill. Helpful at getting in the pants — and accounts — of rival companies.
The Prodigal Son – James Marsden
Former golden boy, star college athelete, life and career derailed by alcoholism and prescription drug abuse, struggling to work his way back into his parents’ good graces.
The Mobster – Rutina Wesley
If we must have a mobster character, let’s at least cut out the patriarchal BS. Let’s make her a woman, let’s have her be black, and let’s have her played by a woman who, if she demanded a kickback, you’d be scared to say no.
The Outcast Son – Matt Bomer
Iraq War vet, recently came out as gay following repeal of DADT, parents totally cool with that, but not totally cool with his decision to pursue journalism rather than enter the family business, because he could be in a position to report on the company’s unlawful practices.
The Villian – David Tennant
CEO of a rival company. Willing to do whatever it takes to win. May or may not commute to work in a TARDIS.
The Villianess – Erika Slezak
Patriarch’s first wife. Will do anything to destory Patriarch’s family.
The Town Psycho – Michelle Forbes
Once-respected psychiatrist, used to treat Prodigal Son. Her marriage went south and made her go kinda crazy. She’s occasionally prone to kidnapping people on the instructions of the voices in her head.
The Town Tramp – Emily VanCamp
Classic bad girl. Recently earned her MBA, prefers to sleep her way to the top. At first attempts to get into the company by seducing Outcast Son, which won’t work for two reasons (see above). They develop a grudging friendship, though he doesn’t approve of her, um, business tactics.
The Savvy Businessman – Grant Aleksander
Long-time employee in Matriarch’s company. Dutiful, loyal, tries to keep his head down and plays good cop when he can, but knows how to survive in a cutthroat business.
The Savvy Businesswoman – Renee Elise Goldsberry
A mid-level accounts executive. Notice the books slightly cooked. Unsure what to do, she brings the information to Outcast Son.
The Anti-Hero – Alexander Skarsgard
Bad boy, estranged frat brother of Prodigal Son, they parted ways because Prodigal got clean and sober but Anti-Hero never stopped the boozing or pill-popping. He rides a motocycle, is frequently shirtless, has sex with many, many women (and a couple of men when he’s had enough tequila). He’s s bad influence to be sure, but not a bad guy. He’s a lovable rogue.June 30, 2012 at 11:22 pm #423018
Crap yes. Erika Slezak as a VILLIANESS! I’d LOVE to see her play against type and yes, on Rutina Wesley!July 1, 2012 at 9:58 am #423019

That’s what I was thinking about Slezak, though technically I don’t think she has an “against type.” She played so many alters on OLTL that she covered pretty much every possible type, LOL.
What I thought would be interesting would be for her to play a villainess who is sane.July 2, 2012 at 12:20 am #423020

Yeah, you have a point. I just think it would rock to see her as somebody not so concerned about doing the right thing. The anti-Viki if you will. It would be even more awesome to have Robin Strasser play a heroine with a moral compass.July 2, 2012 at 9:37 pm #423021
