Multiple outlets are reporting that Michael Strahan will exit “Live with Kelly and Michael” at the end of his current contract. He will not return next season. Sources say the reason for this decision is that he will join “GMA” on a full-time basis.
Undoubtedly he will be replaced with a new co-anchor, who are your top choices and what do you think of this change?
I’d love to see Anderson Cooper for this job. Or maybe Kelly could pick a female co-host like her former “AMC” co-star Susan Lucci.April 19, 2016 at 8:51 pm #1201818966
^^ I will be sad to see him go. He had such a natural confidence and presence. I never would have thought of having another female co-host for this show, but I think it’s an interesting idea. I don’t mind Anderson Cooper, but his quirks are very similar to Kelly’s so I’d rather someone who could complement her a bit better. Maybe Mario Lopez? I’ll have to mull this one over a bit.April 20, 2016 at 10:08 am #1201819104
Yeah, I liked him on Live, but I can see why GMA would have more appeal for him, offering a little more flexibility if he’s doing football commentary in the fall and allowing for integration of that rather than more competing with it and the show not actually needing him to be there because there are five other main personalities going.
I’ve read some speculation that ABC is planning to expand GMA into a third hour at 9 AM, which I wouldn’t have expected. If they want Strahan to sort of anchor a 9 AM GMA hour, it is a really huge slap in the face to Kelly. I was also reading that she wasn’t made aware of Strahan leaving until the basically the same time the news broke in the media, that she was outraged, and that that’s why she didn’t do the show this morning. It’s a shame to see the situation becoming so messy.
And I did see a few people suggest it was time for a female co-host, which I’m not sure I really see as the best route, as I wouldn’t want to even almost make people associate this show with the trainwreck that is The View or the other trainwreck that is the Kathie Lee/Hoda hour of the Today Show. I hadn’t thought of him, but I think Mario Lopez is a really good suggestion actually.April 20, 2016 at 4:22 pm #1201819222
I would prefer almost anybody other than Mario Lopez. My top choices right now are Jerry O’Connell, Cameron Mathison (who Kelly knows from AMC), Nick Lachey or Jeff Probst (Though I suppose Survivor could be problematic in terms of scheduling).April 21, 2016 at 5:21 am #1201819331
Is NPH under exclusive contract to NBC still? He’d be an excellent host since he’s NYC based.April 26, 2016 at 12:14 pm #1201821773
No sooner was the breath out of Ripa’s mouth that she was so-o-o-o happy for Michael did the press release hit of his early ouster from Live with Kelly and Michael on May 13th.
Will GMA expand to a three hour set with Strahan hosting the final third? Live is the second highest rated show in daytime TV. Will ABC gamble by throwing a moneymaker under the bus to gain a larger revenue?
Stay tuned.April 26, 2016 at 12:49 pm #1201821781
My opinion is that Live will stay on the air in some form and that GMA will expand with Live moving to another timeslot. I would much rather see ABC cancel The View instead of Live. We all know that The View has been running on fumes for a long time now.April 26, 2016 at 4:26 pm #1201821841
Would ABC possibly try to insert a third hour of GMA in a non-continuous format, i.e., in The View’s current timeslot? That show is a mess, and at that time GMA wouldn’t be competing with any form of the Today Show. I know Good Afternoon America was an unmitigated disaster, but throwing in something that’s still in the AM under the GMA umbrella that skews a little more toward The View’s format could be worth considering if the alternative is further messing with Live, which is working well as is.April 28, 2016 at 3:15 am #1201822278
I saw Ricky Gervais was appearing this week on Live with Kelly and Michael and thought it would be entertaining to see him respond to the high drama.
He didn’t. Rather he relayed an anecdote about seeing Ripa walking in Central Park.
I can’t believe I wasted 43 minutes of my life (that’s an hour show when fast forwarding through ads). Do people actually watch this cloying pretense every day? It only serves to promote products under the guise of a glimpse of the celebrity away from the facade.
