Buried in the news of the gender neutral performance category is the fact that the Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program category was eliminated, so the Hadestown cast won’t be able to join those of The Band’s Visit, Dear Evan Hansen, and The Color Purple, all of which got cast members an Oscar away from an EGOT:

It’s kind of a cheap award and doesn’t do what it was intended (up star power) since no one shows up to accept…

Hmmm. Because I’m a soaps person, this category was very much an afterthought for me. But given how many live musical performances are done on the morning shows, it didn’t seem like a bad idea.

I hadn’t seen most of these changes actually. The inclusion of the digital series with the broadcast series in some of the technical categories seems like a good idea. The separating of makeup, hair-styling and costuming to distinguish everyday occasions from events is, I guess, similar to primetime but also seems unnecessary.

This was an awful category to begin with. Good riddance.

There’s a lot of musical performances in primetime too but they don’t have a separate award. This was done to be all star-fuckery and I’m glad it’s gone.

This always seemed like a cheap way to EGOT some artists (however it basically only helped Cynthia Erivo) in exchange of attending the show, which they never did.
So there’s no need to it as there isn’t a equivalent category on the Primetime ceremony that has much more elaborate musical performances to reward

I really liked how the institution of this category provided an incentive for music artists to bring their A game to morning programs, but what irritated me was that the award soon became less about rewarding the performer per say than about the particular morning program (and thereby, network) airing that performance. What’s more, anytime a Broadway musical performance was in contention (see The Band’s Visit, The Color Purple or Dear Evan Hansen), it was the automatic winner by default, which rendered this category as too predictable.

This category is cheap. Glad it’s gone.
