Do people actually feel James Lastovic is a good actor? I feel like he’s one of the worst I’ve ever seen, which is saying something for soaps. They should really get rid of the Younger categories. The really great winners of in the past 15 or so years (Jennifer Finnigan, Jennifer Landon, et al) could have competed with the other actors and done fine. But they are really scraping the bottom of the barrel now, especially with only four broadcast network soaps represented.

I wish they had a Younger Actor and Younger Actress category from the beginning. Kate Mulgrew (Mary, Ryan’s Hope) would have certainly won an Emmy or two if there had been a Younger Actress category back then. I am glad they have the category!

Yes, i think James Lastovic is a good actor and wish him well in the future. I truly hope they reward Casey Moss but they haven’t liked him in the past so we will have to wait and see…

See, when Kate Mulgrew was on Ryan’s Hope, 15 soaps aired, so that’s a bit more understandable (even though I still believe she should have competed with the big girls). But we’re down to four soaps now, and some of the Younger pre-nominated performers barely had scenes while many, many frontburner lead and supporting actors were left off the list.

When the Daytime Academy first instituted the categories, soaps were chasing youth in the ‘80s post-Luke and Laura, so young stars pushed to the forefront with flashy, sexy storylines that often eclipsed the more veteran stars. But today, with soaps barely clinging to life, they aren’t featuring the 25-and-under set as much anymore because that audience barely watches TV at all in the 2010s. A Younger nomination now seems like a participation trophy instead of a major honor. Like “Hey, young dude. You were on a soap. You get a nomination! And you get a nomination!” Better to streamline the awards and let the better younger performers prove their worth among the older folks. No other big award does this.

I understand why people who love award prognostication wouldn’t want to have fewer categories, but JMHO. It just makes an already diminished award that much more diminished.

I think the younger categories are important to have largely because it encourages younger participants and can help to keep the more talented ones interested in their shows potentially. While it’s true that now literally any younger performer who submits their name will get onto the prenom list, that just means that the younger categories, like most of the other non-acting categories, have few enough participants that they don’t require an extra round of voting just to whittle them down to a manageable number for people to judge. If the list of younger nominees contains duds, with very rare exception, it’s not because there weren’t talented eligible performers who did good work, but for the same reason we sometimes get underwhelming nominees and winners in every category. Take, for example, a few years ago in 2015. If you watch younger actress winner Hunger King’s reel, it’s easy to see one drawing the conclusion that the reel is underwhelming, and the actress in fine but nothing that deserves an award, so the rest of the field was probably even less deserving. But King’s reel was probably the least compelling and magnetic of the bunch, lacking the natural charm of someone like Haley Pullos (who was nominated but lost) or the emotional depth of someone like Camila Banus (who was also nominated and lost). It was my opinion that Banus had the third best reel of anyone that year, after Maura West and Alison Sweeney, but it’s hard to imagine she would have gotten a deserved nomination in supporting actress.

If there were a better system for determining nominations and winners, I might be more inclined to agree that younger actors who are really strong should just compete in lead or supporting categories. But the system certainly favors older, more veteran performers, so the younger performers wouldn’t even have as fair a shake as some of the older actors do, and again, the system isn’t particularly great at sorting out the best performers over the course of a year.

I do understand your point about not further diminishing an already diminished award. But I’d rather give them more chances to reward the right people, since they have such a hard time doing that.

And to answer about James Lastovic, I’d say opinions vary pretty widely. I think the guy has had a few good moments, but overall I wouldn’t say he’s been a strong performer. But that’s another example of how flawed the system is. Casey Moss has never been nominated, but he’s been doing great work on DAYS for years.

I would have voted for Haley Pullos but would have been almost as happy for Camila Banus to win in that particular year. I agree about Hunter King (btw, where did she disappear to? Summer has been gone forever!).

On my dream ballot I included all the people I could be happy for if they were to win, I wouldn’t be too disappointed if they got the Emmy this year. That is why I only put down 4 in Younger Actor; my 5th place slot would go to Garren Stitt for GH but I just don’t think he would deserve to be there. Now of course I think anyone but Casey Moss would be a travesty but they haven’t like Casey in the past so who knows?

I couldn’t decide between Jacqueline MacInnes Wood and Mishael Morgan for 5th place for Supporting Actress so I put both names on my list!

We have more than a month of suspense to find out what the panels decided; it’s usually a mix of terrific nominees with less than terrific ones. I am hoping my percentage of favorites is higher than this year than in previous ones!

I still have my fingers crossed for Casey Moss. I’m still not over Camila Banus not getting a prenom at all. She should have been prenommed for her episode where she was trying to talk JJ out of committing suicide, ripping open all of those letters, she couldn’t have pulled off a better performance, I personally would have offered the emmy for just that scene, she was wonderful. I love my Eileen Davidson, and my Susan Banks, but part of me is hoping that Arianne Zuker walks away with the supporting actress emmy this year, she has been nominated and lost, and also snubbed with no nomination way too many times over the years….she deserves an emmy, and the emmys have been knwon to be famous for handing out emmy’s to stars who are not currently on the show anymore, alot being from Days of our Lives…I hope that trend continues this year for Arianne Zuker!!!!

I really hope Eileen Davidson wins another Emmy for Days. I love her so much. Every time she is on screen she steals every scene, especially this past year when she brought back Susan.

^I would be happy for Eileen Davidson but I honestly think that Marla Adams is going to win the Emmy and deservedly so. I could also make a strong case for Arianne Zucker and Camryn Grimes. I am hoping all four are nominated!

I know Eileen Davidson’s DAYS stint wasn’t that long, and at first I was pretty disappointed that she was pretty much only playing Susan, but man, she was just so incredibly good. The breakdown scenes where Roger forces Susan to face what she did are just stellar. Iconic. It would make me so happy to see her win an Emmy for it.

Nominations are due out next week! Then we can start to find out what people submitted and the speculation can begin in earnest!

With the nominations a few days away, I am hoping certain actors – who are good actors but – they simply don’t deserve nominations for their work in 2017 imo:

Best Actor: Billy Miller, Galen Gering, Stephen Nichols, and to a lesser extent 3-time Emmy winners Peter Bergamn and Scott clifton (I think the last two will def. be nominated)

Best Actress: Kelly Monaco and Gina Tognoni – they simply did not do the great work that Judi Evans, Nancy Lee Grahn, Maura West, Sharon Case and Eileen Davidson did. To a lesser extent, I would prefer not to see Laura Wright, Mary Beth Evans, Marci Miller or Melissa Clare Egan nominated for their work in 2017.

Best Supporting Actor: Steve Burton, Wally Kurth, Anthony Montgomery (yes, he has his one great emmy reel scene, but that is all he has), and to a lesser extent James Patrick Staurt and Bryton James.

Best Supporting Actress: Nadia Bjorlin, Susan Hayes, Lisa LoCicero and Elizabeth Hendrickson. All good actresses, yes, but the work of the other pre-nominees was phenomenal and deserving of nominations.

Best Younger Actor: Anthony Turpel, Tequan Richmond (was he even on the show in 2017? Blink and you mised him!), Hudson West, Noah Alexander Gerry and Tristan Lake Leabu – if Casey Moss isn’t nominated I will cry! He so deserves the Emmy for 2017.

Best Younger Actress: Paige Searcy and Lexie Stevenson didn’t do anything that I felt was Emmy-worthy.

So I know others won’t agree with me, but those are the ones who I would be disappointed to see on the list.

The ones who for me MUST BE nominated are Judi Evans, Marla Adams, Casey Moss, Chandler Massey and Greg Vaughan – I will be really disappointed if those five somehow don’t get nominated.

IDK if The Talk is going to be announcing the nominations this year? I think it’s this coming Wednesday. Keeping my fingers crossed for my favorites!

I don’t care who puts out the nominees, as long as they put a freaking muzzle on that annoying freak cheryl underwood!!!
