It seems that the Television Academy (which administers the Primetime Emmys) and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS, which administers the Daytime Emmys along with the newly splintered Children’s & Family Emmys and the Emmys for news and documentaries, sports, etc.) have gotten together to realign some of the Emmy categories. According to the article on the Emmy website, “Moving forward, the competitions will be organized solely by content genre as opposed to the current method, which separates programs based on program airtime.”

In terms of what this means for the upcoming Daytime Emmys, it is specified that:

    – Programming that was previously considered under the Limited Drama category will now be awarded under the Primetime banner.

    – The Morning Show and Spanish-Language Morning Show categories will be eliminated, with those shows competing either under the News & Documentary Emmys banner or in the talk show categories at the Daytime Emmys.

    – Scripted drama and comedies series will compete at the Primetime Emmys with the exception of programming intended for those age 15 and under (which will compete at the Children’s & Family Emmys) and the Daytime Drama categories, which will stay with the Daytime Emmys and be redefined to include “any multi-camera, weekday daily serial, spin-off or reboot.”

Further clarification will be offered when the Call for Entries is released, which is scheduled to happed in January, but a Deadline article about the changes did specify that the rule adjustment means Days of our Lives: Beyond Salem, as a spin-off of DAYS, would be eligible as a fifth potential nominee for Drama Series, which presents some interesting questions and possibilities.

Overall, this feels like a huge shift, I imagine at least in part as a response to the most recent Daytime Emmys, where soaps found themselves competing with streaming series Julie and the Phantoms or Dash & Lily in the craft categories. I am very eager to see more specifics when the rules for the awards for this past year are released in January.

I read about this and it is quite confusing. Does that mean that there are other shows besides the four remaining soaps and the short Beyond Salem peacock series that would be eligible? How will it affect the soap categories? Really confused…

Good questions. I can’t think of another show that would fit into the drama series criteria other than those five — there’s no other daily serial and no other spinoff shows — but there could be others. I would guess that most of the soap categories would be the same, but I guess we’ll have to wait until January to know more. It is confusing.
