Frank and Ron announced it today.  She will be joining the cast in a new role.

I love me some Budig so I think this is great, but the GH cast is HUGE.

I had a similar reaction, gdfl. I like Budig and I’m happy for her return to daytime. But I have two concerns. The first is the already-too-big cast size. The second is the role. Who will she play? If they bring her on to play yet another criminal, mobster, or psycho, I will scream. If, on the other hand, she plays a smart, successful doctor, then she will be a most welcome addition.

She has the look of a Bell soap siren, so I’m bum that her return to daytime wasn’t on one of those stories. Can we all agree that “General Hospital” is garbage? I should put this in that thread, but last Thursday I was at the dentist and it was on in the lobby. Such nightmarish and embarrassing television.

I agree that it all depends on what role she will play – a new Doctor would be great!

The problem with the “cast being too big” is that we all know that they would cut my favorites and not touch my least favorites ):

I’ve never been a huge Rebecca Budig fan but I’ll reserve judgment, see where she fits in to the canvas.

I’m SO tired of King Sonny, but there are only 4 soaps left and I love this genre of entertainment, so I guess I will just have to continue hitting the “mute” button often…. ):

I saw this earlier and had the same mixed feelings as gdfl and robbalto.  I LOVE Rebecca Budig, and I’m thrilled that she’ll be somewhere that I can see her on a regular basis.  But yeah, the GH cast size is so out of control.  And also, the two brief descriptions I’ve read of the role are “spitfire” and “killer,” which are meant to be positive descriptors but on this show they scream criminal.  I guess this means I’m stuck with this show for a while, because I at least have to see what this role is about.

She totally does have that Bell-soap look!
If B&B didn’t revolve around such a small group of characters, I would have definitley been advocating for her to join that cast.  Perhaps an edgier Bridget?  Or a new character that was basically a Greenlee knock off.  I feel like she’d make a great rival to Heather Tom’s Katie.  They would have very complementary styles.
Some people suggested Budig as a Phyllis recast before GT took on that role.  I think Buidg looks waaaay to young to be Phyllis.  And while I do love Amelia Heinle, Budig is one of maybe two or three actresses that I think could do justice to the role of Victoria (the other two being Vanessa Marcil, who seems loyal to GH, and Christie Clark, who I would prefer on Days anyway).
But with all that aside, I think she’ll bring something special to GH regardless of how poorly conceived the character is, so since GH got to her first, I think this is good news for all involved.

You may all think I’m crazy… but my first reaction when I saw this casting news:

She is SO a recast of Brenda.

I have this gut feeling they are recasting Brenda.    This is probably a crazy idea I have, but that is my gut.

Although they seem to be indicating she is going to be playing a new character.

That was my reaction!  But I think a Brenda recast is unlikely for a few reasons.  Firstly, Maurice seems to hold a lot of power at GH, and he and Vanessa have always been close so I think he’d be against it.  Secondly, Vanessa Marcil may only be second to Eileen Davidson in terms of fan support.  I think they said her 2002 return brought in 800,000 viewers and her 2010 return brought in 400,000.  I’m sure her next return would follow that decreasing trend, but the numbers are still unlikely to be matched by anyone else.  And finally, Budig may match Brenda’s physicality and charm, but Budig excels as a bad girl.  With Carlivati’s love for big name villains (Maura West as Ava Jerome, Michelle Stafford as Nina Clay, Donna Mills as Madeline Reeves), I imagine Budig will be cast along the same lines.
But with all that said, Cartini do tend to do things that don’t make sense, so for all we know Budig will be nuBrenda and Fluke will be Harlan Barrett.
