I actually like Orpheus as a villain, but there was so little development with all of this. He shows up having been cleared of whatever charges by the ISA and free as a bird, but before you can even say “exoneration party,” he was already kidnapping and attempting to bomb people. I would not have minded seeing him stick around a while and be a menacing presence while not actually doing anything other than making elaborate plans and irritating people. Christian was also growing on me a little, but that’s probably just because this show is starved for younger characters. Kelly Thiebaud’s Zoey was fun and interesting, but it doesn’t seem now like the character will be around too much longer. I was also wishing that Justin had shot, or tried to shoot, Orpheus. The predictability of him hemming and hawing until Steve and Kayla came in was too much.
The treatment of criminals on this show is baffling. I can see them just letting Zoey go. All she really did was hold a gun on Rafe and Hope after being forced into helping Orpheus because he’d kidnapped her son. I don’t know why nothing has happened to Xander, Victor or Sarah. I can rationalize nothing happening to Sarah because even when she took the baby to Paris, she was still the legal parent, so it wasn’t an actual kidnapping. All of her other crimes were committed abroad. I guess they also don’t really have any proof that Victor and Xander switched the babies. Not that they’re trying to find any. I doubt Dr. Raynor would get herself dragged back into this by admitting her part in all of it, and currently no one else can corroborate what happened except via hearsay.
The whole thing with Hope and the bomb was pretty cartoonish — could they not think of something less silly than her putting it in a dumpster? But I liked the building stakes of more people coming over to the apartment as the time wound down, and I loved the scene where John and Hope start looking for a bomb while Marlena is still talking to Eric and Nicole about wedding plans. But this whole latest venture with Orpheus was clearly just A-B storytelling. The whole point was to give Steve and Hope redemption, particularly with John and Marlena, after the Gina/Stevano nonsense, so they both got to be heroes and save John and Marlena. They details barely mattered.
I fully agree, it’s well past time to give Marlena and John a story that’s not about either of them being kidnapped, in a coma, or in immediate danger of being killed. And, I know that Will and Sonny will have some story coming up, but honestly what a waste having the two of them just recapping happenings around town so often and crying over Gabi latest schemes.
Oh and also can we please stop having people have secret meetings at the so-called private park just off the town square? That place sees more foot traffic than Grand Central Station.May 28, 2020 at 9:42 am #1203505259
Emily O’Brien is set to debut on June 5th as Gwen, Jake’s crazy ex-girlfriend. There is no word on how long she will be on the show. She played Jana on The Young and the Restless for 5 years (2006-11) and received 3 Emmy nominations (for 2007, 2008 and 2010) in the Younger Actress category.
I was disappointed in yesterday’s episode, hoping today’s show will be more interesting.May 29, 2020 at 9:24 am #1203507324
I’m excited for Emily O’Brien’s character and for Claire’s return as well. We should get some fun stuff coming up.
Also, I’m loving Kate working as Abe’s director of communications. I also like that it was her idea to give Hope and Steve keys to the city (which is hilarious).June 1, 2020 at 10:19 pm #1203512509
It was really nice to see Will and Marlena scenes the other day. I was a little resentful that Eric and Nicole crashed them, but then the whole sequence with them arguing over who had to tell Sami about Eric and Nicole’s engagement was great. I was laughing out loud. Oh, and I’ve been meaning to mention how great Nicole has looked lately. Wardrobe is giving her great clothes, and the hair department is always doing something interesting and cool for her.
The Eli/Lani scenes today in concert with the Will/Sonny scenes, both having very different conversations about having a baby, were also nicely done.June 2, 2020 at 6:46 pm #1203513647
I particularly love scenes between Suzanne Rogers’s Maggie and Paul Telfer’s Zander. They have a special chemistry, similar to the chemistry that Chandler Massey and Deidre Hall have as well.
I was thinking outside of soap logic during Brady’s scenes – his revenge plan would potentially put lots of people out of work! (;
I hope Sami’s return is longer this time. She only appeared on 4 epiosdes last year, I wanted more!June 2, 2020 at 8:24 pm #1203513714
I keep thinking the same thing about Brady’s revenge, Freeman! His plan, if successful, would surely hurt Victor but would legitimately ruin a lot of people’s lives, people who aren’t born rich and wouldn’t play around with destroying a company because of a temper tantrum. Even bringing it back to soap logic, he’s obviously screwing over Ciara at the very least with his plan, which is going to get most of the canvas angry. I annoys me, but I think it’s good storytelling to let Brady play this kind of villain. It feels very in character, doing something to petulant and thoughtless and self focused. It’s also worth noting that Brady’s sense of entitlement over running Titan is extremely poorly earned. Victor was an inch away from firing him before the time jump for his extremely poor judgment where Kristen is concerned, and honestly that felt justified. If things were based on merit, Sonny would still be running the company. He was ousted for Leo’s sexual harassment suit, which is funny because it does seem believable that would get him fired, even though it was bogus, but Brady is like teflon in terms of every ridiculous and awful thing he’s done.
Anywho, I’m excited to see how far both Brady and Sarah go with these things. Brady’s anger, at least, feels so much more justifiable than Sarah’s. I’m hoping she drops all of this and moves into a different story, though I don’t really see what she’d be doing if she’s not in story with Brady and/or Xander. Maybe she’ll get involved with Phillip when he returns? Kate would love that, I’m sure.June 5, 2020 at 11:23 am #1203517675
So what does everyone think about Emily O’Brien’s Gwen? I wasn’t expecting her to show up at the mental facility with Claire! It has occurred to me that we haven’t been told for certain that she is the same Gwen that Jake is looking for but it does all fit as far as soap logic goes!
I want to see a scene where Ben asks Will to be his best man!
Days is the only show with new episodes. I wonder what next week’s ratings will be for the 4 shows?June 5, 2020 at 8:08 pm #1203518387
As much as I would love to see Days Ratings shoot to the top for once. I am sure that a lot are probably still tuning into the other soaps because people love their classic storylines and episodes. So I doubt their ratings will drop much at all.June 7, 2020 at 9:29 pm #1203520957
It’ll be interesting to see what the ratings are like. I’m a little concerned that the other three soaps being out of new episodes could have the opposite effects, creating a temporary lull in soap interest across the board and getting people to tune out of DAYS as well, even though it has new episodes. Maybe that’s just because the graph in my brain strongly implies that overall soap viewership keep decreasing as the number of shows decreases, though I think which is the cause and which the effect is somewhat debatable.
I’m liking Emily O’Brien so far. Even though they cut away when Jake was showing Ben and Ciara the photo, they eventually showed it to us, and the Gwen was the same one who is at Bayview with Claire Bear. The writing in some episodes feels so grounded and true to character. I loved the conversation Marlena and John had about the possibility of Claire getting out of Bayview and all the things they were considering, things that I think soaps normally just blow past. I was also glad that Ben and Ciara talked about them having basically no friends besides Will and Jake. They should just let Jake be best man and then Ciara can ask Will to be her man of honor. I also love how protective Ciara is of Ben.
And also I have to say kudos to Stephen Nichols for the last two episodes of Steve being drunk and in pain over Kayla’s engagement to Justin. Strong work.June 8, 2020 at 11:05 am #1203521844
Today’s episode was really good, esp. the scenes between Gwen and Claire. Most of the episode revolved around whether Claire is ready to be released from Bayview – loved the surprise ending and Claire’s reaction to it! The whole episode was smooth and interesting throughout. Sonny and Will confronting Jake at the garage was a nice contrast to the Claire drama. Glad to have Olivia Rose Keegan back as Claire!June 8, 2020 at 8:17 pm #1203522842
Great seeing Emily Obrien! She was just on some YR rerun from like 10 years ago and shes the same.June 8, 2020 at 8:24 pm #1203522852
I really liked the episode overall, and I loved that the characters and their various dramas felt appropriately connected. I cannot stress enough what a difference that makes, and made for good tension in all of the scenes surrounding Claire’s potential release. The Will/Sonny/Jake scenes were also funny. It kind of cracks me up know often Will and Sonny go to do something together when really only one of them is needed to do it, but the other is there because they don’t write enough for them. Sonny was basically decoration in those scenes. But Jake must be surprised how much flack he’s getting over Gabi’s kidnapping, considering the reputation shes built with him in such a short time.June 9, 2020 at 2:27 pm #1203524193
Just saw today’s episode on dailymotion (preempted for a George Floyd memorial earlier) and it was another really good one although I could have lived without the scene between Jack, Jennifer and Kate. I loved how Eric wanted to marry that very day but Nicole wants to wait for – Sami! (; Claire has manipulated her way into being released and staying in Salem (of course!). And I know who is on the other side of the door at the end of the episode too – which we will see tomorrow!June 10, 2020 at 10:13 am #1203525801
Why does anyone ever hire Justin as their lawyer? He loses all of his cases! (;
