I find it hard to believe that Melissa Reeves could be let go from the show just for “liking” a few instagram posts. I mean, it’s not like she wrote an entire opinion piece expressing those views for the New York Times, or is actively recruiting DAYS cast members behind the scenes to support her cause. Did anyone even consider that perhaps she might’ve unintentionally hit the “like” button on those posts? (because Lord knows, we’ve all been guilty of that). But social media is so quick to judge that a whole firestorm is set off before we even know the full story.
What I actually found most disheartening was the online bullying of Melissa (sparked by Linsey Godfrey’s reactionary tweet) from fellow DAYS castmates (they know who they are) who chimed in with their own set of gifs and likes, which really did nothing to alleviate the situation. I wish that instead of admonishing her over her actions in such a public manner, those who felt particularly offended had reached out to her privately and set time aside to engage in fruitful discussion. Because without those meaningful discussions, there won’t be any progress from either side going forward.June 30, 2020 at 10:50 am #1203558829
I think it’s an absolute mischaracterization to call the social media posts and responses of some of the cast members bullying, and it also seems unfair to give Melissa the benefit of the doubt that the likes may have been accidental while assuming her cast members have never made an effort to have a discussion with her about these kinds of issues. If this had been an accident or misunderstanding, Melissa certainly had time to explain that, if not before some people were posting about it online (and by the way, DAYS cast members were not the people who exposed the likes on the posts or first discussed it) then before the story became what it was. Instead, her daughter posted a video doubling down on their belief in these views and their right to express them. It is absolutely their right to express those views, but that right goes hand in hand with the rights of others to disagree. Linsey Godfrey and others would publicly disagreed with the views expressed in those posts aren’t bullies. I’m sure many fans were far more disheartened by Melissa’s support for a post that disparages a movement that’s fighting for their basic right to life than could have possibly been by any reactions to that.
People in daytime and all over have certainly been fired for less than liking a post. I think I could probably be caught liking a post or a tweet that said just about anything and still be fine, because most jobs are very different from one where you’re a public figure on television with a public platform. This seems to have mostly died down now, though, and likely other than some awkward interactions when production resumes, it seems like nothing substantial will come of this. But maybe there will be some discussion about it, which would be a positive outcome.June 30, 2020 at 10:55 am #1203558834
What I actually came here to say before I got distracted by the other post is that I am really enjoying the lead-up yo Lani and Eli’s wedding. Vanessa Williams and Marilyn McCoo both look great, and the Eli/Rafe and Lani/Kristen scenes were fun. The one downer for me is how small the wedding is (and how small most of the weddings this month will likely be). The fact that Rafe won’t even be there seems crazy, and Doug not being there just seems weird.July 1, 2020 at 3:21 pm #1203561600
I’ve been enjoying Days a lot lately. I think they’re hitting their stride again so hopefully they keep it up. Louise Sorrell was great in the wedding scene.July 1, 2020 at 8:57 pm #1203562244
I was shocked when Vivian came in at the end of yesterday’s episode. Part of the beauty of DAYS being off a day or two (maybe) is that I’m not sure what day they think it is, so I wasn’t sure quite how early this wedding would wrap up. I thought they’d finish after getting rid of Gabi, and then in walks Louise! She was great in the scenes, and it’s great to see her back. The ending of the wedding, when it finally proceeded without interruption, was lovely.
Also, Gabi is killing me walking around in that disco jumper. I could not love it more. Ben’s face when he saw her was priceless. I think he’d legitimately like to get one for Ciara. Speaking of Ciara, I like her somewhat daring outfit choice as well. It looks like she wanted something that could go from day to evening, but evening includes an audition to play Velma Kelly in Chicago.July 2, 2020 at 7:59 am #1203562836
I have been reading that Lani and Eli’s wedding is supposed to be the first ever African-American wedding on daytime, but that would mean that the following couples never had weddings but were married: Angie & Jessie on AMC, Frank and Nancy on AMC, Calvin and Starr on EON, Calvin and Didi on EON, Hank and Laurie on The Doctors, Ed and Carla on OLTL, Neil and Dru on Y&R – just to name a few! I feel as though I saw some African-American characters get married over the years but maybe they all happened off-screen? Can anybody think of any that definitely happened over the years?July 2, 2020 at 9:52 am #1203563159
I believe there’s been a misunderstanding. Eli and Lani are the first African-American couple to get married on DAYS, but definitely not all of daytime. Among others, I’m sure audiences saw Neil and Drucilla’s wedding on Y&R, Angie and Jesse’s wedding on AMC, and very recently Curtis and Jordan’s wedding on GH. (I was trying to think if we’ve seen one on B&B — did Nicole and Zende get married on B&B?) I was pretty shocked that DAYS wouldn’t have had an African-American wedding on-screen (well, one that actually succeeded in happening) before, but then I thought about Abe and Lexie, the show’s most prominent black characters in the 90s and 2000s, and they were already married when Lexie was introduced. Abe dated a number of characters before Lexie came on, but obviously didn’t marry any of them. DAYS has also generally brought in African-American characters (and also most Asian-American characters they’ve had) by folding them in with the white characters rather than writing them in a unit. For example, Lexie turning out to be a DiMera and Eli being a Horton, plus Paul being John’s son. They’ve entertained quite a few interracial romances over the years, including (famously) David and Valerie, but even recently with Eli/Gabi, Lani/JJ, Lani/Shawn, Theo/Claire, Theo/Ciara, Cameron/Abigail, Jett/Chelsea, and others.
The show sometimes brings on relatives of Abe’s, like his nephew Jett, but they don’t become long-term fixtures. His brother Jonah was a pretty big character for a while in the 90s, but once the triangle/vigilante story with Abe and Lexie was over, he got together with Wendy, and the pair wasn’t important enough to warrant a wedding and at some point just left town, as far as I recall. Almost all of the younger African-American men they brought onto the show between Lexie’s introduction and her death were essentially there to tempt her because they were younger and hotter than Abe (Jonah, Tek, Brandon). They can’t even Abe’s son/Nicole’s brother Brandon back on screen, probably because it would be weird to replace Matt Cedeno, a Latinx actor who was playing what was originally a character with a Latinx father, with a black actor, but it would be equally weird to hire a Latinx actor. This also makes me think how weird it is that Nicole’s father in Latinx.July 2, 2020 at 3:45 pm #1203563943
I had a thought today that maybe Gwen is setting up Claire and is the one doing things to make it seem like Claire is still nuts… they are doing a good job of keeping us guessing if it’s a redemption story or a revenge story where Claire is concerned!
If I were Gabi I would have Jake (Stefan) go and talk to her baby’s daddy Will to learn all about coming back from the dead and believing you are someone else!July 2, 2020 at 9:16 pm #1203564401
I think the girl who plays Gwen has been the best addition to Days in a long time. I hope she becomes a permanent cast member.July 3, 2020 at 12:48 pm #1203565229
Gwen should be revealed to be Drew Donovan’s daughter, which would make her Theresa’s cousin. But I presume they won’t go that route.July 3, 2020 at 6:13 pm #1203565729
I have read that Days will not be going back into production of new episodes until September – which means the turnaround for new episodes will be extremely short as they have episodes filmed that will air through the first full week of October. Here’s hoping they do get back to work in early September so there will be interruption of new episodes.July 3, 2020 at 9:44 pm #1203565903
A question about the Jake/Stefan storyline ? Doesn’t Jake have memories from before 2 years ago ? Even if it could be argued that Jake’s memories were implanted by Rolf, wouldnt there be people in Jakes past that could verify he existed more than 2 years ago (or prove his memories are fake). It seems to be a flaw in this storyline unless Jake has no memories from before 2 years ago, which hasn’t been stated (I think). I am still guessing Jake will turn out to be Stefan’s twin since Vivian has no memories of seeing Stefan after he was born but who knows.
I do agree with others here that Gwen has been a great addition to the show and should stick around. It would be great if she had ties to an established family on the show.July 5, 2020 at 10:12 pm #1203569757
Totally agree with you guys on Emily O’Brien as Gwen! It would be brilliant if they made her Drew Donovan’s daughter, and Eve and Theresa’s cousin! It hadn’t even occurred to me that she could be setting up Claire, but it’s an interesting possibility. Claire still seems like she’s up to something, but it’s pretty hard to tell.
You’re right, soapfandc, in theory, Jake remembers living a whole life that he isn’t really talking about. Now that Gabi has DNA to prove that he’s a match for Stefan — which of course does still allow the possibility of Jake being Stefan’s identical twin, and they did remind us in Friday’s episode that Vivian had no idea the baby was still alive so it’s possible — it seems logical that they would start digging into Jake’s past to either confirm or refute what he thinks are his memories. Everyone other than Gabi had been so dismissive of the idea that Jake is Stefan, and not realizing that Gwen had only met Jake after Stefan’s supposed death, I’m sure most people weren’t really looking for ways to prove or disprove his identity. It will be interesting if they start doing that.
I was under the impression that the show had episodes to run almost through October, so a September 1 start would still leave them a fairly decent buffer. Hopefully waiting until September gives them time to learn from what the other soaps are doing.
I also saw the other day that Greg Meng was fired, which was shocking to me, as he seemed to really be running the show over there. I wonder what happened.July 6, 2020 at 7:25 am #1203570019
I have read conflicting reports as to when their episodes run out, the most recent one I saw said October 9th but another one said they won’t run out of new episodes until Halloween… we’ll have to wait and see and hope they never run out due to having produced new ones in September!
It has been interesting, to say the least, to have only one soap to watch!
I am intrigued as to whether Judi’s return is as Bonnie or Adrienne? I have heard rumors that it is the latter – yet another Dr. Rolfe save? They really should change the name of this show to “Back From the Dead”!!!! (;July 6, 2020 at 2:47 pm #1203570935
I’ve so far only read mention of Bonnie being back, but of course a return from the dead is never out of play here. Compared to some recent soap deaths, I’m wondering even how concretely we saw Adrienne die. She seemed fine for a while after the accident. Someone could have slipped her some of that Romeo & Juliet potion.
