I’ve been out of town for a couple of weeks and thus a couple of weeks behind on soap watching, and wasn’t really reading the boards for fear of spoilers. But I just popped in today and see there hasn’t been a lot of plot discussion anyway.
The SOD podcast interview with Ken Corday was quite interesting. Two of the bits that most intrigued me were the list of writers Ken feels the show’s all-time greats (I forget the exact term he used), which were Irna Phillips, Bill Bell, Pat Falken Smith, James Reilly, and Ron Carlivati, which makes it seem like the speculation that Ron might soon be fired is not coming to pass. The other thing was his comment on the exits, where he basically said that the only people who are hard leaving the show are Kristian Alfonso and Greg Vaughan, and any other news out there about exits he considers to be rumors, as those people, even if off screen for a time, could be back on at any time.
There also continues to be so much casting news! I’m beyond thrilled about Heather Lindell coming back as Jan. She made such a huge impression as Jan, a character who I’d never really liked but who the show kept writing for, making me love her. She was great in the Last Blast Reunion digital series, and I’m glad they capitalized on the Last Blast crew chemistry by getting Chloe, Phillip, and Jan to join Belle and Shawn back in Salem. I’m fond of Kyle Brandt’s Phillip, but JKJ just seems like the real deal to me. (Both are much, much better than JPL’s Phillip, who was not a good fit for the character as he’d played in any previous incarnation.) Also glad to get back Casey Moss and Lucas Adams. I’ve been them finding reasons for Tripp to walk around in his boxers. I wasn’t thrilled to hear Ava would be back, but if the show is planning to get her layers and a more rounded personality, I guess I can stomach it. Tamara Braun got the short end of the stick from both GH and DAYS writing-wise after very successful initial stints at both shows, so maybe they can make it up to her by making Ava less terrible. And will Joey get out of prison if Ava turns up alive? It would seem like good use of Steve and Kayla (who I agree I don’t really need to see getting a lot of story, but they’re clearly getting some) to have them helping out their troubled son, but the character would need a major revamp and certainly to be recast if he’s going to be worth watching. After hearing the SOD interview (and seeing Djoko’s prediction, of course), I’m not at all surprised at Freddie and Chandler being back for visits. DAYS should really up the ante and let Will be in Salem full-time while Sonny comes and goes, and let the relationship struggle from there.September 17, 2020 at 8:30 am #1203712543
I continue to be upset by the way everybody is ganging up on Sami. Glad that Allie is back though. I had to stop watching for a while yesterday during the dumping on Sami scenes. I wish Will and Sonny had adopted the baby. Allison Sweeney has been phenomenal thoughout her time on the show and am glad she will be continuing for awhile longer!September 22, 2020 at 7:46 am #1203727528
I’ve really been enjoying Days lately. The focusing on Shawn and Belle and bringing back characters around them has been so entertaining. I love love love Heather Lindell being back. She has been so great. I thought it was weird when Sarah saw Xander giving his card to Jan that the first thing that didn’t go through her mind was that he was cheating on her. That would’ve definitely been my first thought. I’ve also been really liking the actress playing Allie and not liking the Claire recast. There is just so much hypocrisy going around the way Jan is treated compared to Claire and Ben. Everyone in Salem was just at a wedding for a serial killer.September 22, 2020 at 7:52 am #1203727549
I thought the confrontation between Sami and Allie yesterday was really good. Allison Sweeney has done a really good job of modulating Sami’s behavior. Sometimes you can tell she’s being somewhat out of control, but then there are episodes like yesterday where Allie is trying to make Sami look like the big bad wolf and Sami is just being reasonable. One of the things this story continues to do (or maybe not the story so much as Allie and several other characters) is paint Sami as a maniac for doing things that seem perfectly reasonable, like not wanting baby-stealing murderer Nicole to raise her grandson. It has been a little frustrating watching people treat Sami the way they have. I don’t see why Allie initially was getting the benefit of the doubt from everyone when she showed up pregnant by some mystery guy after spending however long being completely irresponsible and partying around Europe.
Anyway, I liked that Sami called Allie out on trying to give the baby to Nicole mostly to hurt her, which is clearly true. It also feels like Allie’s issues are a lot less about Sami being controlling or messy or whatever and more resentment about Sami’s devotion to EJ, which is irritating from a story perspective because EJ was as good a stepfather to Allie as Rafe was. But maybe it’s more a resentment that Sami committed to Johnny/Sydney’s father and not hers. It could be interesting to dig deeper, but I have a hard time accepting Allie’s motives at face value. In any event, I hope Sami does take that baby to Rome (not that she won’t be back soon anyway), and then Allie can either come along or not.
Also, Nicole selflessly encouraging Eric to go help the people in the village where he used to live, especially under the guise of not wanting to stop him from being who he is, days after she let him lie for her in court regarding her killing Deimos, feels extremely off. But whatever, I’ll be glad when these two are apart again, because they became pretty insufferable pretty fast as a pair.September 22, 2020 at 11:55 am #1203728143
I agree, Djoko, I’ve really enjoyed the focus on Belle and Shawn and love having Phillip and Jan back as well. I was over the moon getting Heather Lindell back on the show, and I’m glad that she was instantly getting mixed up with other characters as well. Isabel Durant is not nearly as much fun as Olivia Rose Keegan was as Claire, but I like her. It’s kind of like a Kate Mansi/Marci Miller situation. The role is being treated very differently than it was with ORK, I guess because they’ve turned the corner in terms of us wondering whether or not Claire is truly reformed, and now she’s more like a nice girl with a troubled past.September 22, 2020 at 1:06 pm #1203728288
By the way, in Freddie Smith’s latest podcast on YouTube he and his fiance said they’re moving to Florida in a week. If opportunities arise in California they’ll still go there for work, but they will be settling down in Florida. I’m really happy for them. They seem very cool and down to Earth. I can’t wait till he is back on Days with Chandler next year.September 23, 2020 at 8:30 am #1203729791
I’m mostly liking the show, but the fact of Brady deciding to save Kristen by doing the same thing he’s now failed at doing twice before seems very, very dumb. Annoyingly dumb. I so appreciated when Victor and Brady called Eli over to claim that it was Brady, not Kristen, who had stabbed Victor, and Eli explained the consequences of what that dumb lie would be. At this point, they’ve all talked quite openly about Kristen stabbing Victor (he maybe deserved it, she wasn’t in her right mind, etc.), so I’m having a very hard time seeing how this could work. It would be so much smarter to just hire a good defense attorney (not Belle, who is more of a corporate lawyer, and not Justin, who is a terrible lawyer, losing cases now to even Sami) do deal with it than perpetrating silly shenanigans.September 25, 2020 at 11:45 pm #1203735910
Freddie Smith said on his podcast that even though Ken Corday said Will and Sonny will be back next year, no one has reached out to him with an offer to come back. He said he would only come back for a three month stint since he and his fiance are moving to Florida this week. He also said the earliest he would be available to shoot would be in March because he has other projects he is working on.September 28, 2020 at 7:47 am #1203738941
If this were a year ago and DAYS claimed something was happening next year, they would have already had to be planning it at least, if not writing it. But now, since they lost so much of the show’s lead time and can’t really make up the gap filming under COVID restrictions, they’re only like six weeks from filming to air, so there’s still plenty of time for Ken to reach out to Freddie and Chandler and still have them back on relatively soon. (Also, sometimes Ken Corday will say things that he intends to happen and then they may not materialize.) Though really, Freddie being unavailable to come back full time (and by the way, good for him) feels like an opportunity to have them come back and visit and then set up the potential for Will to be on his own and in a different type of story.
I was glad that Sami and Allie had a nice goodbye as Sami was leaving. It’s exciting that she’ll be back again so soon. I’m also looking forward to seeing how the relationship between Nicole and Allie develops in the time Sami will be away. Oh, also, I’ve been meaning to ask: Do we know what happened to Nicole’s job at Basic Black? She mentioned off-handedly a couple of weeks ago that she’s not working right now. But I don’t recall there being any movement at Basic Black since she was annoyed the Brady was leaving to run/tank Titan. It seems like just an issue of plot convenience (which is extremely annoying), but maybe I missed something. I would also ask about money, but it feels impossible to keep track of how much money a character like Nicole would actually have.
This is not at all plot related, but Kayla and Tripp were absolutely butchering those apples they were supposed to be peeling for pie. It was cool that they were actually peeling apples, but they were cutting so much apple off with the skin that it was distracting to me.September 28, 2020 at 5:22 pm #1203740085
^^^ LOL! The same thought was running through my mind… they cut so much apple away that it was enough to make a whole extra pie!
Anyways, kudos to Drake Hogestyn who has been so stellar in his very realistic portrayal of John’s subtle behavioral changes and sudden mood swings post aneurysm surgery. Too often his talents get overlooked, but Drake’s scenes the last few weeks reminded me once again of what a truly gifted actor he is.September 28, 2020 at 7:53 pm #1203740314
I agree. Drake Hogestyn has been great in these scenes. I meant to cite him in the other thread, but i forgot. He’s not perfect, but he can deliver in emotional scenes, i still wish he had gotten nominated for the DNR storyline, his scenes with belle arguing over marlena’s DNR request, were really well acted.September 28, 2020 at 9:00 pm #1203740417
I agree, Drake’s doing well in the current story. I always appreciate how much Drake commits to everything the storyline has John do. I don’t love that they are kind of doing a repeat of what happened when Will got a brain tumor from the memory reviving serum he took, but it does seem to be executed slightly better so far this time around from a writing perspective.
Also, after the reveal of Allie’s baby’s father in today’s episode, I was trying to recall the last time there was a baby on this show whose father was actually who we/the characters were told it was initially. Thinking about: Mackenzie turning out to be Rachel (and hence not Eric’s baby), Charlotte being Chad’s rather than Stefan’s, Mimi’s baby with Rex not actually being Bonnie’s baby with Lucas, Thomas being Chad’s rather than Ben’s, Holly being Nicole and Daniel’s baby rather than Deimos and Chloe’s . . . I guess when we finally found out who David’s father was, that actually did stick, but only because there was a twist configured into the reveal. Anyway, this seems unlikely to stick.September 29, 2020 at 12:45 am #1203740760
It would be awesome to see Drake back in the Emmys conversation this year, if only to make up for that unfortunate snub a few years back where his wonderful work surrounding Marlena’s DNR storyline was overlooked. I’m sure Drake will have more great scenes to come in the following weeks, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed!September 29, 2020 at 9:25 am #1203741520
I read a while back that Days had enough episodes to get through the beginning of October 6 months ago – so newly filmed episodes over the past month or so ought to be starting up really soon – I wonder how long it will be until Sami returns???September 29, 2020 at 2:03 pm #1203742832
Yes, Kristian Alfonso tweeted the other day that her last airdate is October 14, so they have banked episodes at least that far. Ken Corday had said, when talking to SOD, that they had episodes through October 15, so I would guess that as soon as late October we could be seeing Rafe, Gabi, and Sami showing up again.
