I find all the Claire/Charlie scenes that have Jan or Xander in them to be hilarious, and I’m also getting a kick out of Sarah sleuthing around Phillip on behalf of Xander. That stuff is at least fun even if it makes little sense sometimes. Charlie was losing it because Claire didn’t want to have dinner with him two days in a row? Sarah dropped Phillip off at the Horton Town Square and then somehow got into disguise and to a nearby newsstand by the time he walked in? No one warned Claire not to tell Jan Spears anything (let alone everything) about the wedding?
I’m eagerly waiting for Sami’s return, but I’m now worried it won’t be happening any time soon. I’m looking forward to Gabi being back very soon though, and actually Rafe as well.
Also, kudos to Cady McClain, who is doing a really admirable job with this storyline she was thrown into. The writing isn’t very strong — her having to weepily shout, “You slept with another woman while I was in a coma!” feels more like a parody of a soap than an actual soap — and, even aside of having embarked on this ill-advised story, isn’t really doing it in a way that makes character sense for Jack or Jennifer. The Kate/Jennifer conversation was mostly good. I’m glad they hit the beat of Kate’s history with Bill and Laura, and honestly it was nice of Kate not to throw it in Jennifer’s face that Jack also slept with Laura so maybe he’s a problem. Jennifer threatening to use her powers as an investigative journalist to make Kate miserable or whatever she said felt out of character and really very silly.
The show also continues to have so few corporate employees who aren’t interns/trainees or CEO. At least now Jake will be a VP, though given that his entire experience at DiMera is one barbecue dinner, that seems like a leap as well.November 20, 2020 at 11:09 am #1203850480
Jan in the wedding dress was good but seems like the end.November 23, 2020 at 7:23 am #1203857032
Slightly spoilery, but DAYS just released a holiday preview where we see returns in some fashion or another from Gabi, Rafe, Chloe, Will, Valerie, Tony, Anna and Joey. Ciara is in it as well, but since she’s technically still recurring, I wouldn’t her appearance as a return (and it seemed to be in the same vein as her last few appearances). No Sami, though. 🙁November 24, 2020 at 8:02 pm #1203869720
Days has been so much better lately, but that’s because of Heather Lindell and Emily O’Brien. I really hope this isn’t the end of Jan on the show.November 24, 2020 at 9:00 pm #1203870034
All of the stuff with Jan and the wedding has been so, so funny. According to reports, today was Jan’s last day on air. I really hope Jan is fine and will just be remanded somewhere for further psychiatric care and then brought back soon. She’s been so much fun to have around, and really hadn’t done anything that backed her into any kind of corner until the last few episodes. I would love to see them need Jan for something down the line and just have to deal with her brand of kooky. Hopefully she’s okay. I really don’t see them wanting to get John pulled into a murder story. I’m kind of glad they picked up John’s brain issue again, mostly because they’d just dropped it without any real explanation. John seemed to have been acting weird the from the time Jan showed up at the wedding, but everyone was acting like it was normal. Maybe it was just how Drake chose to play it.
Also, funny: Maggie and Phillip talking about Xander having a problem respecting boundaries shortly followed by him trying to look in on the mystery woman in the shower.November 25, 2020 at 7:43 am #1203871670
I still think they need to bring on Susan Walters as Hope. Roman formerly Chris, discussing her absence, highlighted how her presence is missed. They don’t necessarily need to give Susan a big storyline but Shawn D really had no family representing his side at the wedding.November 30, 2020 at 6:42 am #1203884265
My original thought had been that they really should not recast Hope, but now I’m starting to feel like someone else playing the character would be preferable to her just being gone. The loss really does feel huge. Susan Walters is a good option, though I think there could be better ones out there. I don’t get much of an action cop vibe from her, which I think would be needed.
I have to say, DAYS usually does a great job around Thanksgiving and Christmas, but I think they pretty well missed the mark on Thanksgiving this year. If they were going to be devoted to moving their plots along, I would have preferred they just have the holiday happen off screen. Seeing the Hortons gather with only six people felt extremely anemic, especially when there are plenty of other Hortons. The show often will focus on families that aren’t the Hortons or Bradys for Thanksgiving, which makes sense, because those families get more focus at Christmas. I get not needing to show a second full-family Horton gathering within a month’s time, but then they should have just focused on other groupings. I certainly didn’t urgently need to resume the story with Jennifer and Jack or with Gwen, Abigail and Chad, especially when it was a shift from the much more entertaining stuff that was happening with Belle and Shawn’s wedding. I feel like we ended Tuesday with a cliffhanger about Jan’s condition and have yet to year how she’s doing. We don’t know if John spent Thanksgiving in police custody. It also felt silly seeing Jennifer leaving the Horton house, where she had been living for years and years before she and Jack moved into the mansion to help with Charlotte and Thomas while Abigail for treatment in Florida, to go back to a room at the Salem Inn. Why doesn’t she just move back into her house? Why didn’t JJ just stay there instead of getting a hotel? The show is too enamored with the Salem Inn set and really overuses it.December 1, 2020 at 9:23 am #1203887077
I was thinking about how many different and interesting guest performers there have been in 2020: Alison Sweeney, Kassie DePaiva, Louise Sorel, James Read, Marie Wilson, Bryan Dattilo, the performers who portrayed Vincent, Orpheus, Melinda Trask, also Thia Megia, among so many others!
I have taking it or leaving it where Days is concerned – if I can find something else to do I will leave it!
Did Allie ever announce her decision as far as forwarding charges to England? There have been so many breaking news stories lately I may have missed it??? Or has it been left hanging???December 2, 2020 at 8:28 am #1203889382
I haven’t seen yesterday’s show yet, and honestly don’t recall if she’d made a firm decision before that. After her latest conversation with Tripp, she was leaning toward letting it go rather than having the charges forwarded to London. And from a storyline perspective, it’s hard to imagine the show wanting to even pretend to process something through the British justice system. They couldn’t even bother to pretend Nicole is still running Basic Black.
I thought I’d be happy to see Rafe back, but once he was on screen, I felt very blah about it. I think the show had the right idea in getting rid of the character, unless they find something exciting to do with him. This is the one silver lining of Hope not being around — they have to do something better than that with him. But it was wonderful to have Gabi back! And the poor dear, imagine how it must feel to find out you’re losing a battle for your love’s affections to your daughter’s great grandmother, and she isn’t even trying.December 4, 2020 at 9:22 am #1203894178
Anybody else think that Claire will be raped by Charlie but blame Tripp???
Ava showing up at the end yesterday and holding the gun on Claire was very dramatic! I feel so bad for Tripp right now. His mom is back from the dead and she’s crazy and Claire has accused him of rape. I hope this isn’t a case where they will tell us that Tripp has been lying to us.December 4, 2020 at 4:49 pm #1203895039
I do not care about Ava. Her sanctimonious ass being nasty to Allie after she herself raped Steve was just too much. And her reunion with Tripp was flat. No one asked for this character back!December 7, 2020 at 8:35 am #1203900265
I think Ron and co. think the Tripp/Allie story is interesting and kind of unexpected, but I mostly just find it uncomfortable and unfortunate. Ava charging in and taking the gun from Allie was dramatic and kind of fun (and Allie asking Ava for the gun back was very funny), but there’s so much wrong with everything surrounding it. Ava blackmailing Phillip into laundering money through Titan is an interesting angle for what Phillip is doing, even if it does just feel like someone watched Ozark and decided that daytime should also have storylines explicitly about laundering money, but honestly I would have preferred that be a new character. Ava isn’t showing signs of being any less of a terrible character than she was her last time around, and I don’t believe anyone was writing letters into the show begging for Joey’s return. Many fans apparently have expressed the same suspicion that many of us had, that Charlie is actually the person who raped Allie and not Tripp, though at this point I’m kind of hoping there’s another explanation. I like Charlie and think he’s very cute, though I guess I liked him a little more before he got busted snooping through Phillip’s computer and folded like a house of cards. The story at this point has no good options — even if it turns out that, surprise, Tripp did rape Allie after all, it would feel like a huge betrayal of what we’ve been seeing — so they should just get the reveal over with and move on. When Tripp left town, Kayla was more of a parent to him than even Steve had been, and they’ve already flushed that down the drain in service to this dumb story. Please let’s just end it.
It’s also funny that as soon as I mentioned how Nicole wasn’t running Basic Black anymore, it was suddenly in the plot again. It was really irritating that during the story where Nicole (and Eric) wanted to be raising Allie’s baby, Nicole had said she wasn’t working and had lots of time for parenting, with no explanation about Basic Black, but it’s even more annoying that Basic Black has popped back up for provide a story for Brady. Nicole is only in charge of Basic Black long enough to make Brady a 50/50 co-CEO with her, which is absolutely ridiculous for a lot of reasons, including that Brady is both unreliable and an idiot, and that it feels ludicrous that someone fully in charge of a company would just get talked into splitting that with someone with no compelling arguments. It’s kind of infuriating. But I guess if this story in any way helps move Brady away from Kristen, and it seems like it might with Chloe in the mix, I’m all for that.December 8, 2020 at 8:05 am #1203902891
I really dislike Philp intensely and am disappointed that they brought him back yet again. He’s a total bore and a waste of screen time!
We haven’t seen Victor and Maggie very much lately ):
For me the one performer who I have been enjoying is Lucas Adams as Tripp. The rest is really blah, even characters I usually enjoy, such as Zander and Marlena.
What would it take for this show to ‘turn on a dime’ and become interesting again? Personally I want Will back full time, as well as Sami!December 8, 2020 at 8:45 am #1203903084
Michael (Emmyloser) – I have written you a private message!
what would others do to improve Days right now???December 8, 2020 at 9:02 am #1203903184
Good question, Freeman. I wonder what it would take. I think the biggest difference between now and earlier in the year when the show felt generally more interesting to watch is that before there were compelling characters and motivations driving the story, and now that’s fairly lacking. Everything Gabi and Sami were doing when they were on, Nicole digging for the truth about the baby switch, Ciara in her quest to get Ben out of jail and then to find him after the wedding, even stuff like Victor and later Will and others trying to keep Maggie from finding out what they thought she’d done with accident and Adrienne’s death. Even Jan trying to work her way back into Shawn’s life was great to watch, because Jan is such a compelling character.
Now, most of the characters who are driving story don’t seem all that driven and don’t have particularly great motives. Gwen, who is great as a golddigging troublemaker but less so as a revenge-driven mastermind, wants payback against Abigail for, as far as we know, no reason. Ava is making Phillip try to launder money through Titan, which, as much as I love Sarah and Xander’s shenanigans, who really cares. Ava also still wants Steve back, which feels as unlikely to happen as it does unbelievable. (Because any loving relationship that ever existed between Steve and Ava happened off screen, there’s no way for the audience to buy it.) Allie wants to make Tripp pay for a crime that everyone in Salem, but no one watching, believes he committed. Claire and Charlie are growing closer. Ben misses his presumed dead wife. Lani can’t forgive Eli for putting Kristen behind bars (kudos to Abe in yesterday’s episode for calling out that the attempted murder is one of like a hundred thousand crimes Kristen’s committed and that Lani is acting like Eli brought trumped up charges against Mother Theresa). While it’s not like these are all terrible stories, not one of them feels like anything that’s must see.
Most of these could at least be improved fairly easily — expose why Gwen wants revenge on Abigail and stop having them believe every ridiculous lie and manipulation she puts on them, just end Ava’s desire for Steve, forget the money laundering, tell us who actually raped Allie and deal with that, let Kristen go back to being a villain and let Lani and Brady deal with that, etc. I also think the show is relying too heavily on things that happened off screen to drive story and not letting the consequences of stories that are playing out become the motivations for new stories.
