Ben and Ciara are so nauseating for me. It’s the perfect example of “good girl, awful choice in a man” and I hate the way other characters are sacrificed to make Ben a “hero” (Eve, Vincent). The only redeeming thing in the story is Marlena and Ben’s bond. Deidre being Emmy-less has always been one of daytime’s greatest crimes.March 22, 2021 at 11:57 am #1204151136
I love Ben and Ciara, but I understand what you’re saying. The way Eve was made into a murderous psychopath to further that story is awful. (I don’t care about Vincent, since he was only created for that plot.) This is just part of the reason why I need this show to slow down the revolving door. If Ron is bringing characters in for a brief visit, the chances of them doing something criminally insane are very high. Even if they manage not to do something crazy, the character is usually thrown under the bus. Look at how dumb Rex seems now with this whole Kristen/Sarah fiasco. Then again, this storyline is making fools of all of us.
I was listening to Roger Howarth’s Soap Opera Digest podcast interview the other day, and he was talking about his early days at OLTL and a young writers assistant who would hang out in the makeup room and listen to the actors running lines, and that was of course Ron Carlivati. It made me think how cool it must have been for a show to get a head writer who had been hanging around for like 10 or 15 years, taking in all these things happening with the characters, the ways the actors interacted and probably storing up all kinds of story ideas, developing a real love for the show and the characters. Even with the missteps, it was clear how much Ron’s heart was in it when he was writing OLTL, and he feels so far from that now writing DAYS. These characters seem to be treated almost like pieces on a chessboard or numbers in an equation. As a viewer who actually cares about the characters, it’s very frustrating.
Anyway, congrats to the DAYS writing team on their WGA win yesterday!March 22, 2021 at 12:52 pm #1204151248
At least they got back to the Charlie murder mystery today and we got flashback scenes with Mike Manning as Charlie and new information about Allie’s bringing the gun to his apartment – but – we had to put up with all that Kristen/Sarah nonsense, which took up too much of the episode ):March 23, 2021 at 11:16 am #1204153189
Kristen, disguised as Sarah, is pushing a trunk big enough to fit a person, which she just had lying around I guess, through town in the middle of the day, and people are apparently thinking nothing of this. They’re not even trying to make it make sense!March 31, 2021 at 7:53 am #1204167476
I’ve been bored watching the show lately – even the murder mystery is falling flat for me. I have been watching and enjoying Y&R instead, which has gotten better finally.
Is it time to start a new Days thread? I have been getting error messages when I try to post the past several times???March 31, 2021 at 8:04 pm #1204168550
Hmm, I haven’t had any issues posting on this particular thread, but I did have problems logging in the other day. Every time I went into a thread to post, I’d be logged out again. That seems to have gone away, though.
I’m glad to hear Y&R has finally gotten more entertaining. I wish DAYS was improving but the show is mostly flat or just so beyond nonsense. I agree that the show is totally mishandling the murder mystery. It was such a promising setup with over a dozen potential suspects, but for some reason they’ve decided on this approach where the story only airs once or twice a week and we’re just considering suspects one at a time and then essentially clearing them. This story, like most of them, feels like it’s on autopilot with no destination set. The show needs a new headwriter. Ron seems uninterested in most anything outside of Jackee’s Paulina (who I am enjoying) and keeping the revolving door going to see can get our quota of incarcerated lunatics in every couple of weeks.
I read on Daytime Confidential that Dan Feuerriegel has been cast as nuEJ and will debut this summer. That’s theoretically exciting, but given the way most of the characters on this show have been treated, he’ll probably be doing something infuriating that makes no sense within weeks of his arrival.April 1, 2021 at 8:05 am #1204169055
^^^I forgot to say joke episodes! Ron also loves his joke episodes for April Fools Day and Halloween.April 2, 2021 at 8:32 am #1204170753
The April Fools Day episode was a lot of fun — why can’t characters like Phillip and Chloe be more fun on a regular basis? — but the best part was that Jan is actually coming out of her coma. I thought for sure her return was just for this episode, so it was a pleasant surprise when she was waking up at the end. There were a lot of fun little nods to past stories, though repeating the Jack/Jennifer dialogue from the time jump episode felt a little self-aggrandizing, and John’s line that he should have hired Carrie was hilarious. The only storyline that didn’t really fit was the Steve/Kayla stuff with the Stefano clone. It was just so unrelated to everything else that was happening and also a reminder of a horrendous story beat. It also made me think: If the show really just wants another Stefano (even though they basically already did this with Stefan O.), they could just have a 30ish Italian guy show up and eventually be revealed to be a clone of Stefano, and then write him as a young Stefano. This probably wouldn’t work for the show now, though, because for one thing they kind of have too many DiMera siblings already with Chad, Jake, Kristen, Tony and soon EJ, and also they don’t seem to have the patience to bring in a character who can be a long-term, sustainable villain, not someone they’re going to burn in six months by having him do something heinous.April 6, 2021 at 3:22 am #1204181279
My guess as to why they included that bit with the clone baby must be that Gwen is about to be pregnant. Ron always thinks we will be so shocked but most folks knew right off the bat that Charlie would be Allie’s attacker.April 6, 2021 at 8:35 am #1204181693
Ugh, that makes sense, but I hope it’s not true.
I’m glad the murder mystery is now getting a little momentum and that our dear Samantha is out of jail. And I have to say, the moment on Friday with Charlie and Ava when Charlie was dying and just wanted Ava to say she loves him was pretty heartbreaking. Very well performed.
I’m also glad they mentioned Hope, though what they said doesn’t really make much sense. At this point, if they’re not getting a recast, just say that Hope decided to settle somewhere nearby like Chicago or Brookeville, that she doesn’t want to come back to Salem after everything that happened, and that Ciara went there to see/spend some time with her for a few days. This “we can’t find her” business is kind of absurd.
Do we think Tripp moved back in with Steve and Kayla? Or is he still living in Ava’s apartment that she’s living with Rafe because she can’t afford?April 6, 2021 at 10:51 am #1204181979
I miss Mike Manning’s Charlie Dale – of course we are still seeing him in the flashbacks and like Micheal said he was very touching and moving in his scene with Ava the other day.
I am pretty bored by almost everything on the show at the moment.
If there is going to be a nuEJ does that mean Sami will be on the show too??? Or is it a short-term visit only???April 6, 2021 at 2:40 pm #1204182402
I haven’t seen anything about the intended length of nuEJ’s stay in Salem, and actually the whole thing is still filed under rumor since I don’t think it’s been officially confirmed by the show or the actor. But based on the commercial for this week, it looks like there may be some reignition of the old Sami/Lucas magic, so there might be some drama to play out there.April 7, 2021 at 3:53 pm #1204184863
As soon as they moved Ava away from tormenting Steve and Kayla, she became tolerable. I like her rapport with Nicole and Rafe.
Ben owes Marlena an apology. She can’t always drop everything for his crocodile tears over Ciara.April 7, 2021 at 9:00 pm #1204185263
The funny thing about Claire being so gung-ho about Ciara getting her memories back is that Ciara only sort of conditionally forgave Claire a few weeks before she went missing and was presumed dead. All the memories leading up to that were worse things Claire had done, so it’s not even unreasonable that Ciara remembered that fire first. I like Ben, but obviously at this point he needs to just take a step back and be glad Ciara’s not dead. This is as bad as the way Sonny was harassing Will when he had amnesia. Speaking of characters who had amnesia, I can’t believe how much focus we’re getting on Jack, a character who the show spent a year writing as morally bankrupt and totally insufferable. I know Jack and Jennifer are a popular pairing, even though I’ve never liked them together, but I really don’t think that Jack on his own is all that appealing, especially now. Jennifer needs to come back. The absence of Hortons felt really glaring when Julie was talking to Jack about what happened with Sarah and Xander’s wedding (completely unrealistic that nosy Julie wouldn’t have already found out about this) and other family gossip. No Hope, no Jennifer, no Maggie, no Sarah . . .
I agree Ava is considerably better being in this storyline with Rafe and Nicole than when she was trying to get Steve back, and Steve at least seems like a decent person to want to be with. One of the major problems I’m having is that some of these guys are just jackasses that it’s hard to imagine anybody putting forth an effort to be with them. Jack, Brady, Rex, and Chad all seem pretty terrible to me (though in Chad’s defense, he’s mostly just terrible to Abigail).April 9, 2021 at 7:17 am #1204187993
I was watching online yesterday a scene someone posted of Kristen and Marlena from late 2012, and it was so great, and such a contrast to everything happening now with Kristen. Talk about a show just totally losing its grip on what makes a character sizzle. Who could watch those scenes and think it’s worth squashing the Marlena/Kristen rivalry for the sake of a Kristen/Brady relationship? Kristen seemed so clever and calculating then, and now she mostly seems like an unhinged lunatic.
Also, Jack can go to hell with the “good people on both sides” type nonsense he’s trying to perpetuate between Abigail and Gwen. It’s one thing to try to broker peace between them, but to act like Abigail has as much to apologize for as Gwen is asinine. Though I am warming up to the idea of Gwen being pregnant with Chad’s baby. It allows Gwen to continue to be a problem for Chad and Abigail without her having to do any more insane things.
