I spent part of my day today watching Chandler and Freddie in online interviews over the past year or so on Michael Fairman and Freddie & Allysa – it really makes me angry that Wilson is gone and they are wasting our time on so many inane stories esp. Brady and Kristen. I was also really shocked to learn that Chandler had submitted in lead for 2018 and the dummies did not nominate him for his phenomenal work that year ):
Freddie has moved to Florida and Chandler has moved to Atlanta – Chandler has been pursuing work in the economic consultant field (he has a degree in it) but is open to returning to acting in the future – and both of them are open to returning to Days if the circumstances are right for them.
I have cut down on watching Days – have been watching for the who killed Charlie? storyline but really have been incredibly unhappy with the direction of the show. Yes, I love the actors, but the stories are not being told well. It bugs me that there are no regular gay male characters on the four shows right now – yes, Lucas, Felix and Brad make occasional rare appearances but have no real storyline. I don’t think it’s a coincidence at all that all the gay males are gone (Mariah and her girlfriend are featured frequently on Y&R but I mean gay male characters).
Days is at 30% right now, Y&R is at 50%, GH is at 66% – not sure about B&B, I haven’t been watching it. What I mean is that is the percentage of worthwhile stories or wonderful acting that is happening imo on each of those 3 shows. What I believe is missing from daytime is actually a commitment to strong storytelling, more than bigger budgets – caring more about the stories than the actor – I think they have this backwards right now.April 12, 2021 at 8:10 am #1204195528
You make some good points, Freeman. I think you’re right that the commitment to strong storytelling is somewhat lacking across the board. DAYS seems to have prioritized attempting to attract viewers, which is of course something that any show would want to do but goes about it in ways that are detrimental to the storytelling and honestly in many cases frustrating to the audience. For one thing, if you’re constantly chasing an audience you don’t have, you’re doing so at the expense of the audience you do have, which is a backwards approach. The show seems willing to irritate or upset existing viewers to try to lure in people who aren’t watching with stories that sound more exciting than they are and by constantly bringing people in from wherever. Some of that’s been good in terms of characters coming back — it’s great having Belle, Shawn and Jan, for example; I was glad to have Phillip at first, but the whole storyline with the money-laundering was dumb and it’s what’s led to this current HORRENDOUS story with Kristen — but the writing is so inconsistent and generally shows so little regard for character, logic, or what happened before. For example, this story with Jan and Belle, where they’re saying John may be arrested to attempting to kill Jan if she decides to press charges. But he already was arrested! It was a whole story point that Marlena, Claire, etc. begged Eli not to arrest John, but since he witnessed the attempted murder, he had no choice. John spent Thanksgiving in jail, and then Belle got him out on bail. Now they’re acting like none of that ever happened, and it’s so stupid.
I do miss having both Will and Sonny on the show as characters. At this point, I’m not as invested in them being a couple — I think they just have more interesting story opportunities when they’re apart — but the way they were written off is frustrating, especially considering some of the people and stories we are seeing play out. Maybe if one or both of them gets an Emmy nom this year, which seems plausible, since they were the focal characters of the show’s best material from 2020, the show will be interested in courting them back.April 12, 2021 at 10:43 am #1204195871
I haven’t been feeling well the past few days and spent time watching online content, including Dishin’ Days, which is fun, and then I also watched quite a number of Days Emmy reel acting submissions that are available on youtube. The very best ones imo were Chandler Massey’s 2012 coming out to Marlena reel and his 2019 prison reel where he breaks up with Sonny; True O’Brien’s 2015 winning reel where she confronts Eve and then J.J. over their having sex together; Eileen Davidson’s 2013 reel where she confronts Marlena; Alison Sweeney’s 2014 reel where she learns of E.J.’s betrayal; Casey Moss’s 2017 reel where he contemplates suicide; and Greg Vaughan’s 2017 reel where he is disappointed by Nicole who has been blackmailed into leaving him by yucky Brady, and Melissa Reeves was great in her 2015 reel confronting Eve and J.J. when she catches them having sex (I don’t like Melissa the human being but she’s a very talented actress).
Disappointing reels were Mary Beth Evans 2015 reel – the first part was fine, her telling Bo he was dying but it wasn’t Emmy worthy for me, and the 2nd shorter part was so stupid and insipid I have to wonder about the mental abilities of the blue ribbon panelists that year. Kassie’s reel was too one note, all grief, that year but it was still Emmy worthy and it’s disappointing she didn’t win (she had much better material she ought to have submitted). Arianne Zucker’s 2013 Best Actress reel was disappointing – very one note and flat for me (but I love her and she had much better material she ought to have submitted that year). As for Peggy McCay, she probably would have won had she submitted correctly in Supporting Actress, and she may have robbed Alison Sweeney of a win by submitting in lead – I have never been as moved by her speech as others are (the speech at Will and Sonny’s wedding).
I didn’t watch the other reels yet that I haven’t mentioned here. The 2019 Massey clip was the actual episode in it’s entirety and I don’t think he submitted the entire episode. There don’t seem to be any clips from before 2011, and there don’t seem to be any from last year either.April 13, 2021 at 7:42 am #1204197827
^^On some of these I totally agree, and others not so much. Kassie DePaiva’s lead actress reel submission was good but also disappointing. She went for the bait-y material when she had done her best work (and was getting much more interesting and character-based writing) earlier in the year before the show changed headwriters. However, I did like Mary Beth Evans’ reel a lot. The contrast of the heavy heartache in the Kayla/Bo scenes and the levity of the Kayla/Steve scenes worked for me. Peggy McCay submitting in lead for her 2014 work was so odd, but I very much doubt it affected Alison Sweeney’s chances. As great as Sweeney was, Maura West was just better that year. The way the balloting works, I don’t think vote splitting is really an issue.
I’m interested to see where things go with this Xander/Chanel story. Xander’s face when he found out they’d gotten married and then his reaction to Eli and Paulina showing up were both great. I hope this doesn’t become a situation like the EJ/Abigail thing, where everyone kept acting like EJ had taken advantage of Abigail when actually she very pointedly exploited his problems with Sami to get him into bed. I can see people acting like Xander tricked or manipulated Chanel when clearly she’s the one in the driver’s seat and probably not being super truthful about how any of the night went down.
I am not sure how much more of Kristen “pretending” to be Susan I can take, and more than that, of no one knowing anything about it. It seems like there are so many ways they could make the story feel at least less ridiculous. It would be more fun if Brady knew that it was really Kristen and was just going along with it to spend time with her while really questioning whether he had feelings for Chloe. Then Brady could cover for her and try to make her behavior seem less puzzling, and also look like less of an idiot. Also, considering that Kristen destroyed Sarah’s relationship with Xander and marooned her on an island, it seems like she’s really soft-pedaling Chloe. Why do all this talking and prodding when she could instead try any number of more aggressive tactics, like kidnapping, threatening, creating a job in another city, etc.? Now Kristen’s nosing into the situation with Sami and Lucas, which is likely to be irritating.April 13, 2021 at 12:16 pm #1204198509
Boy, did I ever hate that scene between Kristen and Sami today – why oh why can’t they give Kristen a rest???? I am so sick of the sight of her!!!
I was thinking about my history with Days – I started watching the show in 1982 but did not watch on a regular daily basis until 2011. In the 1980’s my favorite character was Melissa, played by Lisa Trusel for 6 years. Then when she left I didn’t watch a whole lot until a new actress came on the show as the formidable teenaged terror called Sami Brady (Alison Sweeney) – I really only watched the show until 2011 when Sami would have a strong storyline but in those years the New York based shows were still on the air and I preferred them. I had two VCR’s and I taped the ABC and the CBS shows, particularly AMC and OLTL on ABC, and ATWT and GL on CBS – they were my four favorites. So sometimes when I have a different opinion I think it’s because I don’t have the long relationships with certain characters and performers on the show as others do.
I would love to know which Days performers have submitted for Emmy consideration this year and in which category!!! I miss when we would know these things and especially much earlier than this in the following calendar year!!!April 14, 2021 at 7:58 am #1204200038
I have read that Alison Sweeney is sticking around for 7 months – I so hope this is accurate and true???
I have also read that Suzanne Rogers requested time off from the show? Anybody know if that is accurate and true? I hope all is well with her???
O.K., I know everybody else is loving Paulina but I am not – I know what it is: I simply don’t care for Jackee Harry’s shtick – the over-hyper-sexualized comedy shtick (in the same similar way I always hated Robin Williams’ shtick). I also really don’t like the actress who is playing Chanel. IDK how long Paulina is sticking around for on the show???
I have heard that VK may not be sticking around so I find it annoying if that is the case that they would write CIN’s story in the way they are doing it – it needs to be long-term with a payoff with the leads played by the same performers in order for it to work and be satisfying, at least for me.
I have warmed up to Isabelle Durant – I have read that she is Australian and utilizing an American accent in her performance. (Again I am never sure if what I read/hear is true or not!)
I enjoyed the Lumi scenes, it was a fun nod to the past and stirs up more trouble too.April 14, 2021 at 8:46 am #1204200132
I can totally see how Paulina and Chanel would be divisive characters. I’m surprised I haven’t a little more complaining about them actually. I like both, though Precious Way, who plays Chanel, hasn’t shown a lot of range. Still, it’s fun having a scheming golddigger around, and it helps that it feels like the writing team is at least paying attention to this story. All the Xander/Chanel so far has been really funny.
The Sami/Kristen scenes were a mixed bag for me. I am sick of Kristen, but not nearly as sick as I am of everyone just believing she’s Susan. Sami also expressed some common sense things that this storyline has been ignoring so far, like why would anyone think Brady is better off with Kristen than with Chloe? But the setup and conclusion just didn’t make sense. The Lumi scenes were a lot of fun, but the idea that Sami needed to sneak him out of the apartment, when they could have just put their clothes back on and said they fell asleep talking, seemed overly complicated. And now Sami and Kristen have made a deal where Sami will keep Kristen’s secret that she’s out of prison and pretending to be Susan and will help keep Brady and Chloe apart in exchange for not telling EJ that she suspects, with no proof, that Sami slept with Lucas? Sami should just call the police and have Kristen taken back to prison, and say she’ll give her a fighting chance with Brady by not telling him all the crap she’s been up to. I think I’d originally read that Alison Sweeney would be around for closer to a year, but I think that was before COVID delays changed the schedule and pushed Sami’s return back. Seven months seems very plausible.
I like Isabel Durant a lot. She is indeed Australian, but her Salem accent is very good. She’s done a good job of playing what the show seems to want from Claire, which is similar to the version of her from before she started trying to burn people alive.
Victoria Konefal isn’t on contract, I don’t think even a short-term one, which makes this whole storyline feel very tenuous. It’s my opinion that they should have either recast Ciara when VK was leaving before or written Ciara out in a semi-satisfying way. The amnesia story is okay (although there have been sooooo many of them in the last few years) and it’s interesting that they’re exploring Ciara and Theo in a way they never really have, but I worry that Ciara will either never recover her memories and just leave town or she will recover and reunite with Ben, but then the show will have to come up with something else to write her out. And as history has proven, this show does a bad job writing these open-ended exits.
I hadn’t read that about Suzanne Rogers asking for time off, but that makes sense to me. I assumed the show having Maggie go off to be with Summer was connected to something like that and not just them wanting to have Maggie off screen.April 14, 2021 at 9:48 am #1204200221
Isabelle Durant is Australian. That is correct.April 14, 2021 at 2:46 pm #1204200803
Was just watching Candyman with a friend. I forgot that a VERY young Vanessa Williams (ex- Valerie Grant ) was in that movie. I also remember Kevin Spirtas under the name Kevin Blair was in one of the Friday the 13th movies, can’t remember which one though.April 15, 2021 at 5:44 am #1204201779
Jackee is a talented actress but writers tend to forget that and they go for the over-the-top shenanigans.
Chanel reminds me of the soap vixens from the past who were money hungry and not ashamed of it. That just means she’ll probably be attacked in order to be redeemed. Sighs. Days is notorious for this.April 15, 2021 at 10:41 am #1204202333
Yes, Vanessa Williams was in Candyman and is in the reboot that I believe was supposed to hit theaters last spring. I don’t know what ended up happening with the movie after the pandemic set in, but it may be still being held for a theatrical release. It’s wild to think that an actor could be on a soap while also being in a hit movie, but it’s happened before.
I think Chanel has had something of a grounding effect on Paulina and let Jackee play something other than the shenanigans she started with.April 15, 2021 at 12:15 pm #1204202567
While I didn’t enjoy today’s episode much at all I did burst out laughing at Sami’s plan to have Lucas get Chloe to fall back in love with him!!!!April 16, 2021 at 7:34 am #1204203613
Just remembering that Lucas and Chloe were married makes me laugh!
The story with Kate, Jake, Gabi and Phillip has gotten pretty silly and isn’t really going anywhere. It feels a little like a high school melodrama — Jake is a popular jock, Kate is the smart girl doing his homework for him, Gabi is the popular girl who’s jealous. Phillip is involved just to annoy his mother? To pass the time? Because he thinks Gabi might get desperate and sleep with him? I wish they’d write Phillip was less pathetic. I remember back when he was kind of like a prize during the Stephanie/Melanie era, and now he’s been soundly kicked to the curb by Belle and Chloe, and sort of pushed Gabi into a lunch date by not looking at her business plan or whatever. (Astounding that the only Titan CEO who’s been sued for sexual harassment is Sonny, LOL.) It seems like the ultimate goal is to have Gabi and Jake together, but I don’t really care about that, and they’re not doing anything to make me care about it. I just want to see Gabi plotting and scheming.April 16, 2021 at 12:05 pm #1204204157
I really liked the scenes between Tripp and Allie today and that Allie is thinking about her future but factoring in Henry. Nice chemistry between Lucas and Lindsay too – but what was up with that look of disdain on Roman’s face???
O.K., someone on a chat board had speculated they thought that Jan had slipped out of the hospital (before it was official that she was out of her coma) and killed Charlie. I had a feeling that what John would see when hypnotized is Belle at Charlie’s but as we only see the coat we don’t know who is wearing it – someone had mentioned that Nicole has a similar coat too. I think there is more to it; we were told that one suspect would be eliminated each week and I think next week will be Belle’s turn…April 18, 2021 at 10:40 pm #1204208569
^^^I had that thought about Jan while watching Friday’s episode. I don’t for a moment believe that Jan didn’t already know all about Charlie when she was talking to Claire, and I’m sure the show has no problem making Jan the killer. The flashback with John seeing the red coat was like confirmation that Belle isn’t the killer. It also wouldn’t really jive with Belle’s behavior toward Sami after she was arrested. I believe we’re supposed to learn who the killer is fairly soon, so I guess we’ll see.
It was good to have Melinda Trask call Rafe out on the absolutely ridiculous process he’s been following throughout this murder investigation, but also it’s a little frustrating how dumbed down and inconsistent some of this seems. Like Melinda asking Rafe if he just believes that Tripp never entered Charlie’s apartment. Didn’t they examine the crime scene? I guess they’re just acting like there’s no difference between Rafe ignoring evidence to believe someone with whom he has a personal relationship and Rafe not going after a suspect for whom there is no actual evidence to implicate.
I liked the Allie/Tripp scenes, too, though it’s hilarious that she was just going to unshirt him in the middle of the pub! I guess Roman still just doesn’t like the idea of Allie getting involved with Tripp, even though he’s done nothing wrong and has been incredibly gracious to all the people who were treating him like dog poop for months.
