Precious Way is out and Raven Bowens is in as Chanel. Raven looks softer to me, at least in her photo…. I was starting to like PW in the role after a rocky start.June 11, 2021 at 7:26 am #1204296283
Yes, did you see a reason for the recast? I wasn’t sure if it was related to the other show that Precious Way had been cast on or if the show just decided to go a different direction. I was enjoying Precious Way. She had this charm that really worked for the character. But I look forward to seeing what Raven Bowens brings to the role.June 11, 2021 at 4:17 pm #1204296904

Michael, I have read conflicting information – that she left the show for another role; and that they decided to replace her. IDK which or maybe a mix of both?
We will find out what the new E.J. is like on Monday.June 14, 2021 at 10:49 am #1204300223
Hmm, yes, maybe a combination of the two. The DAYS filming schedule can be rigid, and while it generally works to share supporting-level performers with other soaps, I think working around a primetime or streaming production model can be much more difficult. It may be the case that Precious took the other role expecting she could do both, and the show decided that it wouldn’t work for them.June 15, 2021 at 10:55 am #1204301541
O.K., some thoughts: the writing by and large is plot-driven rather than character-driven and this causes many problems within the storytelling. The whole Gabi/Jake/Kate story is a wreck, for example. Jake was all set to leave with Kate just a few weeks ago! I’m not happy with this plot of Kate’s, she should not regress to old behavior.
My first impressions of the new E.J. are: the actor has zero charisma and is unattractive. This makes it easier for me to be 100% on Team Lumi!
I enjoy Xander, Paul Telfer is so wonderful in the role, but again it’s plot-driven what is happening with Nicole and Brady and his new job.
I loved Lucas today! Their getting caught by Marlena made me laugh, and then the nice mother/daughter talk afterwards, they are always great together.June 15, 2021 at 9:48 pm #1204302290
The show is definitely not doing a good job of writing characters. Someone like Jake is a perfect example. I kind of have an idea of who Jake is and what makes him tick, but in the shuffle of committing to Kate and then committing to Gabi and now being torn between them to some degree, he’s become more of a construct rather than a person. What Gabi and Kate are doing works for me for the most part (Kate’s faking blindness is resulting in some hilarious work from Lauren Koslow), but Jake has become a blank slate. The show has made one mistake after another with Brandon Barash. First they killed Stefan and gave his heart to Gabi, but then realizing that Gabi and Stefan were a hit, they hired Barash to play Jake, who turned out to be Stefan’s twin. They took it for granted that Gabi/Jake would have the same magic as Gabi/Stefan, and really didn’t do enough to build a foundation for Jake and Gabi together. They could have done something fun, like have Jake pretend to be Stefan or have Gabi coax him into pretending to be Stefan and retaking control of DiMera from Chad, but they played it pretty poorly, and then Gabi left. Since then, they’ve lost their sense of Jake as a character and really haven’t recovered it.
So far, I don’t love nuEJ, but I don’t dislike him. It’s only been a couple of episodes, and I’m willing to give him time to grow into the role somewhat. But there’s definitely an excitement in having EJ back on the canvas and what that could mean for a lot of characters and story options. It would have been cool to see him come into a room full of DiMeras and fold back into the family that way instead of having him in a conversation with Tony, who we didn’t even know was in town and haven’t seen in months, but I expect he’ll see Chad, Jake, Gabi, Kate, Abigail, etc. eventually over time. With Stefano gone, EJ feels like the best shot this show has at having someone for the DiMera family to center around.
The Xander stuff is actually working for me. There are ways in which the character has developed over the last few years — the fact that he’s totally cut Victor out of his life shows that he really valued being a part of the Kiriakis family and felt so betrayed that Victor continued to support Phillip, even after the embezzling was revealed — but also ways in which he’s sunken deeper into who he’s always been, jumping into petty schemes and being semi-obsessed with Nicole now that Sarah isn’t around. I also like him at Basic Black with Nicole, Chloe and Brady because there’s so much bad history with those three characters that almost any criticism of Xander is at least mildly hypocritical. Nicole tried to destroy Chloe’s face with a flesh-eating virus to keep her and Brady apart. Brady blackmailed Nicole with a recording he made of her confessing to killing Deimos. Chad was still a teenager when Brady had him shot as part of the Kiriakis/DiMera feud. These people aren’t saints. While I don’t think the writers have the patience to actually let this play out and have Xander become a valued member of the Basic Black team, I’d certainly like to see the dynamic play out further.
Also, I have to say that Billy Flynn is much more engaged and enjoyable being a supporting player in the story with Kate, Jake and Gabi than he has been in his own story with Abigail and Gwen, which leads me to believe he’s having trouble connecting with the (bad) writing.June 18, 2021 at 11:21 am #1204307206
Some of the lines on the show over the last couple of days have been really funny, mostly when they probably weren’t intended to be.
When Belle and Shawn were talking about Jan being in a coma, they said something like, “Claire’s safe, Chloe’s been rescued, but the most important thing is that we’re together.” Great to know they apparently prioritize being together over their daughter not burning to death.
I also couldn’t believe when Ben was telling Rafe about the hard time he’s having with Ciara sending him divorce papers, and Rafe said that he’d been in the same situation. This is a hilariously bad comparison. Ben’s marriage is failing because Ciara got amnesia after being kidnapped and blown up. Hope divorced Rafe because he cheated on her with Sami and then went to Italy to help Sami with Johnny when Hope needed him in Salem and THEN decided to become guardian to the baby of his psychotic ex-girlfriend who had just tried to kill Hope’s daughter. These are VERY DIFFERENT.
I also enjoyed Steve giving a top-tier bad apology to Bonnie, essentially saying I’m sorry I can’t stand the sight of your because of everything you did to my sister, and I’m sorry that you trying to act more like her only made it worse. As much as I like Bonnie, I despise this storyline with her and Justin, especially with him treating everyone like they’re committing high crimes by disliking her for all the very real reasons he should probably also dislike her.
I did think the scenes with Chanel, Paulina, Allie, Abe and Roman were pretty good. Paulina’s questions and confusions sounded very much like things I hear people say all the time about the LGBT+ issues that go beyond the L, the G, and the B.
