Some improvements I would make if I were the EP and/or headwriter of the show: I would bring back Will and Sonny (Chandler Massey and Zack Tinker) and give them adventure stories with Will as a big shot news investigator; I would give the character of Brady a rest, and then I would pair him up with a strong woman who does not need saving, can take care of herself, and won’t put up with his antics; I would give Marlena a dramatic storyline that is not melodramatic, something completely different for her, and I would definitely bring back Hattie; I would ask Eileen Davidson to do short-term visits especially as Susan since I want to see her interact with E.J.; I would of course bring Sami back and have her choose Lucas but still get into plenty of trouble; I would get rid of Rafe and Philip permanently; I would move away from melodramatic plots and work on more dramatic plots with plot twists and unexpected surprises; I would mix it up and have characters form friendships with characters they don’t usually interact with; this one is different: I would pair up Sami and Xander as a scheming ‘couple’, not romantic, just to have them work together on schemes together; I would give Maggie a storyline concerning Victor’s impending death (I don’t think John Aniston is going to be on the show very much any more); I would bring back Cady McClain as Jennifer and not Melissa Reeves (I know that one won’t happen but it’s what I would do); I would move away from all these business storylines; I would give Ben and Ciara meaningful employment – if she’s not going to be on the show she could be working outside of Salem most of the time… these are just a few ideas that have popped into my head.

I admit I haven’t been enjoying the overall storyline arcs lately ): Individual scenes are well-acted and sometimes well-written but I am not particularly excited with any of these current stories very much. Unlike GH where I want to know what will happen next, for me Days is more just the pleasure of the company of the characters and actors I have known for all these years. This of course can change on a dime – soaps can bounce back but it requires effort and imagination.

I have mixed feelings about this new storyline for Doug and Julie. On the one hand it will give them a chance to shine and for him at 95 to possibly get an Emmy nomination – but one of the things I love about Bill Hayes and the character Doug is how vital he is at 95 years of age.

Johnny ought to name his movie “Hurricane Sami Strikes Again!” (: (: (:

I am hoping they will utilize flashback Sami clips which will fill the gap of not having Ali on the show right now – and then of course for her to come back! I don’t think she will be thrilled about Johnny making a movie about her, since she has made so many mistakes in her life!!!!

I know Bill and Susan Hayes will slay their storyline but I will miss Doug’s vitality – I love seeing Bill Hayes at 96 having such vitality and still able to continue acting. Mixed feelings about the story but I know we are in for poignant moments and great acting.

I was out of town for a couple of weeks and couldn’t watch the show (or Beyond Salem) while I was away, so I’m just catching up and reading some of these posts now. (Though still about a week behind.)

Even though I have absolutely no interest in Bonnie and Justin as a couple, I’m glad they’ve done something to potentially derail the wedding and the pairing, and Calista was funny at least.

I generally agree about Gwen and Jack. Gwen had potential to be a great character before they made her Jack’s daughter and set her on the revenge plot against Abigail. And I don’t think any character has been more ruined during Ron’s tenure than Jack. I was always lukewarm on the character and really haven’t liked him since the amnesia story.

The benefit of having two weeks of episodes is that even if the storylines are bad or dumb, it at least feels like a lot is happening.

Apparently the show is revisiting the devil possession storyline this fall, and while I’m happy for Deidre Hall for potentially be getting some juicy material, I am VERY apprehensive about how this is going to go.

My least favorite thing on soaps is sci-fi storylines so I am not looking forward to it at all.

I’m shocked Ron didn’t do it sooner! He’s a huge fan of revisiting his show’s history and a nutty, campy story like that seems right up his alley.

Glad that Justin is going to defend Bonnie as her attorney.

I was very bored during today’s episode once again ): Is it just me or are these stories not very compelling???

One thing that happened was Marlena morphing into Kristen and maybe this is a way to do stuff like that without the face masks that have been so popular! Marlena possessed could just morph into anyone! Lol. When they did that special howeeen episode with the Salem stalker something was a little off and it wasn’t the same. Carlivati just isn’t a JER. He can’t do what he did and have it “work” in the same way.

The fact that Jamey Giddens is on the writing staff makes me a little more optimistic about revisiting the possession story than I’d otherwise be, but you’re right, BTN. I just don’t see current DAYS being able to pull off that kind of thing the way it did in the 90s, for a lot of reasons, including Ron. Jim Reilly was doing this story and really doing it like it was for serious, and it’s hard to imagine Ron won’t try to intentionally play it for camp. It’s very hard to be trying to do camp and actually succeed. The cast seems pumped, so maybe it’ll be great. Hopefully it’ll at least be fun.

I like a lot of your suggestions, Freeman. Brady is, at this point, a very hard character to really pair successfully. He does tend to want to try to rescue women and get involved with them that way, but the real issue is his personality. The character needs to mature somewhat, and given his age, he really should stop being so childish and entitled all the time. Why would a strong woman (who’s not insane) want to be with him? To me, his best match is probably Nicole, but no writer can put him with Nicole for long without deciding she’s going to dump him for someone else, which makes sense because he sucks. Of course I’d love to get Will and Sonny back (or just Will, though having Zach Tinker as Sonny revitalizes that dynamic), and having Queen Eileen doing occasional stints as Kristen and Susan would be great. I’m sure the show is doing whatever it can to get Sami back on screen whenever they’re able. I feel like we need a family dinner scene with Sami, Allie, Johnny, Lucas and EJ. Throw in Will and Sydney too!

One thing that has been bugging me lately is just how absent the parents on this show are. In the 90s, I’d make fun of how Hope and Bo were constantly doing things out of town for months on end, with Shawn D just being babysat by Caroline, Maggie, Julie or whoever was around. But what they’re doing now is really next level. Chloe, for absolutely no reason, lives in Salem while her son Parker, Maggie’s grandson, lives with her parents in New York. Gabi obviously talks to Arianna, but until like a week ago, she didn’t seem all that concerned with seeing her in person. Brady and Kristen were so pressed about being kept from Rachel, but now Brady barely seems to remember he has a child, let alone two children. It seems like no one on this show cares that Tate exists. Nicole mentions Holly, but the girl definitely seems to be fending for herself. We do at least see babies with their parents, because it mostly just requires the presence of a stroller or a car seat in scenes. Henry is like a plot device used to move Allie in and out of scenes.

LOL at Xander immediately calling the cops on Bonnie. I guess in Salem, it’s do unto others as your former best friend did unto you.

I cited Judi Evans for her performance on today’s episode – this is why I have always loved Judi in all of her roles – when she has great material she delivers superb performances! For me that was the only part of the show that I enjoyed ):

I most certainly did not like it when Re-Ron revisited classic stories on OLTL and I don’t have the faith that this one will be good.

I wish they would lighten up EJ. He is robotic all the time!

I haven’t been happy with Ron’s writing on Days lately and not looking forward to a sci-fi story – I wanted Marlena to have a DRAMATIC story, not a MELODDRAMATIC story!

Yes, I am not liking this version of E.J. Dan is fine but he’s not James Scott, the real E.J. One of the biggest things they could do is have E.J. decide to change his hair – it is not becoming on Dan, his natural hair would go a long way to improving his E.J. (seems superficial but I do think this is true).

I was going to make a similar comment about EJ. I’ve just gotten through last Friday’s episode, and he’s generally acting like a very rigid lunatic. To my mind, Dan is doing a good job of playing what he’s being given and honestly he seems to be balancing it out a little more than what the dialogue is giving him. The writing team seems to have a poor grasp on the character, which is a shame considering all that James Scott did to actually infuse a character throughline into EJ over the course of the eight or so writing regimes that wrote during his tenure. Part of what made EJ dangerous was that his charm and charisma made him really likeable and so when he would be ruthless, it was a bit of a shock, even if you knew to expect it. There was also a vulnerability that seems gone, similar to what we see from Stacy Haiduk’s Kristen most of the time. Also, EJ and Chad fighting because both of them want their kids to take over the company eventually is, frankly, disgusting. It’s also driving me crazy that the writing continuously makes it seem like Sami was dependent on EJ for money, which is blatantly false. She successfully pilfered millions and millions of dollars from the DiMera family, and most of the reserves they have are because Sami gave half the money to Belle, and Belle gave it back to them.

Hooray! Chandler Massey as Will has made a visit to the mother show!!!! Now BRING WILL HOME to Salem!!! I love nuSonny – so with or without Sonny, all I want is my Will back!!!!

Bill and Susan are slaying it as Doug and Julie…
