The best and worst of Days in 2021!

On the plus side is the incredible cast! They give their all even when the material isn’t great.

Hurricane Sami has been great in all of her stories in 2021.

The intensity of the rape storyline and those scenes of the actual rape were stunning.

Even though I didn’t like the storyline the acting in the murder of Charlie Dale was terrific.

Loved the episode where Eric and Nicole end their marriage. Kudos to Greg and Arianne.

Judi Evans stand-alone episode where Bonnie recounts what really happened years ago was stellar.

Paul Telfer’s Xander is always so much fun to watch.

Long-term couples Doug and Julie and Victor and Maggie are such a delight. Thank goodness we have Suzanne Rogers as Maggie back on the show!

Mike Manning was extraordinary as Charlie Dale.

Unfortunately every time I think of something good to say it’s always more about the performers and not the storylines. I haven’t liked the overall storyline arcs but have loved individual scenes and episodes.

I hate the possession storyline with every fiber of my being. Just the worst.

I hated that Jan killed Charlie. The scenes were terrific, so well done but what a waste of a character and what a stupid ending to the storyline.

Ciara’s amnesia started out well but then deteriorated as she became a totally annoying character for months on end.

I simply can’t stand the character of Philip Kiriakis. All that Junior High stuff with him, Chloe and Brady – blech!

The absolutely stupid decision to have Lucas be the one who kidnapped Sami – just awful!

Kristen always getting away with her crimes – who does she think she is, Peter August? BLECH! (btw, I love Stacey’s Susan but can’t stand her as Kristen).

I am in the minority but I truly dislike this version of E.J.

I am forgetting too much but for me the year was marred by Ron Carlivati’s terrible overall storyline arcs but saved by the energetic cast who give their all to whatever they are given to do.

LOL, sorry Freeman, but your inclination that the possession story ending was too good to be true was spot on! I thought the exorcism would be the end, but looking back on some of the things performers have said about the story, I guess it makes sense that it would be ongoing. On the bright side, Greg Vaughan is back at DAYS long term.

The revolving door on this show moves pretty fast. Sami and Lucas have already left town after deciding to get back together on New Year’s Eve, and now Jack and Jennifer have decided to resuscitate a newspaper in Boston and will be gone as well. Ultimately, I think this is a good move, especially if Jennifer wouldn’t be around full-time anyway. Almost everything that’s been written for Jack since his last return to the show has been bad — the amnesia and subsequent jackassery as mayor and hooking up with Eve, the having slept with Kate during the time jump, all this nonsense with Gwen, and especially what a bad father he’s been to JJ and Abigail. The one bright spot was his friendship with Xander, but that kind of got flushed with all the Gwen stuff.

I haven’t been loving this story so far, but now that Eric is back in the priesthood and Nicole’s ties with EJ seem to be cut, I’m hopeful that the Nicole/Rafe/Ava story gets more interesting. Unfortunately, Rafe seems to be the best option for Nicole at the moment, and if Ava can go after her (but not in the insane ways she’s gone after Kayla in the past) and make Nicole into more of a heroine, I think it could be good for the character.

While some of the couples on DAYS are tried and true and there are some newer ones who are obviously suited, the show has thrown a few pairings out and seems to have stuck with them for no reason. I’m especially thinking about Ava and Rafe. Why is Rafe still with Ava? He thinks she killed a former mob employee of hers in his kitchen, he thinks that she beheaded a teddy bear out of jealousy (she did), and he takes very opportunity he can to get close to Nicole, including having sex with her in her office and making out with her in the town square. Does he just really like the cooking? The Phillip/Chloe pairing was also pretty puzzling. Chloe had shown no interest in being with Phillip, despite his many pleas and being played by two different actors, until about 10 seconds before Brady became available. But those two at least have history.

I feel bad for Kate. She really tried to navigate the Phillip situation to help him as best she could without punishing Brady and even came clean to Roman about it, and then this Lucas kidnapping situation. Chad has been a bad brother and a bad husband (and I suspect a bad CEO) for quite some time, but now he’s even being a bad surrogate son to Kate by putting her in this position. It’s also pretty eyerolling every time Chad or someone refers to everything EJ has done to him, as if EJ has put him through some horrible ordeal. I don’t think Chad even remembers that the reason he wasn’t CEO before were because of his tabloid exploits with Gwen, and were it not for EJ, Jake would still be running the company and Gabi would have thrown him out of the mansion by now. The level of entitlement is staggering.

Anyway, I’m very excited for Paulina and EJ throwing this reception for Chanel and Johnny and for Xander and Abigail working together to find Sarah! Based on the way stories are trending, I think the show will keep the good momentum from the second half of 2021.

That was a shocker at the end of Days! The devil causing chaos with Chanel

Wow, these last few episodes have been WILD with the developments in the Chanel/Johnny/Allie/Tripp storyline. I didn’t expect JoDevil (as the internet is calling him, though I don’t think it really works as well as MarDevil) to wreak this much havoc this quickly, but I love it. I also didn’t think the show would really go there with Allie and Chanel, despite all the teasing, but here we are. Can’t wait to see what happens next there.

I’m also looking forward to EJ’s hearing and seeing how that plays out. The scenes with EJ and Belle yesterday were good, and I’m eager to see how she comes to represent him in the case considering how many objections she had. With Phillip now off screen, Ava stepping up her scheming where Nicole and Rafe are concerned, and Xander working with Abigail to find Sarah, pretty much all of the dud storylines from the last quarter of 2021 are on the uptick. Even the Jake/Gabi story will be improved if Victor tricks them into somehow getting him a seat on the DiMera board without giving them the CEO position at Titan, but that may not be happening.

The timeline of EJ’s trial is hilariously insane. Belle signs on as his lawyer like five minutes before the proceedings are to begin. When they start with what’s intended to be jury selection, EJ immediately stands and waives his rights to a jury trial (I guess he had to have a plan, but still). Everyone is stunned, and Belle asks to adjourn for the day to get caught up, but the judge says no no, WE’RE STARTING RIGHT NOW.

Chad is such a piece of trash. Even in his decision to maybe do the right thing and admit the financial evidence against EJ was planted, he can’t even admit this to Abigail (making it seem unlikely he’ll admit it in court). It still kills me that chad is crying about being marginalized, when if it weren’t for EJ, Chad would be working nowhere as a result of his tabloid exploits with his wife’s sister. Jake would still be running DiMera, Gabi would surely have thrown him out of the mansion by now, and he would have likely had to move with Abigail and the kids into the Horton house with Doug and Julie (and Jack and Gwen and Xander).

With the exception of Allie and Chanel I have been completely bored out of my mind by Days this past week. I just don’t care for any of these storylines. I do not like throwing characters under the bus and sacrificing them to prop up E.J.! I really do not like Ron Carlivati’s writing. I am watching the show as I write this and I love the actors – Suzanne Rogers is always a pleasure to watch – but the writing just is terrible. They have clearly decided that camp and comedy will keep them on the air longer, maybe so, but for me I am really tired of it.

RC specializes in: rape stories, changing paternities or maternities, infidelity stories and turning folks into psychos to prop up bad guys.

I came across a clip of OLTL’s Destiny finding out her brother was her dad. This is where RC repeated himself, with the Lani story.

I know I’m in the minority, but I think the show’s been mostly good. There’s been a good amount of camp and comedy, but they’ve mixed in some more heartfelt moments and story beats. The show seems like it’s much better now than it was in the spring and summer of 2021.

(Though I agree with a lot of the comments about RC.)

It’s mostly just me disliking Ron’s writing and not liking sci-fi/horror type stories on soaps though. I still watch because I love the actors!

Have the ratings gone up or down or stayed the same? I haven’t been following the ratings, especially since I don’t think they count all the different ways in which people can watch?

I haven’t checked all that often, but my impression is that ratings have been more or less the same at DAYS, solidly in last place among the four remaining soaps. But yes, I think those ratings may be counting for less and less. Since Peacock has been expending money to create exclusive DAYS content for the app, I have to assume that viewership on that platform is pretty decent. I’ve been watching on Peacock exclusively since Beyond Salem.

There are still a number of things on this show that make absolutely no sense, though, beyond the far-fetched and fantastical. The show should either stop attempting to write corporate stories or get someone to write them in a way that can be logical and engaging. Gabi and Jake saying that Johnny has DiMera shares but was too young to vote them at the last meeting is hard to believe. That meeting was like six months ago. Does Sydney also have shares she can’t vote, and if so, would that give Sami some voting control? They’re not even using the nonsense they write in an interesting way. There’s a conflation between what is the board and what is the shareholders and who has the power to do what. My feeling is that Jake is just a character that inspires bad writing. They’re writing things that don’t make sense to try to give him a story, which means it’s time to shuffle him off the canvas. They also were doing this with Kristen.

Also, I don’t see why it isn’t an issue for the prosecution that those financial records they consider to be the smoking gun just showed up, courtesy of Chad, after the police had already checked through the DiMera computers for evidence. This makes it seem more than anything like Chad either had Sami kidnapped himself or is framing EJ for it. Maybe that’ll come up? It would be interesting to see Chad get arrested and then flip on Lucas. I don’t want Lucas to go to jail or anything, but I do want him to get busted.

RC’s distaste for the Rafe character really resulted him in writing a dream sequence where Tamara Braun had to fight a bear. Sighs..

Thank goodness that was just a dream. People saw the photos and thought that the Devil might have brought Duke to life, which would have been too far. The show also needs to take it easy with the false identities: you can’t have Devil Johnny turning into EJ and Ava wearing a mask to look like Sarah back-to-back episodes. It’s too much!

The show is making Rafe such a chump. He thinks Ava decapitated that bear, and he seems pretty convinced she’s having him set up at work, but he’s still living with her, sharing a bed with her, having morning sex with her, etc.

I have to hand it to the DAYS cast (and directors) for doing such a good job in the scenes where characters are pretending to be other characters. Martha Madison, Linsey Godfrey and Dan Feuerriegel all come to mind as having been spot on when Jan was pretending to be Belle, Ava and Gwen were pretending to be Sarah, and Devil Johnny was pretending to be EJ.
