Yeah, I am very curious to find out what’s going on there. It seems incredibly odd that none of the other shows would submit, and it’s hard to believe that’s an oversight. Between this and my inability to find anything on rules or deadlines for the Daytime Emmys, this awards season is really confounding me!
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 13, 2023 at 8:41 am #1205241125Someone was saying on Twitter that none of the other soaps submitted for the WGA award, but Jamey Giddens, formerly of Daytime Confidential and now on the DAYS writing team, said that’s not true. Curiouser and curiouser. According to Soap Opera News, the submitted episode dates were April 19, April 20, and May 4. April 20 was the day that Chad and Jackie Cox showed up to torpedo Craig and Leo’s wedding, so the submission didn’t include the episode that Abigail exposes all of Gwen’s treachery to Xander and everyone.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 16, 2023 at 8:44 am #1205247826Do you think the show’s directors watch back scenes they shot for Friday’s episode and thought, “Chad yelling at Sonny for half an hour because Alex turned of Stephanie’s phone? SIGN ME UP!” This was so off-putting. I think I’m less a fan of Chad as a character than probably a lot of the audience, but I think he’s proven himself to generally be a so-so friend, a bad brother, and a terrible boyfriend and husband. The story with Chad, Alex and Stephanie is not my favorite. It reminds me of the story in 2021 with Chloe, Brady and Phillip. Brady was unquestionably trying to come between Phillip and Chloe, all while trying to gaslight Phillip and pretending he was doing nothing, but clearly the show meant for us to root for Brady and Chloe. This is a much lower octane version of that, but we, the audience, know that Chad has feelings for Stephanie and wants to explore a relationship with her, so there’s no way to read his behavior as being as innocent as Stephanie claims. Alex is right to want to establish better boundaries, and Stephanie is behaving a little more like Nicole, being with Alex but also seemingly trying to keep Chad on the hook as a backup option. It’s impossible to believe that either Stephanie or Chad can actually believe that their friendship is as innocent as they claim. Of course, Alex shutting off Stephanie’s phone was wrong and, considering the consequences, I totally get Stephanie’s response. What doesn’t really make sense is that: 1. Steve had Chad call Stephanie in the first place and never tried calling himself, and 2. Not one person tried to reach Stephanie by calling Alex. All this to say that watching scene after scene of Chad shouting about this to anyone would have been irritating and just too much, and having the target of that tirade be Sonny is just very misplaced, especially since if Chad were leaning on his BFF Sonny when he left sad and lonely instead of always seeking out Stephanie, we wouldn’t be in a situation where Alex felt the need to silence Chad’s calls (and also maybe not in a situation where Leo is the only friend Sonny has seemed to have for the last couple of months).
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 17, 2023 at 10:11 am #1205249484Surprisingly, I was kind of gutted by the Sonny/Leo scenes. I’ve really been enjoying them together, and Sonny seemed as hurt by Leo’s betrayal and Leo was by losing Sonny’s friendship. Will overhearing all that from Leo and Sloan and then running to tell Sonny about it reminded me of classic Sami, so that was fun. I know Chandler hasn’t wanted to be back on full time, but if they could convince him to sign on with a good stories and good guarantees, I would love to see them writing Will more like Sami. Let him make a mess of his life and have a lot more off and on with Sonny.
I’m glad Bonnie and Justin suggested Sarah maybe take a minute before rushing to divorce Xander. I love Sarah, but seems crazy to me that this would be an instant dealbreaker for her. You can’t promise “for better or for worse” with someone who’s done the things that Xander has and then flee at the first sign of criminal behavior. I know she’s having trouble getting past Susan’s death, but that’s much more on Ava, EJ and Susan herself than it is on him. In any event, the sooner we no longer have to talk about Bonnie being kidnapped and traumatized, the better.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 17, 2023 at 2:19 pm #1205249812The Alex/Stephine/Chad triangle is not working. Alex need to be the town playboy a year or so before putting him into a love story. And it is BS that Chad claims he does not know he gaslighting Alex.
Post the heaven storyline Kate needs to be determine to “live” and takes back over CEO of Titan and have them bring back Chelesa with her own fashion design have Chelesa and Chad fall for each other.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 18, 2023 at 9:43 am #1205250783Yeah, it was silly to keep telling us what a player Alex is but have him fall for Stephanie a few weeks after showing up. Unfortunately, most of current soap writing really doesn’t have the patience for this kind of thing where they’d actually establish Alex as a player on canvas before the love story they wanted to move him into eventually. That might have also given the show time to realize how much of the audience is put off by Alex and Stephanie being essentially cousins, even if not technically by blood. Also, I like Stephanie, but I do not need to see her crying for days on end about Kayla as the only aspect of that storyline that we’re actually seeing on a regular basis. I’m fine with knowing that people are at the hospital even if we don’t see them, but we need to be keeping with this story in a more tangible way. It would be lovely to see people actually interacting with Marlena, or maybe just outside her room talking about her.
I like the Kate suggestion. It would be cool if she either took over as CEO of Titan or if she became basically what Victor is now, not running things day-to-day but being the head person in charge who can hire and fire CEOs, etc.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 18, 2023 at 7:39 pm #1205251967Like todays episode for the most part. I if they going to do Who Dun it Mystery with someone trying to kill Kirsten to get her a rest for a little bit.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 19, 2023 at 9:22 am #1205253544This does feel like the setup for a murder mystery. So far there have been two aggressors (Steve and Chloe) and two people who intervened but were clear that they also despise her right now (Johnny and Stefan), and that barely scratches the surface of the number of people who have motive to harm her based on the orchid and brainwashing stuff, not to mention all the other things she’s done to people and what looks like a kidnapping attempt in progress now.
The John/Brady scenes and Ali/Johnny scenes are more the kind of thing I’ve been looking for with this story.
Is Steve’s bug still recording? Seems like he could get a lot of valuable info with that, and probably a better confession from Kristen as well.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 20, 2023 at 9:30 am #1205255089Martha Madison shows up and is immediately heartbreaking. It always gets me when a character is dying, and a loved one is talking to them about future plans they can have together, even though they both know it won’t happen. Even knowing that the character is not leaving the show and so there is some twist to keep Marlena around, I don’t see how you watch this play out and not feel moved by it.
Can’t wait to see today’s episode!
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 24, 2023 at 8:12 am #1205262854The last couple of episodes have been very strong. The writing of them is generally very good (my one hang-up is that the need to write Will back out of the show with this thing about him needing to go to New Zealand for his movie just feels a little clunky included with the rest of this material), and I like that these episodes have been a little longer, and scenes have had more time to develop and breathe. I loved how dynamic Friday’s episode was, with interesting developments on a few fronts, and then pulling the focus in to grieving Marlena on yesterday’s episode. The acting performances across the board have been wonderful. I’m really impressed with Drake Hogestyn, whose John seems at once inconsolable and also standing strong for his children. Greg Vaughan and Martha Madison were also incredible and heartbreaking.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 26, 2023 at 8:38 am #1205268479I find it rather negligent and incredibly rude that no one has even mentioned Carrie following the deaths of her mother-in-law/stepmother Kate, her aunt Kayla, and the woman who raised her, Marlena. I’m not crazy, so I understand that all these people can’t just magically show up, but no one talked about calling her? No calls from her to John or Roman? There’s no good reason for it.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 28, 2023 at 7:26 pm #1205273066And then you have Tripp referring to Roman as “Uncle Roman.”
Meanwhile we can’t get Brady calling Marlena “Mom” except once in a blue moon!
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 31, 2023 at 8:17 am #1205275866I really have not been one to defend Gwen, but man is Jack a terrible father. While obviously I wouldn’t expect him to beam with pride at the thought of his daughter being involved with a high-profile kidnapping, trying to make decisions for her and withholding his affections as ransom is just gross behavior. Not to mention that, as far as I am aware, the police to seem to have much to go on as far as charging Gwen, and Jack wants her to go incriminate herself for the sake of implicating Xander, who is his friend. I’ve never been a big fan of Jack, and under Ron’s writing regime he’s just been awful — to Jennifer, JJ, Abigail AND Gwen. But getting Gwen out of the Horton house and out of the Spectator is a good thing, so I hope that sticks. It looked like Gwen was wielding a lot of power over what happened with the paper, which is very silly considering she had only just started there a couple of months ago. Since it appears she will continue to be around, I’d like to see her just doing something different with someone new.
Glad that Bonnie wasn’t in yesterday’s episode so I didn’t have to look at this woman who kidnapped Adrienne and stashed her in Statesville for months while Justin and Sarah talk about how unforgivable Xander’s crimes are. When Leo showed up at Xander’s room, it looked like Xander hadn’t showered in days, but that wouldn’t have stopped me from accepting his fake hookup offer either. Those scenes were fun.
I hope we get back to the afterlife stuff with Marlena and the other women soon!
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 1, 2023 at 9:01 am #1205279448Does anybody know if Alison Sweeney is eligible for the Guest Performer Emmy? I have never understood the criteria for eligibility for that category – I still don’t get how Robert Gossett was eligible last year when he was a regular on the show, for example… I hope she is and I hope she submits the non-wedding to Lucas episode and the farewell to E.J. scene.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 2, 2023 at 8:44 am #1205280801It seems like the bottom line with the guest category is that the performer, show, and awards committee all just have to agree that that’s where the performer belongs. They’ve clarified that the performer can be either returning or newly cast. The definition given for a guest performer in the rules is: “a performance in a limited role with a definitive beginning and end to the story arc.” But that doesn’t really fit some of the performances that have been nominated there over the past couple of years. I’m confident Ali Sweeney would be eligible this year, unless she feels she’s too high profile to compete there.
After yesterday’s episode, I imagine we’re supposed to be rooting for Chad and Stephanie, but man do I not like this pairing. For one thing, Chad is such an annoying jackass most of the time. He works well in scenes with people who either make him a nicer, more likeable character (Sonny and Will usually, Abigail when things were good with them) or people with whom he has no foothold to act superior because they don’t take his crap (Kate, sometimes EJ). Where he does not work is with characters who reinforce his personality or inspire him to act like even more of a jerk, and Stephanie has done both. Stephanie should at least acknowledge to Alex that he was right, she and Chad apparently did just want to hook up all that time and so his feeling threatened was entirely justified. Shutting off the phone is a different matter, but that was, in part, the result of her and Chad’s dishonesty. I’m sure the story will have its swings, but the thought that Stephanie was just waiting to jump Chad’s bones kind of grosses me out, and her saying that she was forced to give Alex a chance because Chad wasn’t ready was rather unsettling.
I don’t love Xander and Gwen rekindling their relationship either, but with everything that’s happened, I can’t really keeping rooting for Xander and Sarah to be together. The dialogue in the episode did a good job of explaining why Xander can’t and shouldn’t keep waiting around for Sarah to forgive him and take him back again. While I wouldn’t expect her to be cool with him kidnapping someone, there’s a lot of space between condoning his actions and ending their marriage, and Sarah took a flying leap over all of that to go to divorce. Xander is morally challenged at times, but he’s also very lovable, and should be with someone who can get on his level and just love him back. It also feels like the show has bent over backwards to put Xander in bad positions to push him into a lot of the bad things he’s done.
