Ali Sweeney’s visit was great from start to finish. Her performances were stellar. It’s difficult to imagine the show without her.
Ciara is a force to be reckoned with! The writers were smart to move the character in a new direction. Perhaps she will pick up the slack now that Sami is gone. She will pair well with Tripp.
Bad Boozy Brady is really being “mean, mean, mean,” but I’m loving every minute of it. He was such a jerk with Sonny. And then when Paul walked in and Brady sat there with that smirk watching them argue. I loved how Paul said, “Thanks for throwing me under the bus, bro.”
But then Eve put him in his place and shot down his “big reveal” of her alleged past. I also liked Eve’s scenes with Gabi. It helps to balance her “Queen of Mean” approach to everyone in the mansion. Her behavior with Brady is justifiable, but Maggie? Yet it’s ok, because I love when Maggie gets indignant. By the way, I too loved the references to Chelsea and Blair.
I never thought I would go for the amnesia, but the Will/Sonny/Paul story is fascinating. It’s crazy that Will is moving into the mansion. Shouldn’t they be starting with, say, a dinner date?
I think Days has an advantage over GH in that they have a stronger core of established families and friendships. And the writers are certainly making the most of that history and those connections. Wow!December 18, 2017 at 10:04 am #1202443343
Yes, Will moving into the Kiriakis mansion is nuts, especially considering the turf war that happening between Eve and Brady and Victor. I guess Marlena’s penthouse isn’t all that huge and the idea of a mansion would allow for more quiet time potentially, but he’d have been better off moving into the DiMera mansion with his BFF Chad, cousin Abigail, and grandmother Kate (for as long as she sticks around).
I was asking myself why I’m loving the story with Will still having amnesia more than I enjoyed Jason’s — pardon me, Drew’s — on GH a few years ago. I certainly more a fan of Chandler Massey than of Billy Miller, though both are great actors. The strong families and friendships is part of it for sure, or at least plays into it. But GH I think played the story largely as a suspense tale, where the audience was just waiting, first for everyone to learn that Jake Doe was Jason and then for Jason to get his memories back. The wait was frustrating and annoying in many ways because the things that were happening in the interim were frustrating and annoying. DAYS is writing Will as he exists, without his memories, as a character unto himself. We’re not waiting to him to get his memory back so we can get on with the rest of the story or whatever is to happen. They are using this Will to tell stories about who he is and what he wants, and to compare the ways he relates to people now to the ways he related to them before. The Jason amnesia story was built on a foundation of anticipation, and Will’s is built on a foundation of character.
I can’t wait to see what happens today with JJ or with Kate and Chad. I feel so bad for Kate. There’s a maddening level of hypocrisy in the conversation between Steve and Kate, where he is whining that Tripp and Kayla deserve no negative consequences for their respective illegal or unorthodox actions but Kate deserves to be raked over the coals. I feel like it’s a fundamental rule of soap scheming that if you do something bad, and someone blackmails you about it to keep something bad that they did a secret, you accept, at least on a moral level, that that’s basically fair. Steve’s righteous indignation with Kate just seems wrong to me, but then if Steve believes the characterization he painted of evil Kate manipulating a vulnerable boy with autism into doing something she knew was dangerous and illegal, I could see that fueling his fury. I know people are concerned about Theo, but the list of people who care about Theo is long, and you’d have to go pretty far down before you get to Steve or Kayla honestly. Kate loves him like a grandson, and I think it just bugs me that so few people give any acknowledgement of that.December 19, 2017 at 4:26 am #1202444166
I have read that Days was the only show to increase viewers last week (:
Steve is a character who has always been insufferable for me. He has one set of standards for himself and the ones he loves and everyone else.
I am absolutely loving Victoria Konefal’s Ciara! (: and I am loving the dynamic she has with Claire, who I couldn’t stand until very recently. The writing, the acting and the chemistry between the two actresses is just right and if the writing stays strong I am looking forward to what comes next between these characters.
There were so many guest/limited performers on Days this past year: Alison Sweeney, Eileen Davidson, Charles Shaugnessy, Morgan Fairchild, Robert Scott Wilson, Paul Telfer, Meredith Scott Wilson, Jennifer Landon, I can’t remember the name of the actress who played the woman from prison who was posing as the maid at the mansion, Tamara Braun ended her short-term stint, James Read… who else?
I am missing Sami again ):December 19, 2017 at 9:13 am #1202444404
The show’s had a crazy number of guest stars and brief returns. Let’s see: Christie Clark, Leann Hunley and Austin Peck in the search for Stefano story; William Utay and John Enos in the Memphis story; Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins as Sheila; Aaron Spears and Patrika Darbo, two of the several actors who I believe appeared on DAYS and another soap in the same day; Robb Deringer, who played opposite Jennifer Landon; Martha Madison and Brandon Beemer, who I think are just making brief returns currently; and others I’m sure I’m forgetting. The show has changed so much over the course of the year and had a bunch of storylines. To think, when this year started, Hope was in prison, Adrienne was trying to wrap her mind around the idea that she had breast cancer, there were like six teenagers living or hanging out in that apartment all the time, a bunch of characters were in Prague trying to prove Stefano was alive, three families were fighting over that dumb tech device, Nicole was with Deimos . . . what an eventful 2017 it’s been!
That was an emotionally rough episode yesterday, which most characters being sort of lifted by the JJ verdict and then brought down again by the bad news about Theo, not to mention watching Chad struggle with knowing Kate was lying about having a part in sending Theo to the warehouse, which eventually led to him being shot. I think literally the only person happy at the end of the episode was Steve, who wasn’t letting the Theo news bring him down after “neutralizing” Kate and bringing Kayla and Tripp closer together. I don’t know if I’ve ever really seen Kate the way she was toward the end, after having been exposed, not really angry or defiant or trying to defend herself, mostly just sad. It would be very satisfying if she ultimately seeks some kind of revenge against Steve.
The scenes with Abe and Theo were, I thought, really good. For one, you kind of needed something to balance Abe’s behavior at the police station, and this worked perfectly, but also the writing was just really effective. It really got to emotionally, but it wasn’t melodramatic or weepy. The writers also did a very good job with the scenes between Hope and Ciara, in threading the needle of having there be a good amount of anger and scolding but also a strong and clear undercurrent of love.December 19, 2017 at 7:58 pm #1202444879
I was very disappointed as a member of “Team Eve” at the bad day Eve had during today’s episode ): Gabi choosing Kate and esp. the twist ending where the fight she overheard between Brady and Victor was all a ruse to trap her in. ): I want Eve to win, not Brady and/or Victor.
Deidre Hall and Chandler Massey have such enormous chemistry together. Their bond is so beautiful as grandma Marlena and grandson Will (:December 20, 2017 at 10:43 am #1202445373
yowzers! Casey Moss proves yet again why he deserves the Emmy award for his work in 2017. I was so surprised by today’s exceptionally well-written, well-directed and superbly acted (by Moss) episode. I love the black & white photography in the flashbacks (did they refilm all these scenes or did they just take the color out of scenes from the past? I thought maybe it is a mix of the two?). I am watching the show and in genuine suspense: is J.J. going to commit suicide? Would they really go there? IDK.
They have done these stand-alone episodes before – Jennifer’s addiction episode comes to mind. Guiding Light did them once a month for several years. Y&R has had Emmy success with theirs. I wasn’t expecting this episode at all and it really is special.December 22, 2017 at 11:18 am #1202446926
I was in awe of the JJ-focused episode, which was really well done. I wondered as well if some of the flashbacks were genuine and others newly created or if all of them had been recently filmed or refilmed. In some cases, like the scene after Jack’s death with Jennifer, Abigail and JJ in their living room, where the dialogue sounded so familiar but the scene couldn’t have been from before because it had Marci Miller. The police related scenes with Hope and Abe especially seemed like actual flashbacks, like I remember them from before, but memory is a tricky thing. Anyway, I’m not a huge fan of the hyper-focused episode concept when it deals so heavily with one person — while some like Jennifer’s addiction episode, Hope’s making a degree of peace with having shot Stefano, and especially the horror-style episode where Abigail, Chad and JJ wait for Ben to show up are excellent, others like the backstory of Aiden being alive and escaping his captivity are a real slog. They go against the nature of soaps, with focus shifting from ensemble to individual and from a web of connecting stories to a single point of plot resolution. But in this case, I thought it was great and really enjoyed it.
And thank goodness for the adorable Arianna scenes and the fun adolescent squabbling in yesterday’s episode, because oh man did I need a little balance from the very sad, very effecting scenes with JJ/Gabi and Abe/Theo. It was a very strong episode, though I like to see a little more focus on the Hortons gathering and decorating the tree. Like I would enjoy an episode that is largely that with one other major story happening. It’s cool because, in addition to the holiday traditions, you get a chance to see characters who aren’t often in the same room, especially when it doesn’t center on someone’s wedding or something, having a chance to interact. I missed having that, though maybe there’s more coming up. It would be great to have a scene with Eli and Will comparing their experiences this year coming into a huge family that they either don’t know or can’t remember.December 25, 2017 at 11:38 am #1202448343
I had a strong feeling that Theo would wake up on today’s episode. It was really nice to see Abe forgive J.J. beforehand. I hadn’t been liking Abe very much lately. I was surprised there was an episode to watch on Christmas day (Y&R also had a new episode today).
It seems like a new chapter is open to begin. The show has been on such a high for the best 4 months but I have the feeling that they are going to go off into stories I won’t care as much about (and characters I don’t care as much about). We’ll see… We also have some returns and at least one new character being introduced very soon too. Time will tell…December 26, 2017 at 12:47 pm #1202449147
I too loved the JJ-focused episode last Wednesday. When I started watching it a few nights ago, I convinced myself that I really was not in the mood. However, it didn’t take long before I was completely absorbed. The flashbacks were excellent. Kudos to the writers, directors, and, of course, Casey Moss.
Now that Abe has forgiven JJ, Theo has awakened, and Sami has departed, the show does seem to be at a crossroads. The overall canvas of characters and stories is good, and so is the outlook. The show has been on a high that will be challenging to maintain, but the writers are moving the show along at a brisk pace, with virtually no filler or loose plot threads.
It is nice that the show aired on Christmas. The episode was appropriately schmaltzy. That is far more likely to attract lapsed viewers than a random repeat.December 26, 2017 at 2:42 pm #1202449242
Moss was so good!December 29, 2017 at 3:39 pm #1202451408
I felt like the general emotional toll of the week or two leading up to Christmas was proper payment for a few happy episodes and a Christmas ‘miracle’ with Abe forgiving JJ just before Theo came out of his coma. I’m a couple of episodes behind still, so I’m hoping nothing drastic or awful happened in the meanwhile, but I’ll say I was pretty surprised Theo came out of the coma at all because of the strong rumors that Kyler Pettis was leaving the show. This might have been DAYS making good PR use of their ridiculously long lag time between taping and airing, letting the rumor hang around long enough for people to assume it’s true once the character found himself in mortal danger. Or maybe they just got lucky.
Anyway, I always enjoy seeing the holiday episodes, with the hanging of the ornaments on the Horton family tree and the reading of the Christmas story with an appearance by Santa for the sick kids at the hospital. Those are two great traditions, and I’m so glad they honor them every year. I was also a big fan of all the loving and forgiving that was happening over the last few days: Abe forgiving JJ; Theo forgiving JJ; Theo forgiving Kate; Theo and Kate loving each other; Andre loving Kate; Andre and Abigail loving each other; JJ’s really sweet words to Jennifer; everything with Jennifer and Eric.
It feels like the show is going into love story mode now, with Will and Sonny getting closer again, the developing relationship between Kate and Andre (I’m still hoping they throw in Roman and make it a triangle), the quadrangle with JJ/Gabi/Eli/Lani, and the exciting feud between Claire and Ciara for Theo’s affections with Tripp looking like a potential consolation prize. The Claire/Ciara scenes reminded me of 90s Carrie and Sami feuding with one another, and I’m looking forward to it more than I have a story for the teens in quite a while.
Tyler Christopher will soon be debuting, and I think as of me posting this Louise Sorel has already aired. Leann Hunley will be starting a guest stint next week, and that should all be pretty exciting. That and the story with Eve and Brady, as well as the continuing story with DiMera, should keep things somewhat balanced. I do hope, though, that characters like Marlena and Hope continue to have a strong presence.
Oh, also, I love the redo of the Kiriakis living room. Not only do I find it aesthetically pleasing, but it’s nice to distinguish it a little more from the DiMera mansion, and I also liked that there was an episode or two where we saw things in progress, instead all that work being miraculously done in the time it takes a character to get home from the hospital or the Brady Pub.December 29, 2017 at 4:04 pm #1202451419
I was relieved to see Will and Sonny (and Paul) on today’s episode; they had been absent all week. Will sure has the hots for Paul, LOL! (; I did, however, feel bad for Sonny when he got home and realized that Will wasn’t there.
I can’t quite remember Vivian’s relationships to various characters. I remember that she hated Carly Manning but Carly isn’t on the show anymore. I assume she hates Kate and Andre? I didn’t watch on a daily basis and can’t remember…
Brady’s kissing Eve was great! I have been certain they will get together, only for Teresa to return…
Did Gabi only promise that she would consider Eve’s offer? Eve acted like it was a done deal but I thought Gabi was saying she would think about it…
I have been adjusting to the end of Sami’s visit and have been missing her terribly. I knew it was short-term but she was such a hoot!
Happy New Year! (:January 1, 2018 at 9:38 am #1202452898
I made a post on 12/29 and it still says “Awaiting approval from the moderator.” How do I speed up that process? I want to participate on the board and I seem to not be able to do that.January 1, 2018 at 9:39 am #1202452900
Vivian’s return today was a missed opportunity on some levels. First, it should be mentioned that the spoilers said that a new couple would make an appearance, so I thought Tyler Christopher would be with Louise Sorel, but he was not (it was probably cheaper to not pay him for the episode). For the record, Vivian’s character is a little troubled because for her main stint on the show in the late 90s, she shifted from villainess to comic relief and was actually friends with most of the people in Salem for some years. In fact, if she was doing something devilish, it was generally because she was roped into it (helping Stefano and Kristen with various plots).
When she left Salem, it was bittersweet. She had formed a positive relationship with her nephew, and helped Victor get out of the rehab clinic while Kate was enamored with Nicholas. When she returned in 2009, she went back to being a villain, but a brainless one. They really ignored her history. Even if they wanted to make Vivian a villain again, she is supposed to be smart. I remember her telling Ivan that Sami should “Think Ophelia,” an obvious reference to Othello. Ivan’s response was, “I don’t think Sami will understand the reference, Madame.” Hell, most people in Salem wouldn’t understand the reference. Vivian made constant references to the fact that she was not supposed to be in Salem. She wanted to take Victor and live in the Mediterranean somewhere. I really hope they make her intelligent this time around.
But as for her entrance, it was a bit confusing. First, Brady goes home. Why not keep him there? His reaction to seeing Viv would be important. Kate’s reaction was of course given attention, but then we see Andre’s mouth open. Why? What issue does Andre have with Vivian? Does he know who Vivian is? Tony knows her, but Andre never interacted with her. How will Hope react? These two characters barely interacted over the years. Chad and Abigail are there. They won’t know who she is. Jen is there, and while it is true that initially Jen would be mistrustful of Vivian because of her history with Carly, Vivian redeemed herself to Jennifer because Vivian saved Laura’s life. In fact, the appropriate reaction from Jennifer would be to give Vivian a kiss and a hug, but somehow we know that won’t happen. The only character at the party who merits a strong reaction from Vivian’s entrance is Kate, and the party isn’t about Kate, so it seems peculiar that Vivian would even head over there. Why did Vivian go to Chad and Abigail’s New Year’s Eve party to be in a room with a bunch of people she mainly doesn’t have strong relationships with?
Also, Will mentioned today that Susan had a visitor and she hasn’t been well since. It is safe to assume the visitor was Vivian because Susan thought Vivian was a vampire. Those who were watching the show the last time Vivian was on might remember that when Vivian had scenes with EJ, they interacted as though the two characters never met before, when in fact Vivian was hiding in an adjacent hospital room during EJ’s birth and had much to do with the character when he was a baby.January 2, 2018 at 2:01 pm #1202453870
I am sure they will fill in the many holes in the Stefan O. DiMera story in time but overall I enjoyed Vivian’s return with Tyler Christopher’s Stefan and look forward to what comes next… I do wish Ciara would tell Hope the truth about Rafe and Sami… Will’s crush on Paul is amusing me; I have the feeling it is going to be awhile before he gets his memory back. maybe they will explore Will and Paul? (poor Sonny, though, so disappointed when Will wasn’t at home)… Brady and Eve sure were HOT together today!… an enjoyable episode!

Worst Surprise: the death of Angelica – there was more story to tell imo.
Worst Exit: Nicole left with a whimper instead of a bang (and what happened with that rumor that she was going to return briefly in December?)
Nice Surprise: I am enjoying Victoria Konefal’s take on Ciara and I am finally beginning to like Claire, who annoyed me until she was paired with Tripp.
so much more but that’s a few thoughts on the year!
