I haven’t read anything about Thao Penghlis leaving the show so I am wondering if we are being led down a garden path with Andre’s death by murder? I have never liked Andre or his potrayer but it does seem like a strange plot twist at this time. I hated the way Andre was treating Gabi on Friday’s episode, it was making my skin crawl. If he really is dead then I think Anna is his murderer (or murderess!).
It will be interesting to see what happens next…January 22, 2018 at 10:26 am #1202474513
It was an interesting end to the week for sure!
I don’t want to jump too hard to any conclusions before at least seeing a little aftermath in today’s episode, but I’m not having a tough time believing Andre is really dead. I did see somewhere online Thaao Penghlis saying farewell to the show and such. There was something of an exchange with Camila Banus, where he talked about how tough it was doing their final scenes because of how much he loves working with her, and she said she was sure she’d see him again soon. Part of me thought that was code for the character not actually being dead, but seemed more general than that. Ron Carlivati doesn’t shy away from killing off characters, and I guess it’s possible that Penghlis is interested in retiring. While not as old as Bill Hayes, Peggy McCay or John Aniston, Thaao is in his 70s.
I loved the way Friday’s episode ended, with a sudden time shift and some serious questions about what happened between where these characters had been and where they were in the morning. Aside from the central mystery itself, I’m really curious about some of the other things that were going on. What, if anything, did Andre tell Kate after she said she loved him? What happened with Kate and Chad overnight that had them acknowledging what a rough night it was and apparently wearing the same clothes the next day? What happened to delay the IPO? Who else might Gabi have told about being fired? Did John discover anything pointing more concretely to Andre’s involvement the sabotage, and relay that information to Chad? Did anyone close to Theo discover or come to suspect that Andre was behind the warehouse red herring? There is quite a lot to consider, and I’m very excited now to see this and the drama with Lani’s pregnancy play out. Besides all the obvious or presented suspects — Vivian, Stefan O, Anna, Gabi, Kate, Chad — plenty of people hated Andre and could have, either because of Theo’s shooting or some other motivation, found reason to kill him.
It was great to see Lucas back and looking healthy. It’s been so long since Lucas had been sober and sensible that seeing him in Friday’s episode felt like a striking contrast. The idea of Lucas and Chloe being involved again is interesting, and I guess will be revisited once Chloe is back from Vienna and Nadia Bjorlin is back from maternity leave. The scenes between Lucas and Kate were really nice as well.
I also really liked the scenes between Vivian and Stefan O. I think because Vivian can be comical — her insults this time around have been great — it’s easy to forget how casually ruthless she can be when she thinks it necessary. And it was good to get the contrast from Stefan that he is at least somewhat less extreme than Vivian. The scenes with Vivian, John and Chad were fun as well. I laughed out loud at Vivian saying to John that, “though our genealogy was revised,” she still thinks of him as family. Vivian only needs one son or nephew to dote on at a time, and clearly that is currently not John.
I’m actually going to miss Andre, his redemptive friendship with Abigail and his weird occasional attempts at family bonding. That bachelor party he threw for Chad and Sonny was one of the funniest episodes of last year. Contrasting his murder with that of Deimos last year, while I’m equally curious about who the culprit is, I’m much more interested in this one. For one thing, I do like Andre, so I care that he was murdered. Deimos’s murder felt like it took way way way too long to happen, so I didn’t really care who did it. I was just glad someone finally did it. Also, the fact that Deimos drugged all the people who wanted to kill him just made him even less sympathetic and made the stakes of learning who the murderer was a lot lower. I’m glad that’s not the case here.
While the whole cast has been really great lately, kudos to Marci Miller for that extremely well-executed scene where Abigail finds Andre at the end of the episode. It felt immediately moving, and actually reminded me a lot of when Gabi found Will after he was (not) murdered by Ben.
And finally, there are rumblings that Christie Clark will be back as Carrie for something involving Anna, which to me implies it will be pretty soon and not last very long. It’s always great to see Carrie, but I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to have her back on the show full-time.January 22, 2018 at 4:08 pm #1202474896
O.K., so at least for now Andre is dead (is anybody ever really dead on soaps anymore?). I think it will likely be Anna whodunnit. My guess is we will get lots of scenes showing what happened during those hours between the time lapse and those will be interesting scenes to watch.
Where are all my favorite characters? I hope we get to see some of them soon!January 22, 2018 at 4:58 pm #1202474951
The murder mystery looks like a fun story so far. I do not think Anna killed Andre. The most obvious suspect is Vivian, who blatantly suggested killing him. Both Anna and Vivian are recurring characters, which makes them more likely candidates. Or perhaps there will be a major twist and it will be someone else. I wonder if Tony will somehow play into this; he has been mentioned so often lately.
From this week’s promo, it looks like John and Steve are going to get a story. I am rather curious as to what it will entail. Although I am missing some of my favorites right now, I commend the writers for giving virtually everyone their moment in the spotlight — with the one exception of Chloe; I am a somewhat surprised that she is still on the show given her lack of story.
Christie Clark is on her way back for a visit. Since Anna is likely to be the prime suspect in Andre’s murder, I imagine that Carrie will provide moral support. And we still have Greg Rikaart, Lisa Rinna, Jen Lilley, and evidently Robert Scott Wilson is returning as well. Now that Genie Francis is free of GH, perhaps she can reprise her role of Diana from the late 80s.January 22, 2018 at 7:05 pm #1202475025
Drake Hogestyn had mentioned something about this storyline with Steve in an interview recently; sounds like we are back into international intrigue stuff with it.
What is Carrie’s relationship with Anna? Refresh my memory!January 22, 2018 at 7:40 pm #1202475050
Anna is Carrie’s mother.January 22, 2018 at 7:54 pm #1202475077
I always thought Carrie and Sami were full sisters. So they are half-sisters. Belle is Sami’s full sister. how did I not know this? Anna wasn’t on the show when Carrie and Sami were constantly fighting over Austin.January 23, 2018 at 6:06 am #1202475627
Carrie is Roman and Anna’s daughter. Sami is Roman and Marlena’s daughter. Belle is Marlena and John’s daughter conceived while Marlena was married to Roman. Sami saw John and Marlena doing the deed and that’s what turned her into hurricane Sami. So Carrie and Belle are both Sami’s half-sisters.January 23, 2018 at 7:48 am #1202475973
^thanks! I knew about Belle but not about Carrie. It’s because Anna was off the canvas when Carrie was on it most of the time.January 23, 2018 at 10:23 am #1202476323
Yes, Anna was on the show in the early 80s, but then Leann Hunley went on to do some primetime work (including playing the teacher that slept with her student Pacey on Dawson’s Creek). She was, I believe, the last DAYS actress to win an Emmy for quite a few years, between her supporting actress win in 1986 and Tamara Braun’s supporting actress win in 2009. But yeah, the character was largely MIA until she came back for a while about 10 years ago. Until their scenes together last year, Leann Hunley and Christie Clark hadn’t been on-screen together for like 30 years.
I also love thinking about the funny chain of partial and non-siblings in the Roman/Marlena/John family of children. Carrie is half-sister to Sami and Eric, who are half-siblings to Belle, who is half-sister to Brady and Paul, themselves only half-brothers. (Technically Cassie and Rex are also half-siblings to Carrie, Sami, and Eric, but those two have been pretty thoroughly swept under the rug.) It’s funny to think that Carrie isn’t at all related to Belle or Brady, and how Brady, despite the talk about him being their brother, isn’t blood related to Sami or Eric. I don’t think we’ve ever gotten much on the relationships between Carrie and Belle or Carrie and Brady, but it would be cool to see those explored more.
Carrie may be providing Anna moral support or possibly legal representation! I am thrilled we’ll get to see her, though I wish it were longer term.
I’m certainly drawn in by the murder story so far. Anna does seem waaaay too obvious so early on to be the actual killer. But then there are quite a few that seem suspect. Anna looks to have had some kind of confrontation with Andre, but maybe didn’t know he was dead. Vivian and Stefan O. clearly did know that he was dead already, and it seemed like Gabi may have known already as well?
I do also miss some of the other characters who are on the backburner, but I’m enjoying the stories we are seeing very much. I’m assuming that Chloe’s lack of substantive story was just because the writers didn’t want her heavily involved in anything while she’s visibly pregnant. I’m guessing that once she gets back, she’ll be more integral. Or maybe they just like her as a background presence like she’s been for the last few months.January 23, 2018 at 10:29 am #1202476332
of course we got the characters I have been missing today! (:January 24, 2018 at 9:25 am #1202477306
I could watch Will and Marlena just shooting the breeze every day. Chandler Massey and Deidre Hall are so good together. And I’m loving the writing for Will. He knows he shouldn’t be pursuing Paul, and Paul’s giving him absolutely nothing to work with, but he’s doing it anyway. Also, the look on Will’s face and he and Marlena went to see Roman was hilarious. But Will working at the pub feels like a great idea. Roman is constantly drafting other relatives with real and demanding jobs, like Eric and Kayla, to help out at the pub, so he could probably use an assistant manager and bartender.January 24, 2018 at 9:28 am #1202477310
ALSO, the Kiriakis mansion has now officially earned its place in the Salem guidebooks: Worst Place to Eavesdrop. Anything anyone overhears there is a lie! Or maybe the motto is never believe Brady, whether he thinks you can hear him or not.

Will and Paul have a wonderful chemistry together. Watching today’s scenes helped explain a closeness I observed watching Chandler, Christopher and Freddie in a Days video interview with Michael Fairman.
Today’s episode was enjoyable!January 26, 2018 at 9:47 am #1202479586
I love seeing Will and Paul together, and it was great to see them like they were in Wednesday’s episode, being friends, joking around, talking about some deeper stuff, and just having the kind of easy dynamic that Will keeps talking about. It was a good example of showing something that a character keeps saying he feels. Will is so much more at ease with Paul or Marlena than he has been with people like Sonny and Sami.
The scenes with Sonny, Brady and Eve were amusing. In case anyone wasn’t sure that Brady is a jerk, here’s further proof. It’s funny that several people have now warned Eve about Brady using her, and she’s had the thought herself, but she continues to go down this road with him. I think, though, I would prefer it if Sonny wasn’t so contentious to Eve. I know that no one really wants her there and that her association with Deimos makes her wicked by association, but it seems like Sonny doesn’t have any specific reason to make an enemy of her at the moment. Considering how much he hated running Basic Black, I’d think he would be happy to have someone else not just running that company but happy to do so. She’s not trying to become CEO of Titan; she just wants to make Basic Black successful.
