I actually had a similar thought about Bill Hayes watching yesterday’s episode. He’s still got so much spirit and charm. It’s pretty much always fun seeing him and Julie, even when Julie is trying to string up poor Gabi for Andre’s murder!
And in people it’s always great to see news, I loved the flirtation between Melinda Trask and Stefan O. It’s fun seeing Trask outside of work, and really it’s great to be seeing her at all.
The theory of Abigail as the murderer still makes the most sense to me, too, mostly because the other possibilities — Vivian and/or Stefan — are just pretty anticlimactic. But that does raise an interesting set of questions about the woman on the video tape, because that really seemed set up by Stefan to throw blame onto Gabi. It’s possible he just happened upon it, and it was Abigail in the coat and wig, or that he just set it up without knowing who the killer was. There’s also the crazy possibility that Abigail did commit the murder, and Stefan knows she did, and he’s been befuddled by most of their interactions since. I’m excited to find out!
I, too, am annoyed with how they’ve dropped the ball on Will and Paul. I knew after Monday’s episode it would be days before we got any clarity on that or found out what happened. So while I don’t like it, I’m not really any more or less annoyed than I was on Monday. I have no idea where things are going either with Will and Paul or with the poisoning storyline.February 16, 2018 at 4:27 pm #1202495294
So we all know now what we suspected: Abigail murdered Andre. It made sense to me that they would give Chad and And Abigail a new storyline, new conflict, something more to do than just have sex all the time. The one thing that is jarring is that Abigail is larger and taller than Gabi, but whatever…
So I guess we are getting the sense that William Christian’s character is somehow forcing John to do these awful things through blackmail or coercive threats. It’s unclear how Billie is involved. We will get clarity next week.
I read that the ratings went down for Days the past 2 weeks. I felt the stories were too unclear and muddied, a bit maddening for my taste… still it’s the best of the four soaps, which isn’t saying much these days!February 19, 2018 at 8:58 am #1202496924
I wonder how many fans had guessed that it was Abigail who murdered Andre? I’m not sure I would have realized it on my own, even though once you guys said it, I was almost certain it was right. Soap Opera Digest also spoiled the reveal on Friday morning with the cover of this week’s issue, for anyone who saw it on Twitter or their website before DAYS aired. It’s an interesting twist, and having Stefan discover Abigail dressed up as Gabi is really interesting. I’m really eager to see where things go today.
Apparently we’ll also find out today what John did to Will and Paul, though honestly it’s like a week too late. The story has hit some interesting beats as of Friday, though, with what at first seemed like just a very odd ISA mission now taking on a more sinister tone with this mysterious Van Damme being in charge and Billie having had to kill Derek Frye to save John. When Billie gave John something and sent him to see Steve, I kind of assumed it was an antidote, but who knows. The walls appear to be closing in on John a bit with this one, so he’ll have to do a quick about-face to maintain any decent standing among his family and friends.
I don’t often pay too much attention to ratings, but it’s a shame to see they’ve gone down. It’s not like the show can react much, since they filmed all of this so long ago, and who even knows what chaotic effect the preemptions because of the Olympics will have. (I believe there are preemptions in the Central, Mountain and Pacific time zones.) I wonder if some people stopped watching because they were upset that Andre was killed? Despite my quibbles here and there, I’m still very much enjoying the show. My biggest concern given the last few weeks is that things either resolve in a timely enough manner or be kept sufficiently exciting that they don’t need to be. Now that Eli has agreed not to tell anyone that he’s the father of Lani’s baby, where does that story go? Do we get fairly unconvincing fake-outs every few weeks until the baby is born or JJ and Lani attempt to get married? Do they now just put the secret on the backburner and just focus on the couple’s pre-marital bliss until things get crazy? The way the secret of Rafe’s sleeping with Sami has been handled has been not very exciting, as people have been finding out and threatening to tell and then not telling for the last three months. I think there are still plenty of old school fans who can’t really get behind the idea of Hope and Rafe together, and now the fact that Rafe has been deceiving her for months whilst she excitedly plans their wedding is probably really rubbing people the wrong way.February 19, 2018 at 9:16 am #1202496926
^Derek Frye was the name of the character William Christian played on AMC; not sure of his name on Days? So he was killed during the “breaking news” on Friday?
I am hoping there is a good explanation but I read a spoiler (the spoiler was in the headline, I did not read the article so it was vague but it still upset me) that upset me about Paul and Will – I will try to give benefit of the doubt. Perhaps John told Will and Paul what was really going on? I hope so. Otherwise, John is not redeemable for me.
Here’s hoping there is no “breaking news” during today’s show! (:February 19, 2018 at 12:20 pm #1202497028
O.K., so everything was exactly the way I thought it would go today. John has the reasons I thought he had, Paul and Will have escaped (temporarily), Abigail thinks she’s Gabi…. my only question is: is Billie dead or alive?
Was this character Pamela on the show before? Who is the actress who is portraying her? (I was thinking so much how much I wish she was being played by Robin Strasser! But then I would be rooting for her and wanting her to stay forever!) (;February 20, 2018 at 8:21 am #1202497446
What an exciting Monday it was!
Yeah, I don’t know the name of William Christian’s character on DAYS, which was why I just called him Derek Frye. On Friday, he and John got into a confrontation where he insisted John show him the bodies of supposedly dead Will and Paul. John led him into the empty mausoleum (hilariously, the guy thought that Will’s and Paul’s corpses would just be laying in the middle of the floor?), they struggled over the gun, and he almost got John until Billie showed up and super dramatically shot him from behind.
I have to say, I’m pretty impressed with the backstory on John poisoning Steve. While I had assumed it was coming from someone high up in the ISA, and that John was basically in a situation where he had to do it or just let someone else take care of killing Steve, AND I assumed eventually he’d try to cure him, I did not expect the reasoning for all of this to tie back to the Joey/Ava thing in such a logical way. I did think it was ridiculous when Joey confessed to killing Ava and went to prison that it was just fine that the ISA had lied to try to cover for Steve supposedly killing her. ISA Director Pamela Van Damme needing to get rid of Steve to save her reputation after that whole thing is the kind of consequence you don’t normally see on soaps, but I loved it.
Pamela (played by Martha Hackett) seemed familiar to me, but I didn’t remember her being on the show before. Apparently she was on previously when the ISA covered up Ava’s murder for Steve. I guess you don’t get to be in charge of the ISA without being dangerous, because this Pamela seems like she’s planning to cause some trouble on her way down. She apparently shot Billie (it looked like Billie was just shot in the arm to me, but I could have just not seen it clearly), and now is knocking on Tripp’s door.
I was very glad to see Will and Paul (FINALLY), though by the end of the episode I kind of wanted them to back inside that secret wall in the mausoleum and just hide out there until Pamela is apprehended or neutralized. I liked their scenes together. It’s good how the dynamic is changing between them, with Paul showing some real caring about Will and Will just being irritated that John knocked them out and tied them up. I also liked the moment when Paul broke out of the ropes, when Will seemed to get a lot less annoyed and remembered that Paul is super hot.
The Gabigail/Stefan scenes were exciting to watch. I had figured that Abigail had another personality that was more in the traditional vein of the protector and/or troublemaker personalities shows tend to use (like how on OLTL Jessica had Bess, who protected her and cleaned up Tess’s messes), but I didn’t expect her to have episodes where she thinks she’s Gabi. That’s pretty out there, but it’s definitely fun. It was fun seeing Marci Miller imitating Camila Banus’s speech style and delivery, and I love the degree to which Stefan is totally thrown by this. I don’t know how this sort of thing would work in real life, and I’m trying not to get caught up in trying to make actual sense of what’s happening in her head, though I’d love it if at some point someone like Marlena gave a brief but actually grounded explanation for how this sort of thing happens and how it works.
Overall, I thought it was a very well executed episode. Looking forward to today’s!February 20, 2018 at 8:40 am #1202497461
I mostly enjoyed it. I had to get off of a FB page because they keep spoiling in their spoiler headlines (hint: hide the actual spoiler!). ): i am upset by one of the spoilers in particular but I am trying to adopt a wait and see attitude. I was surprised yesterday by how accurate my speculations were about John, Will and Paul, and the rest of it, including Abigail but I didn’t quite expect her to actually think she is Gabi. I am really looking forward to what comes next. I wonder if Billie will live or die? We will find out soon!
Honestly my favorite soap right now is the June 1975 episodes of the Doctors that are airing on RetroTV! Presumed dead Mike returning has really been a great storyline! Anna Stuart in particular – as Dr. Toni Ferra Powres/Stewart – has been amazing! (: I have started to get used to Armand Assante as the nuMike too.February 21, 2018 at 4:55 pm #1202498428
The story about John poisoning Steve is not really the kind that I go for, but it’s working primarily because its reach has involved so many characters, including Paul, Will, Billie, Tripp, Ciara, and Hope. Also, the writers have once again carefully considered the show’s history in a manner that elevates a relatively cliched concept. The careful and clever integration of story, history, and character is definitely what sets Days of our Lives apart and makes it enjoyable.
It’s great that Eric and Jennifer are making inroads, but it was incredibly inappropriate for Eric to disrupt her date, especially given that he is such a nice guy otherwise. Yet it was also comical and passionate.
So we were right about Abigail murdering Andre! It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I appreciate that they did not drag out the reveal. The pacing of the show is very good right now, and other stories are building, so I am confident that the show will continue to be exciting for the foreseeable future.
P.S. Freeman, I want to watch The Doctors! But I do not have Retro TV.February 21, 2018 at 6:31 pm #1202498465
^I don’t watch on RetroTV; I will send you a private message and let you know! (:
I found it strange that Pamela was here & gone in a blink of an eye! That sure was quick!February 22, 2018 at 10:00 am #1202498862
It was quick! But I think it worked. Part of me was hoping for an episode that was all John and Billie doing action scenes, which would have been hilarious. There’s just this level of melodrama that both actors have, which combines with the fact that neither of them is really trained to be an action star (at least not at this point) that just makes the scenes fun, but I don’t think hurt the story really. The episode where all the action when down was fun, but it felt a little much that it took like two scenes for anyone to realize that “Steve’s son” meant Tripp rather than Joey. Thank goodness for Paul, who consistently seems to find the most pertinent information and clues in these situations and generally exhibits much better decision-making that John and Steve.
One of the things I’m really glad about right now is that the show seems to be focusing on developing the younger characters, which it really needs considering how high the average age of the cast is. I’ve really come to love Tripp and Ciara, and Claire is growing on me more and more. JJ and Gabi are also really great, along with Will, Chad, Abigail, Paul, Sonny, and Eli. I’m not yet feeling quite the same pull for Lani yet, but I do like her as well. After the whole thing with John poisoning Steve, it feels like time to pass the ‘action hero’ baton to Paul. He, Hope and Rafe are the only people on the show I’d trust to get me out of a hairy situation, and maybe Eli.
I agree that it was pretty inappropriate of Eric to interrupt Jennifer’s date with Dr. Shah, but I could understand that he felt urgent action was needed after finding out that Anna had been unintentionally sabotaging them. I also loved that they played on Eric’s well-established love of Jennifer’s donuts for those scenes. I really love the two of them together. I also like that Brady has been such a blatant jerk. He was trying so hard to push Eric and Jennifer together when he was worried about Eric taking Nicole from him, and now he’s against them out of spite. It was nice seeing Jennifer and Eve in scenes together, too, even if we didn’t get full fireworks.
It was great seeing Maggie and Victor, though their whole encounter in the episode felt slightly off to me. Both felt a little more contentious than I would have expected, with Victor so blatantly lying about his plan with Brady and then throwing out the “I’m not Mickey Horton” line, and Maggie insisting that Victor tell Eve about his plan to undermine her. Their scenes work a lot better for me when it feels like Victor is tending toward doing something mean or callous, and by talking to Maggie, he softens and decides to take a less drastic action.February 23, 2018 at 4:07 pm #1202499728
Just finished Thursday’s episode. A few comments…
Will: “Why don’t we just chill and be a family?” Funny! I loved the way Chandler Massey played this scene.
Tyler Christopher was great in his scenes today as Stefan tried to figure out Abigail.
Loved Maggie telling off Brady. I loved everything she had to say to Brady and Victor too for that matter.February 25, 2018 at 6:06 pm #1202500734
Interesting news: Bravo will be re-broadcasting Days episodes between 6-8 a.m. EST – they will be starting with September 2011 episodes, so it will be the Chandler Massey years! and E.J. and Sami! This is very surprising. I have forgotten the exact date when they will begin to air.February 25, 2018 at 9:54 pm #1202500906
That’s exciting news about Bravo re-airing DAYS episodes! I’m going to have to start recording those, because I’d love to relive a lot of that stuff.
I think Tyler Christopher has been great in these scenes with Abigail and Gabigail. His confusion about the whole thing is really entertaining.
After watching Thursday’s episode, I guess I see why the stuff with Maggie and Victor felt different! I do totally agree with Maggie about what Victor and Brady are doing to Eve. I also like seeing Maggie get meatier material to play. It would be cool if this split were leading into a bigger story where some of the issues between are explored and/or Victor thinks about what he’s been up to and makes an effort to make amends or something. But it seems more likely that Maggie and Victor are basically on the same screentime plan as Adrienne and Justin, and this is a story that will just play out in very occasional nuggets over the next few months.
It was a good ending to Friday’s episode with Claire finally discovering the secret Ciara was keeping just as someone arrives to surprise marry Hope and Rafe the day before the wedding. In addition to the John/Billie all-action-scene episode I mentioned earlier, I also would enjoy a few episodes of a Ciara/Tripp reality show of them just shooting the breeze. Some of the background stuff Claire got on her recording of them was hilarious.February 25, 2018 at 10:06 pm #1202500907
Bravo will be airing the episodes beginning sometime in March but it didn’t say the exact day.
Where is Adrienne? I hate how little screen time Judi Evans has been getting. Perhaps it’s her choice, IDK, but it seems like Ron C doesn’t like her character.
Maggie’s scenes with Victor, Brady and Eve were fantastic! I just love Suzanne Rogers! She has been on the show for 42 years!February 26, 2018 at 2:28 am #1202500971
Congrats to DAYS on the new deal with Bravo! And what a neat idea to start by airing classic episodes of the show during its very best of years! I will definitely be tuning in, if only as it may fill some of the void that James Scott’s departure left on the show.
And a big congrats still to Susan and Bill Hayes for being selected as this year’s Daytime Emmys Lifetime Achievement Award recipients! I can’t think of anyone more deserving. This award couldn’t have come at a better time, especially on the heels of when Susan has graced this past year with some of her best work to date. Of course I’ll also be rooting for her in the Supporting Actress race, but considering how insanely competitive this category always is (and this year is no exception), at least this way, she’ll walk away with a proper consolation prize.
