Yes, Bill Hayes is a wonder! Not only does he seem to be getting around better than some of the actors in their 70s and 80s, but he’s also giving really moving performances. Good for him. I figured Julie would wake up by Christmas, and I’m glad she did. Susan Seaforth Hayes mentioned on the Soap Opera Digest podcast this past week (a great interview, btw) that she’s not submitting herself for Emmy consideration this year, which is a shame considering how much I’ve enjoyed her work lately. I’m hoping Julie doesn’t have amnesia! It would be the soapiest thing to do, but considering how close what she knows is to coming out anyway, it feels unnecessary.
The scenes between Gabi and Abigail at the hospital were fun. I really enjoy watching the two of them go back and forth, especially with Abigail really standing up to Gabi and not taking any of her crap. The divorce papers at the end were great, but boy do I feel bad for Stefan. I’d heard that Billy Flynn was on into April, and I assumed the same was true for Kate Mansi.
Casey Moss also gave a beautiful performance in Friday’s episode with JJ counseling this troubled young woman who attempted suicide.December 24, 2018 at 11:16 am #1202709322
I was puzzled by how Abigail was able to get a divorce so quickly?
so Julie doesn’t remember and may never remember, o.k.
Gabi throwing the test results in the fire was a big surprise.
Abigail confronting Jennifer was a strong scene.
I was disappointed I didn’t see Will and Sonny’s ornaments on the tree, and also that Will was absent ): (We did see Lucas’s ornament quite prominently displayed)
Abigail running into Ben was a good moment.
Gabi inviting Chad to live with her was interesting.
It was a nice episode (:December 25, 2018 at 2:02 pm #1202709869
So surprised that Charlotte’s paternity was revealed on today’s episode! It sure has been a terrible day for Stefan! I do love it when characters i despise get their just comeuppance! (:
Will as Santa Claus was something else! (;
Glad we got some Wilson on today’s episode!December 27, 2018 at 9:07 am #1202711386
I just watched the last three episodes last night, and they were fantastic! The Christmas Eve and Christmas Day episodes were both really nicely balanced with touching moments, bits of humor, and strong dramatic payoffs. It was really smart of the show to build to big reveals happening in episodes that more people might put on while they’re at home with family. The classic method for most people watching soaps is to watch with family, a grandparent or parent passing it on to a grandchild or child, gatherings of people having the show on where maybe only one person is really watching it but others are looking on and curious about what’s happening. It was also beautiful that they dedicated those two episodes to Frank Parker and Peggy McCay.
I know people will be kind of split on this, but I feel so bad for Stefan! In less than 24 hours, he lost the woman he loved and his child, and since his mother was apparently killed earlier in the year, he just seems so sad and alone. You know you’re in a bad place when Ben is the only person there trying to keep you from going to the dark side. It’s a cool touch having Ben end up being the one to try to comfort Stefan about losing this child, since the exact same thing happened to him — Abigail was pregnant, the paternity test results were switched to make him think he was the father, but eventually the truth was revealed and it turned out to be Chad’s baby. I can’t wait to see what Stefan has planned for Gabi now.
As always, the decorating of the Horton Christmas tree was wonderful and moving. It seems every year there’s some tragedy that helps to create a moving moment for the family, and this year that was when they gave Lani the ornament for her and Eli’s baby boy, which was very sweet but also sad. I was really glad Julie insisted on coming home for it, and it was nice to see Sarah being reasonable and pleasant and to see Ciara and Claire getting along.
I was a little surprised that there wasn’t a stronger Brady presence around the Christmas episodes, no Eric or Marlena and John, but it worked to go with the flow of the storyline. I didn’t notice that Will and Sonny’s ornaments weren’t on the three, but maybe they were planning to add them later? Julie was carrying around Gabi’s ornament on Christmas, so maybe Will, Sonny and Ariana’s ornaments were wherever hers bad been? The storyline with Will, Sonny and Leo is working for me in that it really is getting me reinvested in Will and Sonny as a couple. The Santa Claus switcheroo was really cute.
I would guess that Kate Mansi, if she is submitting at all, would do so in supporting rather than guest performer, right? I know she hasn’t been on that many episodes this year, but she’s been really great.December 27, 2018 at 12:33 pm #1202711658
Surprised by Gabi turning herself in – I have the feeling charges will be dropped against her and that’s how she will get to stay on the show.
It’s been almost exactly one year since Tyler Christopher started on the show as Stefan. His acting has often been really great but I don’t really care for his character.
Does anybody else think that when Jack returns next week he will be married to EVE?
Now that the year is almost over (2 more episodes to go!) – any ideas for individual episodes the show should submit for directing, writing and series? I can think of very specific episodes for both GH and Y&R but am fuzzier when it comes to Days. I was reading through our year’s citations but I was concentrating on the acting performances more than the other production categories.December 27, 2018 at 12:40 pm #1202711664
I have absolutely loved Stefan as a new character. They needed a character like that to replace Stefano and Tyler Christopher has been a fantastic addition. You also liked Stacy Haiduk so I definitely don’t go by anything you say.December 27, 2018 at 1:05 pm #1202711679
^I liked Stacey Haiduk as Susan only. and it’s always o.k. for us to see things differently. Civility is always a good thing.January 1, 2019 at 3:31 am #1202715288
So Jack is back and Eve is his new best friend (: They are trotting out amnesia once again. It would be great if instead of Abigail being told by someone if she were to run into him on her own, but I doubt they will do it. I thought the Jack reveal wasn’t done all that well dialogue-wise, and Matthew Ashford was a bit off to me but it was his first day back on the show.
Here’s hoping for a strong 2019 for Days! (:January 3, 2019 at 10:31 am #1202717333
Jack’s return was entertaining but not particularly satisfying. I know the whole thing with soaps is to make the audience realize what they want and then make them wait to get it, so I understand that Jack couldn’t just come back in and start embracing Jennifer, JJ and Abigail. Amnesia is a classic trope, and I prefer that to something more emotionally contrived, like Jack remembers everything but is mad that Jennifer was engaged to Eric, or that she’s at the party with some other guy (poor Dr. Shaw, who honestly should just stop going to Doug’s Place with Jennifer ever), or that no one came to search for him while he was in whatever hellscape. I liked the scenes with Abigail a little more, and it seems Jack is already getting hip to the fact that Eve isn’t really all that trustworthy, despite being his only friend. The writing for Eve is bugging me a little, because she’s just being so terrible, very cold and cruel. It’s one thing to behave that way to Jennifer and Brady, but the things she said to Chloe seemed very uncalled for, and the things she said about Abigail were just nasty. It also seems funny that in these situations it takes the other people in town FOREVER to realize maybe they should just not trash talk the manipulator (in this case Eve) in front of the memory-impaired victim (Jack), and it would probably go a long way to at least getting him to hear them out.
It’s kind of nuts that Rafe expected Justin to represent Gabi. Rafe thinks Gabi is too good for a sleazy lawyer like Ted Laurent, but for one thing, she did a bunch of terrible stuff so she deserves a sleazy lawyer, and for another, last time Justin represented her she ended up in prison for a crime she didn’t commit mostly because his defense strategy was insanely bad. He should be begging Ted to take her case, and thanking Hope for doing literally anything to try to help Gabi at all, considering that in additional to all the stuff she did to Abigail, her best friend/cousin’s daughter, she also is semi-responsible for Julie’s fall down the stairs.
Does anyone know if Tyler Christopher is back filming at DAYS? I kind of assumed that Brandon Barash had just come on long enough for DAYS to sideline the character of Stefan, but I never really had any reason to believe that other than just a guess. Tyler tweeted yesterday that he’s so thankful to be playing Stefan, which made it sound to me like he’s at the show now. Anyone have any info on that?January 4, 2019 at 3:49 am #1202718058
Yesterday’s episode was pre-empted for inaugurations of various awful politicians ): glad to get the recap from Michael! (:
I read that Gabi’s fate is up to Abigail – I am assuming she did not press charges, letting Gabi off the hook.
I read that Haley’s mom is none other than the D.A.
Did Zander return on yesterday’s episode? I read that Jan. 3rd was his first new air date.January 4, 2019 at 9:30 am #1202718312
You’re correct about both Gabi/Abigail and Xander. After rehashing with Gabi all of the things that Gabi did and her reasons, Abigail said she wasn’t going to press charges, saying that, for one thing, she doesn’t want Ariana (funny to remember she is Ariana’s godmother) to grow up without her mother, and for another she recognizes that, even though she was mentally ill and her alters were to blame, she really did cause Gabi a lot of pain. Gabi seemed stunned and humbled by Abigail’s magnanimous decision.
And yes, Xander did return to plot with Eve, who gave him something on a flash drive as payment for him giving Jack to her so that she could use him to destroy Jennifer (emotionally). They pretty casually recap that Xander got Jack out of the building after it exploded. Between the scenes with Eve/Xander and those with Jack/Jennifer, they essentially say that Dr. Rolfe used his serum to revive Jack, and has been, along with Xander, taking care of Jack and nursing him back to health for years. Memory loss is apparently a common side effect of Rolfe’s serum. They also say the reason EJ wasn’t doing as well as Jack is basically that Jack just had a few more years of recovery. I’m kind of amazed how straightforward they’ve made Rolfe’s resurrection method, but I think it works. Will, I think, is an exception to the bit about needing years to really recover because he wasn’t quite dead yet when Susan and Rolfe found him.
I am thrilled to have Xander back in town. I’d love to see him back at the Kiriakis mansion trading insults with the folks there, and it would be fun to see him interacting with Leo, but he seems to be laying low for the moment.
It had crossed my mind that Haley might be connected to Melinda Trask, and obviously I’d love any reason to get Laura Kai Chen back on my screen. That Haley’s last name is the same as Melinda’s real-life portrayer may have been a little clue about a connect. (Also, feel free to consider this an FYC for Laura Kai Chen for Guest Performer at the Goldies, or the Daytime Emmys for that matter.)January 4, 2019 at 8:24 pm #1202719113
On today’s episode it seemed that Jack was figuring Eve out but then he started making out with her???? Is she just THAT seductive? I’m enjoying the storyline but found that to be ridiculous.January 7, 2019 at 9:27 am #1202724307
I don’t know how I would feel after mostly being cooped up in warehouses for rehab from my resurrection for six years, and maybe a person telling you a bunch of lies and manipulating you into hurting your family becomes exactly the turn-on you’re looking for, but it certainly felt ridiculous to me. Maybe someone will tell Jack about the whole deal of Eve having an affair with his teenage son while that son was dating her daughter, which seems like a vital piece of information that it’s crazy no one has mentioned yet.
I’m looking forward to some Xander/Leo team-up this week!January 8, 2019 at 9:35 am #1202725786
I thought yesterday’s episode was really good.
The conflict between Ben and Ciara, where Ben working for Stefan presents the real possibility of him having to do things that she’s not okay with, is nicely drawn, I think, and the two actors did a great job with it. The writing around those scenes and the way they played with and against the Jack and Kayla scenes, where Kayla tells Jack about their history and how he raped her decades ago, worked really well. It’s also always fun watching Eve and Jennifer spar with one another, especially when Jennifer gets few good digs in, as she did. I also liked the Hope and Stefan scenes. Hope trying to get Stefan to flip on Ben was so ridiculous, and I’m glad Stefan called her on that and on her very clearly going after Ben for personal reasons and her shooting Stefano. And Xander was both fun and beautiful, as always. His scenes with Victor and then Maggie were a hoot. Victor suggesting he’d sooner have Ciara run Titan than Xander was really funny, largely because Ciara is barely any less qualified than many of the character who end up running companies on soaps. A short internship and I think she’ll be good to go, haha.January 9, 2019 at 12:03 pm #1202727797
Michael, I think it’s time to start a new thread as we are on page 47 and post #704. Would you like to start one? Or do you think we should just continue with this one until we can’t any longer?
Leo and Zander were very amusing in their shirtless scenes. My thinking is that Zander will make a deal to seduce Leo in order to get rid of him from Sonny’s life in exchange for whatever Zander wants….
Ben and Chad’s scenes didn’t make sense to me: why would Chad stay in this long conversation with Ben? Only on soaps!
Ben is in really in hot water with Ciara. Obstacles, of course, super couples always have obstacles!
