The idea of Stacy Haiduk and Cynthia Watros switching roles is really interesting. Kristen being more overly nutty would probably work better on Watros than her version of Nina, and Haiduk would probably give Nina the undercurrent of loony that she’s currently lacking.
While I agree that Christell Hartley has been doing strong work as psycho Jordan, it’s kind of ruined for me by the lack of any explanation for how someone who is as clearly disturbed as Jordan is was released as same and ready to re-join society.
But I have to say, outside of almost anything Vivian did, I thought Friday’s episode was really nice and moving. All of the scenes with Julie and Doug were very sweet and moving. But I actually got most emotional watching Lani try to cope with having accidentally shot Stefan. Sal Stowers did a great job channeling genuine remorse, and those are the kinds of scenes that are pretty foundational on soaps and tend to be missing lately on this show. You had Abe comforting his daughter, so there was history and family connection, but you also had a character who is good and virtuous being sad about having hurt or potential killed a character she clearly dislikes and thinks is a bad person. On many occasions like this, at least lately, it seems like the majority of characters kind of shrug their shoulders and say what a shame, and that’s the extent of anyone feeling bad about something happening to a character like Stefan. Lani’s already showed more concern for Stefan in one episode than literally everyone combined cared about Ted being killed.October 7, 2019 at 7:17 pm #1203126837
I really enjoyed Robin Strasser’s last scenes being with Kassie DePaiva (: I actually thought it would have been quite apt for Eve to leave with Vivian, and I thought I had read that Kassie was leaving the show yet again, but she is going to be stirring things up some more instead. I just wish it was over Frankie rather than Jack!
I would be quite happy to see Bill Hayes get an Emmy nomination for his work in this storyline arc. He may very well be the oldest Emmy nominee ever if it were to happen!
Part of my problem with soaps is that nobody is ever dead (except for Alan and A.J. on GH), so we can never really get too worked up about anyone’s impending death, esp. with Dr. Rolfe in town. imo soaps got too sci-fi for me and I preferred more realistic (within the confines of soap opera) type of story-telling that I grew up watching on soaps. I watch the 1978 episodes of The Doctors and there are no sci-fi plots (there will be in the 1982 episodes, but that’s a long way from now).
With Stefan and Chad gone where will they go from here story-wise?October 7, 2019 at 8:46 pm #1203126909
Robin Strasser is done as Vivian??? Woohoo!!! Good Riddance. Robin Strasser is a great actress, but there’s only one Vivian. If Louise Sorel didn’t want to return as Vivian Alamain, they should’ve let Vivian stay dead.October 8, 2019 at 8:07 am #1203127600
I love Robin Strasser as well, and honestly I was fine with her playing a campy, short-term Vivian. But they also had her be an impulsive loose cannon, which is out of character (when Vivian gets crazy, it’s weeks of planning for that crazy), AND involved her in scenes that ideally would have been taken seriously. Her presence has really stuck out in what have otherwise been a couple of good episodes grounded in emotion and loss. It was nice to see Strasser and Kassie DePaiva have a somewhat heartfelt exchange, and I also thought Eve was just going to leave town with Vivian. I suppose I’d just assumed they were out of story for Eve, but I’m happy for her to stick around and fight with Jennifer and Jack.
The other thing that’s a little tough is Gabi’s extreme grief over Stefan’s condition. The show didn’t really give Gabi and Stefan enough time as a pair for me to feel the full impact of how tragic this is for her, though I think Camila Banus was excellent on yesterday’s show. There were a lot of strong performances yesterday: Kristian Alfonso, Bill Hayes, Sal Stowers, Lamon Archey. I thought the scenes where Hope and Eli are begging Doug to let them take Julie back to the hospital were fantastic.
Once the drama surrounding Stefan’s death and Julie’s heart is settled, I’m not sure what exactly Gabi will do. She’ll probably be involved with Chad and Abigail once they get back, but I think that’s still a couple of months away. She, Kate and Kristen may all continue to struggle over who runs DiMera, although I don’t need to see that. Kristen and Gabi just generally fighting over DiMera money and power is kind of appealing though. Like, I’m not sure why Kristen is still living at the Salem Inn rather than insisting on moving back into the mansion.October 14, 2019 at 8:45 am #1203136003
The show has had some pretty strong episodes and very strong performances over the last week or so. Camila Banus has been really good at selling Gabi’s heartache and anger, and some of her scenes have been really electric. I liked the contrast on Friday of her berating Lani versus spending every moment she has with what’s left of Stefan. Sal Stowers was good in those scenes as well.
I suppose I shouldn’t complain because I’m glad Hope is getting something more to do with this Rolfe thing that’s now going on with her, but very odd to put her in this, I guess I’ll say compromised, state just when she should be with the other Hortons celebrating Julie getting another chance to live.October 14, 2019 at 7:42 pm #1203136941
I hate when characters say…”I can only imagine” in reference to someone’s pain…cause most of the characters have already been through that pain. Ciara said that to Ben when she was talking about Gabi and Stefan…and all I could think…you’ve been through it…with Bo and Caroline!
