I loved the scenes with Paul and Christine in the park the other day. It was so nice too see an older couple relax and enjoy each other without the drama. I feel like JG is trying to add more romance to the show.
I hope we continue to get more scenes like that with Paul and Christine and the Baldwin’s.June 20, 2019 at 11:36 am #1202945761
Tried to get through the first half hour of Y&R today but found myself totally bored ): IDK why I haven’t been enjoying the show very much lately? The acting is fine but the writing just isn’t doing much for me as a viewer. I am not feeling compelled to watch, which I certainly have felt at different times in the past.July 1, 2019 at 9:51 am #1202957865
I am attempting to get through the first half hour of Y&R today and finding myself quite bored ): Why do I simply not enjoy Devon at all? I’ve never particularly liked him ): I am glad to see Michelle Stafford back in her iconic role as Phyllis though and her scene with Kevin (Greg Rikaart) is enjoyable. Otherwise… not really enjoying the show lately ):
Are others enjoying it and if so why?July 2, 2019 at 9:51 am #1202959211
I haven’t watched in some time, but I kind of want to dip back in and check out Michelle Stafford’s and Greg Rikaart’s returns. I’m also curious about the new Adam, but I have always disliked Chelsea as a character, so that’s a deterrent. I remember the show being pretty fun around this time last year: Hilary’s July 4th special episode, Kyle showing off more than just the latest products from Jabot after going on camera without his swimwear, Abby and Arturo having one silly fight after another.July 9, 2019 at 7:12 am #1202967596
The best thing about the show right now is the return of Michelle Stafford’s Phyllis! (: The scene between Phyllis and Paul was crackling with energy and verve! (:
Chelsea’s husband didn’t last long! (; I do wish they would put Sharon back with true love Nick though. Another Adam/Chelsea/Nick triangle isn’t all that great a thing imo.
Some of the characters are so incredibly dull my eyes glaze over and my ears close shut! (; It can be a slog getting through the first half hour of the show ):July 15, 2019 at 9:16 am #1202975726
For a series with the word Young in its title, there a lot of characters looking quite old.July 31, 2019 at 9:23 am #1203003840
In thinking about who the leads are on the show in 2019 I would definitely place Eric Braeden, Mark Grossman, and Jason Thompson there. Peter Bergman always is in lead but he hasn’t had all that much material this year. Joshua Morrow feels borderline lead to me. Michael Mealor has had story, as has Jordi Vilasuso, but they both feel like they belong in supporting more than lead for me.
For actresses certainly Sharon Case, but who else? Question marks for almost everybody: Amelia Heinle? Melody Thomas Scott? The actress who plays Lola (she has gotten a huge amount of screen time)? Gina Tognoni? Michelle Stafford? They all feel borderline lead/supporting to me…
I had mixed feelings about Jason Thompson’s performances on recent episodes; yes, he’s a terrific actor but for me he simply has never been and never could be Billy Abbott. So he has the technique but not the soul of the character – at least that’s how I feel about it. (and I do wonder: will Billy Miller return to his role on Y&R after he leaves GH?)August 5, 2019 at 4:24 pm #1203011769
– Grossman, Thompson, Morrow, Bergman and Braeden as lead actor
– Case, Heinle, Stafford and Tognoni as lead actress (would they push both Phyllises in the same category?)
When talking strongest shots for supporting pre-noms or noms:
– James, Mealor, and Vilasuso for supporting actor (curious if they’ll push Rikaart here since he may also get a push for DOOL)
– Maitland, Khalil and maybe Adams for supporting actress (though could Davidson get in here?)August 5, 2019 at 4:34 pm #1203011781
I thought Bryton James was Lead…….August 9, 2019 at 5:21 am #1203017130
Is anybody enjoying the show right now? I watch the first half hour and find myself bored bored bored ): I still love the characters and actors but I am not finding the stories compelling at the moment. IDK why but I don’t care about this Christian custody story. I personally find Devon incredibly boring. I want Dina’s story. I want Traci’s story. I want Michael to get a strong storyline of his own. While I am enjoying Michelle Stafford’s return I need a more exciting story for her. Jason Thompson has been getting praised for his performances but I am not excited by his story or his performances. Perhaps in time the show will get better but right now it’s a snoozefest as far as I am concerned ):August 9, 2019 at 5:45 am #1203017191
It’s kind of all over the place right now. It’s a bit boring but tolerable. I’m into B&B right now due to them wrapping up the Baby Swap storyline.August 10, 2019 at 9:16 pm #1203019100
When Mal Young was writing Y&R, my biggest complaint was the lack of veracity when writing for certain longterm characters. Unfortunately, I still have that issue with Josh Griffith’s writing. His character misses are a bit more subtle than Young’s, but he definitely focuses too much on negative behaviors and unpleasant relationships. Rooting value is absolutely critical to the success of a soap, and that appears to be lost on the current set of writers.
Since Adam’s story is dominating the show’s air time, I will start there. Mark Grossman is doing an excellent job mixing it up with many long-term veterans. I have read a good bit of criticism because the Justin Hartley years seem to have been erased, evoking the image of Bobby Ewing stepping out of the shower and telling Pam he had the strangest dream. It is very jarring stepping back in time five or six years for no apparent reason. But even more important is that the story is incredibly boring. I have railed against the idea of bringing back Adam, and this is exactly why. It’s all so unpleasant, and not in an entertaining way.
I am thrilled to have Michelle Stafford back. Her acting choices are so uniquely hers. It’s like she never left. Phyllis is a role that should never be recast.
I like Nate and Abby together. I would like to see more of them.
I hope Kevin comes back if for no other reason than i love to watch any scene with Kevin and Michael. Leblanc and Rikaart work so well together.
Michael Mealor continues to do a great job as Kyle. However, I could not care less what Kyle did in New York. Boring.
I am very puzzled by Jason Thompson’s current story. What is the point? I didn’t enjoy the story of Delia’s death, and I am not enjoying this retrogressive revisitation.
When Young left, he had finally upped the diversity quotient and brought the “young” back to the show. We seem to now be focusing mainly on older rich white folks.
Freeman, I know you want to see more of Dina, but I don’t. The Abbotts are rich and can hire others to do all the grunt work. What about people of limited means who can’t afford to hire help? I pretty much hate the Dina story at this point.
I am glad that Traci is back on the canvas. I always loved the friendship between Katherine and Nikki. I think it would be great if Traci and Mariah developed a similar friendship. Traci needs to becomes the grand dame of Y&R, and Mariah needs a bigger storyline.
I do enjoy the resurrection of the old music themes. I actually remember quite a few of them. However, I wish they would use them more often.
Overall, Y&R has turned most of their characters into a bunch of rich, spoiled, nasty brats with no rooting value. On top of that, the show is extremely boring.August 11, 2019 at 3:44 am #1203019232
Excellent analysis robbalto! It helped me to see why I am not enjoying the show very much. I think for me I enjoy Marla Adams’s performances so much that I don’t mind the issues you have brought up – but without Ashley on the canvas the story loses it’s potency ):
The only other thing is that I don’t care for Abby and Nate together. The only time I have ever really enjoyed Abby was in the Dina storyline early last year.
I was just discussing on my The Doctors FB page the lack of rootability on today’s shows vs. old soaps, where there was tremendous rootability and also the villains were not kept on the show forever, they would get their comeuppances and new villains (and villainesses) would come along to create obstacles for the heroes and heroines!
Making Adam younger has been too jarring for me. The actor is good but he isn’t Adam to me. I keep on expecting him to turn out to be an imposter!
I do enjoy Michelle Stafford and hope they give her a stronger storyline soon. I am so glad the real Phyllis has returned!August 19, 2019 at 5:28 am #1203029664
I was reading that last week’s ratings for Y&R were it’s all time lowest ever! I am finding the show to be a snoozefest so I am not terribly surprised. The huge shakeup and changes hasn’t worked but only because the writing choices have been terrible and they are emphasizing the wrong stories. I think it can bounce back, maybe they need a new headwriter? (I am available!) (;
