Let’s all do some getting-to-know-you. In the spirit of fostering some community over here:
What’s your favorite daytime show?
Mine is and alwyas has been Days of our Lives, though there have been many, many other great shows on the landscape of daytime television.
Anybody else?May 23, 2011 at 4:57 am #416960
This has changed from time to time, but of all-time i’d say “One Life To Live” is my favorite. At one point I would have said “Loving” but ultimately, “OLTL” is my all-time favorite soap.May 24, 2011 at 4:52 pm #416961
Mine has always been “The Young and the Restless”. The years since the great William Bell died have been disappointing, but in its prime Y&R was appointment TV. I remember when every episode ended feeling like it was an eternity until the next day. Currently, I have felt the same way about “One Life to Live”, and I think it’s the best soap on the air right now. Y&R has been gradually improving, and I’ll never entirely give up on it, but OLTL is the can’t-wait-to-get-home-and-watch-it soap for me right now.May 25, 2011 at 2:59 pm #416962
I have an underdog complex, so One Life to Live has been my favorite for almost as long as I was watching it, going back to the mid-late ’90s. I think it started with the storyline where Jessica got pregnant but lost her baby when she was hit by a car that Dorian was driving. That was the storyline that really made me stop and take notice, and since then there have only been a couple of major dips in quality: most of the Megan McTavish period, and much of the stunt-heavy Dena Higley period as well. Plus, OLTL has introduced some of my favorite characters of the last ten years, like Marcie Walsh (Kathy Brier) and Evangeline Williamson (Renee Elise Goldsberry).May 25, 2011 at 4:07 pm #416963
The first soap I ever watched was DAYS, during the height of the original “Buried Alive” story. I also watched Another World, but decided to try out an ABC soap and I was qucikly hooked on OLTL. However, I would go on to fall in love with GH during the Claire Labine years and it remained my all time favorite for a long time. But I have been so dissapointed in it for quite a while. Over the years I starting watching AMC, Y&R, B&B and ATWT. However, I have to say that my all time favorite soap, the one that has kept me entertained and most passionate about the genre is One Life To Live.May 29, 2011 at 6:14 am #416964
Of all-time, my favorite soap is Santa Barbara. No soap has ever matched the intensity of love that I had for SB. They had the greatest, most unique characters (Augusta, Keith, Gina, Flame, Mason, and Julia to name some standouts), the greatest love story ever told on soaps IMO (Cruz & Eden), the greatest patriarch and matriarch in all of soaps (CC & Sophia), episodes I’ll never forget (Mary’s death by a Giant letter “C”, Lionel’s “funeral” where his “ashes” spilled and the Capwell maid started cleaning them up with a dust buster, CC’s fake funeral where Keith stuck him with a pin in the casket & he howled & sat right up), smart & frightening villains (Kirk & Elena), the most well-written courtroom sequences I’ve ever witnessed on a soap, the most beautiful wedding in the history of soaps (Cruz & Eden), the most original wedding vows ever spoken (Mason reading his grocery list to Julia), the strongest dialogue in the business, and the most rich, involving bible and backstory a soap was ever based on. They also had the most realistic depiction of rape I’ve ever seen and the strongest performance even given in a rape storyline (Marcy Walker). Yes, the last year was dreadful, but the blame for that can be laid strictly on Pam Long & Paul Rauch. But overall, it was a brilliant show that was ahead of its time and all those Best Drama Series Emmys were much deserved.
Another World was another long-time favorite of mine and would be a close 2nd, followed by Y&R (from ’92-’05, I started watching in ’92). After that would come Loving, the little soap that could, and As The World Turns, which I only watched from 2000 til the end.May 29, 2011 at 6:23 am #416965
In my freshman year, I noticed that a lot of students gathered around the lounge area to watch a soap. It was The Young and The Restless.
That was ages ago, and I still try to keep up with it. I dont watch it every day, and sometimes I get lost with the storyline. But I’m a huge fan of the show, warts and all.May 30, 2011 at 2:45 pm #416966
Currently DOOL is my favorite, though at times it is just awful. However, it is home to me. I started watching DOOL and Another World with my Mom. I mourned for years over the cancellation of AW. I have watched Y&R since it debuted. For sheer beauty and the ability to evoke strong emotions I would have to say Santa Barbara is at the top of my soap list. Only in it’s waning days did I turn it off. The introduction of Jack Wagner and Sydney Penny and their wretched sl ruined the show for me. Give me CC, Sophia, Cruz and Eden, Robert and Kelly any day. I adored Gina and Keith. I also loved Julia and Mason with Augusta plotting in the background. The sets were grandiose, the music soaring, the scenery breathtaking and the plots were wonderful. SB was a gem of the soap world that was destroyed by the demon Brian Frons. He should be forever known as the soap killer. He has a long history of it.May 31, 2011 at 4:58 pm #416967
Currently, the only soaps I watch are Y&R and DAYS. I’ve watched DAYS since 1982 (I was 3 yrs old but I remember the stories) and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Never once I have given up on DAYS entirely.
Y&R, I was HOOKED on when I started watching in ’92. I had moved to St. Louis that year and they aired Y&R at 4 PM, so I never missed it. From ’92-’05, Y&R was appointment TV. It used to be so gothic, with that almost creepy background music. My favorite character was and always will be Jill Abbott- Jess Walton is my shit and if Y&R ever dumped her, I’d probably give it up entirely. The Latham years were pretty bad, as she stripped the show of its identity. Josh Griffith wasn’t much better, until MAB came aboard. Her first year was pretty awesome and I was HOOKED on the show all over again. But somewhere along the way, it all fell apart, probably when she brought Sheffer and Hamner on board. I LOVED Sheffer’s work on ATWT and thought he had potential on DAYS, had nobody interfered (which they did). But Y&R is a HORRIBLE choice for him and his writing will NEVER work on this show. He’d be better suited for B&B.
This all brings me to ATWT. I watched ATWT a bit on & off in the 90s, mainly for the Carly/Mike pairing and Maura West. But it never completely grabbed me. Even in ’99, I sampled it when the AW characters crossed over, but didn’t quite get hooked. Enter Hogan Sheffer in ’00 and a dip in quality for OLTL. Man, I got addicted to the show SO fast- the cast of characters was amazing and put even Y&R and DAYS to shame. Katie’s comeuppance at the Endicott Awards remains one of my favorite soap moments of all-time. I was in love with ATWT all the way through summer ’06, when the quality declined. I still watched, but it wasn’t quite the same. Then, in early ’09, somehow, the show found its footing and I fell in love with it all over again. With Y&R being so bad, it became MY soap once again (DAYS was pretty good in this time period as well, so I had a 1-3 PM block). All the way up to the end, I was in love with my show and was deeply saddened when news of its cancellation surfaced. It was like losing SB and AW all over again. For my money, it was the best soap of 2010, which makes it suck all the more that its not among the Best Drama Series Emmy nominees (it was FAR better than AMC & Y&R and deserved one of their slots). No soap on the air comes close to even touching ATWT in terms of quality for me.August 22, 2012 at 9:46 am #416968
I think Soaps are overratedAugust 22, 2012 at 7:52 pm #416969
Of all-time OLTL for sure, but now that it is gone, I guess by default, GH.August 23, 2012 at 2:48 am #416970
Currently, its Y&R basically just by default. Of all time, it’s a tie between Y&R and GH but OLTL, AMC, and Another World all have a special place in my heart.August 23, 2012 at 7:29 am #416971
