Every year we debate hard about who will win Lead Actress and every year the person who actually wins is the person who none of you think will win (I’ve always gotten this award right). What people need to realize is that the person who has the most controlled range and not so over the top usually wins. With that being said, who do you all think will win this year and why (you have to put a reason why)? Maura West, Katherine Kelly, Heather Tom, Finola Hughes, or Arianne Zucker.May 30, 2020 at 2:50 am #1203508535
I disagree with you: it is usually the most over the top actress who wins – not always, but most of the time. I would need to know what each actress has submitted and we haven’t learned that yet.
I think Maura West will win this year. It’s been five years since her last Emmy win and she crafts well thought out reels, regardless of whether she wins or not, they always tell a story. It’s her 12th nomination and it would be her 4th win.
I will be upset if Heather Tom wins yet again. I find her to be incredibly boring and uninteresting. I have never liked her. This is my bias for certain. She has already won 5 Emmys, 3 for playing Katie Logan – enough already!
I really want to see Arianne Zucker’s full reel. I suspect she will submit at least in part her work not as Nicole Walker but her portrayal of Kristen DiMera – will voters understand what is going on? Her very best scenes for which she deserves to win an Emmy were when “Nicole” (Kristen) was lashing out in grief over the “death” of her daughter Holly – how will these scenes play if they are in her reel? I would love for her to win.
Finola Hughes is always excellent but for me her work in 2019 really didn’t WOW me. I really don’t understand her nomination. Again, seeing her reel would be enormously helpful. Crafting an excellent reel can matter more than whether you deserve to win or not.
I didn’t see enough of Katherine Kelly Lang’s work but what I did see seemed to be constant arguing between Brooke and Ridge. All of her scenes are repeats, she has played them a million times before, but they may play better in a reel than they do for me having seen her do these same scenes endlessly for years and years. She would be this year’s Jacqueline MacInnes Wood; completely unexpected winner (only JMW is a much better actress imo).
Rooting for Maura or Arianne to win. Looking forward to reading and seeing their reels.June 1, 2020 at 9:00 am #1203511713
Yeah, now that we know that at least some part of the reels will be made available, I’m going to wait and see. I was surprised by JMW’s win last year, but I think that’s mostly because I couldn’t see the reels. The last time I was really surprised by the winner in this category was Laura Wrigth’s win, which was the last time I hadn’t seen the reels. (Even though I had Gina Tognoni pretty far down the year she won and didn’t think she had the strongest reel by far, she actually was the consensus choice of people in the forum, so it was clear she had a good shot.)
Without seeing reels, my guess is that Maura or Arianne have the best chances. I’m pretty sure Ari said she’d submitted scenes from when Holly “died,” which I don’t think would be enough to seal the deal, but it depends on what else she submitted. Maura’s got excellent material, but she sometimes falls into the trap of submitting reels that play as over the top. I do think people tend to get bored of Heather Tom, but she’s solid. If they actually wrote Finola a good story, her chances should be excellent, and I recognize I’m biased because I don’t like Peter, but I don’t remember her having anything that would play well. KKL has had years where fans have raved about her work, but I don’t remember anyone talking much about her this past year. But I think with everything happening with Thomas and Hope last year, she probably did have new angles to play and not just the same old drama of swapping make-out partners.June 2, 2020 at 8:15 pm #1203513712
In a just world, Katherine Kelly Lang would win, hands down. Of all the nominees, she arguably had the most emotionally complex material to play, and like a true champ, she rose to the occasion and gave some of the best, most nuanced performances of her career.June 8, 2020 at 9:00 am #1203521551
I have noticed that Arianne Zucker’s nomination is for portraying Nicole Walker – but it is my understanding that she submitted material when she was portraying Kristen DiMera!!!! I would love to see her whole clip and see if there is any material from later on when she was playing Nicole again but from what I have read her reel is exclusively from when she was Kristen in a mask pretending to be Nicole! Not now
