SOD has released the show’s casting call for the character. The character is set to be de-aged (35-40) and Emmy nominee Kelly Sullivan (ex-Connie/Kate) is rumored to assume the role from LaStafford.

1. I’m 100% annoyed that daytime television continues to de-age characters. It’s more insulting than “back from the dead”, “evil twins”, or “who’s the daddy” repeats. It’s disgusting. All it says to the performers is “go ahead and leave and we’ll recast you with someone younger.” Absurd. Phyllis is a grandmother and should be in her mid-to-late 40s.
2. I’m willing to overcome #1 if Sullivan really gets the part. She does have the chops to do Phyllis well. Much better than bland ole Robin Christopher or that hack Jamie Lunar. Neither of those women have the gut-wrenching abilities that Sullivan does. Just my opinion of course.
3. The news that they are just NOW looking for a recast is almost as upsetting as #1 above. They should have been looking for months. They need to get on the ball, get this role casted and bring Phyllis back to GC.
4. What does Stafford’s newfound home on GH say about TPTB @ Y&R? Obviously, they’re agists, so did Michelle feel that she wouldn’t be respected by the “new” brass? One has to wonder why JFP could not secure Stafford.May 7, 2014 at 1:45 pm #426542
I was hoping that Kelly Sullivan would be cast in the role of Phyllis, so I hope this happens. I’ve been watching daytime since I was four years old and have accepted that casting is different than in any other medium – SORAS’ed children, de-aged adults, and in the case of Blair Cramer, she went from being eurasian to caucasian! I don’t see the point of recasting the role. Phyllis was not a well-written character for the last several years of Stafford’s run. Unless the writers have an incredible storyline vision, I think it’s a bad move. Although recasts can work for some, this is one better left alone. Y&R should focus on other characters and stories.May 7, 2014 at 4:49 pm #426544
I hear Victoria Rowell is in the running to be the new Phyliss…May 7, 2014 at 5:39 pm #426545
Frankly, Phyllis needs to be played by an actress who is closer to Michelle’s age, not Kelly Sullivan. Frankly, I think this is a bad move. Leaving Phyllis off the canvas for awhile would be a better choice. IMHO, Stafford’s leaving freed Y&R up to expand other characters stories and opened up a lot of screentime that Phyllis often took up…
I just don’t think this is the right move.May 7, 2014 at 5:40 pm #426546
I also think this is in direct retalliation to Stafford joining GH… clearly Phelps holds some ill-will at GH for her firing.May 7, 2014 at 6:17 pm #426547
I feel like recasting Phyllis is a going to be tough to do successfully because (a) I think people miss the actress not the character, (b) the show hasn’t been much worse in Phyllis’s absence, and (c) Y&R is already on shaky ground and can’t afford to upset their fans.
Cynthia Watros would have been a great choice because her acting style and physicality is like Stafford’s, and she’s age appropriate.
Kelly Sullivan, Robin Christopher, and Jamie Luner all have their pros and cons. I would love to see KSu take a stab at this role, and she would bring a fan base with her which Y&R desperately needs. RC can be an awesome actress, but I can’t see her being loud like Stafford and I’d rather see her on GH anyway. I love Jamie Luner, but her fans on Daytime are few and far between, and again, I don’t think Y&R can afford to offend too many people. On the other hand though, she would be much more suited to Phyllis than she was Liza so fans may be more supportive.
There are other names floating around, like Sarah Buxton, Sarah Brown, and Tamara Braun. I don’t care for Buxton, and I think the other two look too young, even if they decide to de-age the character.
Lesli Kay would be an interesting choice too. She’s versatile enough to play almost anything, and she’s one of the few non-working Daytime actors right now who has a screen-presence that could match Stafford’s. She also had an interesting dynamic with Cady McClain on ATWT.

As always, gdfl, you bring up some interesting sames. I wouldn’t have thought of Leslie Kay because she just looks so different from Stafford.
I saw the news that Y&R was recasting Phyllis yesterday, but I hadn’t seen that Kelly Sullivan was the frontrunner. I could get on board with giving that a try. I didn’t really like what I saw of Sullivan on GH, but that’s because I didn’t like the campiness and extremes and shifting with the Kate/Connie personalities. She’s clearly got a lot of talent and a big fanbase, so I would be supportive of that. Brown, Braun, and Buxton don’t seem like good fits to me, and we’ve talked about RC and JL before.
De-aging characters always bothers me, too, especially when it’s explicit as in this case. I’d be much less bothered if the casting announcement just went for a wide net and asked for 35-50. The idea of a 35-year-old Phyllis is kind of insane. Good thing Daniel isn’t in Genoa City. The funny thing is that Y&R also has a few kids who were aged what seems like a lot in a short time and now, for a person who maybe didn’t watch for a few years, seem way too old, like Noah and Abby. Anyway, I still like Rebecca Budig for the role, but she’s now actually older than the range they’re asking for, which is funny because we’d said before she looks too young. Of course, now that she’s pregnant she’s not really an option anyway.
I would say Y&R is only now recasting Phyllis because they were hopeful they could get Stafford back. When she popped up on GH, it was clear that wasn’t happening. Writing Phyllis back in with a younger recast would seem like an extreme means of payback, if that’s what it is. While I do think it’s true that people are missing Stafford more than Phyllis, I think an exciting new Phyllis would be a great thing for the show. Focusing on other characters and stories doesn’t seem to be working out so great. In my recent viewing, there wasn’t a single storyline that I wouldn’t have found more interesting and enjoyable if Phyllis had been involved somehow, and the show is excellent at involving Phyllis in everything.May 8, 2014 at 3:05 pm #426549
Not a huge Sullivan fan. Kay would be an interesting choice. But if we are going to use former ATWT stars, I’d submit Kelly Menighan Hensley for the part. Younger than Stafford, but older than Sullivan and she could handle the ebbs and flows of the part.May 8, 2014 at 3:57 pm #426550
Casting younger is wrong because Phyllis works much better as part of the older crowd of the show not the younger crowd. She belongs with the jacks and jills and Paul’s and not the youngersMay 8, 2014 at 4:18 pm #426551
I found Sullivan to be highly over rated during her time on GH but most of it may not have been her fault since her whole storyline was such a cartoon and it was painful to even watch.May 8, 2014 at 8:14 pm #426552
Jensen Buchanan would be good choice.May 8, 2014 at 8:54 pm #426553
Come on JFP. Forget this de-age crap and call Robin Christopher.May 9, 2014 at 8:19 am #426554
Well, since we’re still throwing names out, Allan’s mention of KMH, who I wouldn’t have thought of, made me think of her fellow P&G alum Beth Ehlers, who I think could make it work.
It would be fun to see Jensen Buchanan somewhere, but I cannot see her as Phyllis.
I also like BTN’s point. If they de-age Phyllis and then put her with the youngers, they would probably be better off just creating someone new. I mean, I’m sure they want to capitalize on the drama with Sharon being responsible for her ending up in the coma, but since Stafford won’t be there for it anyway, I don’t think having Phyllis be around for it is all that necessary. It’ll actually have a more dramatic effect if Phyllis is still in the coma when everyone finds out rather than awake and recovered/recovering.
