Marisa Tomei won the award in a race that could have gone to anyone.
Judy Davis – Husbands and Wives
Miranda Richardson – Damage
Joan Plowright – Enchanted April
Vanessa Redgrave – Howards End
I would have voted for Vanessa Redgrave’s utterly moving and evocative turn as Mrs. Ruth Wilcox.

Richardson ruled that year, she was in The Crying Game and Enchanted April as well.

ReplyCopy URLMay 29, 2021 at 6:32 am #1204277542It’s a difficult choice but I would’ve gone with Judy Davis, who was an absolute force of nature in Husbands and Wives. But Vanessa Redgrave was absolutely hypnotising in Howard’s End in what was the definition of a scene stealing supporting performance, so I’d have been equally happy for her to have taken it.

May 29, 2021 at 11:49 am #12042779251. Judy Davis, Husbands and Wives
2. Miranda Richardson, Damage
3. Marisa Tomei, My Cousin Vinny
4. Joan Plowright, Enchanted April
5. Vanessa Redgrave, Howards EndHonorable Mentions
Helena Bonham Carter, Howards End
Alfre Woodard, Passion FishI had my issues with Husbands and Wives but Davis is AMAZING and she likely lost due to the backlash of the director at the time. As mentioned by various posters above, Richardson was having a stellar year and her major scene in Damage is shattering. Tomei is WORTHY and she makes me smile every time she’s on screen. I’m surprised so many people are drawn towards Redgrave in Howards End. I’ve always felt she was a glorified cameo and only was nominated because she was a name check. I need to revisit this film to re-evaluate her brief performance. I would have easily nominated Bonham Carter from the same film, as I felt she was the perfect actress for that role opposite Emma Thompson. Alfre Woodward SHOULD have also been nominated for her stunning and subtle work as the caring and complex Chantelle.
