A tie among all the other four.

Tomei deserved her win… People really underestimate the difficulty of comedy.

She didn’t win because voters see comedy as a challenge.

Tomei’s win was legendary. I’m still amazed that the Academy had the balls to do something like that.

    It’s supporting actress.

Richardson and Redgrave were extremely good. Tomei’s performance was delightful in a somewhat sitcom-y kind of way, very funny but also cliched and campy. Nuanced is a lot harder to do than camp. The same reason why I’d pick Joan Allen for Nixon over Mira Sorvino for The Mighty Aphrodite in 1995 any day. Alfred Woodard really is a co-lead actress in Passion Fish.

BUT Judy Davis had one of the Best Supporting Actress performances in the 90s with Husbands and Wives, if not the best. To me, it’s not even close.

For the nominations, I’d replace Joan Plowright with Helena Bonham Carter (Howards End).

    1. Davis
    2. Tomei
    3. Redgrave
    4. Richardson
    5. Plowright

Davis for sure, but I’m not one little bit mad with Tomei’s getting it.

*Sigh* If Plowright had to only have one nomination I wish it had been for “I Love You To Death”.
