Helena Bonham Carter, The Wings of the Dove

    Julie Christie, Afterglow

Obviously Dench deserved to win, then we’d never have had to award her for that ridiculous cameo.

I concur Grier was snubbed that year, and Billy Connolly, heck even DiCaprio gave a memorable performance. Alison Elliott also outshone Bonham Carter in the same movie, as much as she deserved her nom.

    FYC:

Swinton, Weerasethakul Memoria, (Best Actress, Director)
Efira, Rampling, Wilson Benedetta (Best Actress, Supporting Actress/Actor)
    Rapace Lamb (Best Actress)
Stewart, Hawkins, Spall Spencer (Best Actress, Supporting Actress/Actor)

Had voting occurred now, Kate would’ve probably won. Best Picture winner + Huge B.O. + young ingénue + iconic final scene.

I would have voted for Helena Bonham Carter, in The Wings of the Dove. She was heartbreaking and won a few of the critics prizes that year. I’m not against Hunt’s win, but I wouldn’t have voted for her. Hunt was good but I never really thought she had romantic chemistry with Nicholson and I preferred her scenes with Kinnear. I’m glad she was rewarded despite being more of a known presence on television.

I’m actually fond of all of the performances, even Christie in the uneven Afterglow. Dench would have been my runner-up and I still would have preferred her to win for this rather than the Shakespeare cameo. Winslet was serviceable but it is actually one of her weaker performances for me. I think that has more to do with the role and screenplay rather than her dedication. Titanic is a major achievement but I wouldn’t consider any of the acting to be win-worthy.

    1. Bonham Carter
    2. Dench
    3. Christie
    4. Hunt
    5. Winslet

    Honorable Mentions
Julia Roberts, My Best Friend’s Wedding
    Pam Grier, Jackie Brown
    Jodie Foster , Contact

Pam Grier should’ve made it in over Christie.

    Kate Winslet.

Dench deserved/deserves a best actress win in her long career though.

I never had issue with Hunt performance. But I recently rewatched As good as it gets and it doesn’t hold up as well. Woke culture would of destroyed Nicholson character now a day.

I remember correctly at the time of nominations That most thought Kate wasn’t that good in Titanic.

Judi Dench was robbed of this win.

I also concur that Pam Grier should’ve been nominated and also Susanne Lothar for FUNNY GAMES.

Also, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen it but I’d also consider Sarah Polley for THE SWEET HEREAFTER.
