It crushed me to not be able to nominate Julia Roberts for Erin Brockokivich and Marion Cotillard in La Vie En Rose.

Unfortunately the academy only nominated Lynch in director for it. Naomi Watts was one of performers (if not the performer) most robbed of a nomination this century.

Catherine Zeta Jones is easily supporting. It’s Roxie’s story from the start to finish, Velma is just a part of her story. Velma’s role isn’t that large to merit a co lead mention. The best way to determine this is see the song distribution. Roxie dominates there.

    Screentime distribution
    Catherine Zeta Jones- 26.4%
    Renee Zellwegger- 49.4%

I mean there’s literally a song at the end of the musical about how both Velma and Roxie are the leads and Zeta-Jones was nominated as a lead of the film by many groups including the HFPA…

Personally I find it more of an egregious fraud than Blanchett (whom I don’t consider to be a lead in Notes on a Scandal because the film looks through the lens of Dench’s character’s voyeurism) because Velma is written into the musical as a co-lead. The biggest sub-plot in it as about how Roxie and Velma are two shades of the same coin both having the same ambition, rivalling for press attention and being similarly criminal personalities. Screen-time does not always equate to narrative prominence or define whether a category is lead or supporting.

I get your point but having seen both Chicago the musical live and Chicago the movie, I’d argue that the musical is where both are co leads but the movie version takes the focus to Roxie more than it does to Velma. I think the Globes placement is due to the fact that in this scenario of category confusion, they went with the musical’s placement while others went with **cough* Harvey’s **cough** placement. I mean it’s now upto every individual to decide. While you consider all three in The Favourite and Velma to be leads, I consider Colman and Velma as supporting. One major criteria which compelled me to classify Catherine Zeta Jones as Supporting was that I was sure Richard Gere is supporting in the film and personally to me, both Gere’s character and Velma were key parts of Roxie’s life along with Latifah and C’Reilly. I mean Roxie had one supporting charachter completely to advance her story (C Reilly) which Velma didn’t have while both Velma and Roxie shared Latifah and Gere’s characters to advance their plots. I see Chicago as Roxie Hart’s fall and subsequent rise while one might see it as a look into the different perfomers in Chicago. If Zeta Jones is lead, there is also an argument for Gere to be lead and contrary to who was placed where, I strongly think both are ornaments to Roxie’s story. Personal opinion.

Can we all agree though that Michael Sheen was Lead in The Queen despite the BAFTA placement?
