Best/Favorite Best Picture winner of the 70s(1970-1979)???
The greatest decade ever of BP winners and in cinema history.
Vote in the poll and comment.Tomorrow i’ll do the 50s, then the 40s, the 30s, and finally the 20s.
ReplyMarch 25, 2021 at 6:55 am #1204157334I can’t not vote for The Godfather out of those, but it is an incredible decade for BP winners. Virtually every year has multiple masterpieces in its line-up as well – ’75, in particular, is maybe the strongest ever year – Cuckoo’s Nest, Barry Lyndon, Jaws, Nashville, Dog Day Afternoon.

ReplyCopy URLMarch 25, 2021 at 8:05 am #1204157473I always used to say that I found both Godfather movies to be overrated but I actually rewatched both of them (I would prefer to forget the existence of the third one) and I finally found myself in agreement that both were masterpieces.
I also agree with Gorman that 1975 was a stellar year…even if I might’ve nominated a couple of different films. Those 5 easily make what might be the greatest BP lineup of all time for me.
#1-The Godfather
#2-The Godfather Part II
#3-Annie Hall#4-The Deer Hunter (should’ve been AN UNMARRIED WOMAN)
#5-One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (should’ve been DOG DAY AFTERNOON)#6-Kramer vs. Kramer (should’ve been ALL THAT JAZZ or APOCALYSPE NOW)
#7-Patton (should’ve been FIVE EASY PIECES)#8-The Sting (should’ve been CRIES & WHISPERS)
#9-The French Connection (should’ve been A CLOCKWORK ORANGE or THE LAST PICTURE SHOW)#10-Rocky (should’ve been TAXI DRIVER or NETWORK)

The problem with The Godfather, Part 3, is it pales to the masterpieces of the first two Godfather films. By itself, it is a decent movie. It just can’t compete with the brilliance of The Godfather and The Godfather, Part 2.
I voted for The Godfather only because I was limited to one vote. The Godfather, Part 2 is a rare sequel that is just as good as the first one and I almost voted for it. Both are masterpieces. I probably picked part 1 for the restaurant scene where Michael begins his journey in becoming The Godfather.

Props for putting that unpopular opinion out there… but lol hard no on that sentiment. Fosse over Coppola for Best Director is an all-time travesty for me.

Check out 1975 for Best Director:
Milos Forman – Cuckoo’s Nest
Fellini – Amarcord
Kubrick – Barry Lyndon
Lumet – Dog Day Afternoon
Altman – NashvilleThat’s a Murderers’ Row of Directors if I’ve ever seen one. Will probably never be topped.
