Hopkins, as good as he is, is on the third tier for me, and perhaps it is because he gives more of a casual performance than these other great film actors.

Hopkins really only hit the big time (in terms of movies) with Silence of the Lambs. He had some other hits and good performances (Magic) but he was doing a lot of terrible stuff in the 80s. (in retrospect I’m surprised they gave him the role in Silence.) He mean he was doing Jackie Collins’ trashy mini-series Hollywood Wives and Bo Derek movies. Silence turned it around for him. (he was doing acclaimed work on stage and British TV but in terms of American stuff he was basically cashing checks for a long time there before he turned it around and became a legend.)

The Elephant Man was good on his resume.

More memorable career is what Hoffman has, but nothing in his résumé that can touch Hopkins’ The Remains of the Day (and The Father) in my opinion.

Hoffman.
It’s extremely difficult for nearly any actor in cinema history to match or even beat his run of films and performances from 1967 (The Graduate) to 1988 (Rain Man).
