Is Frances McDormand really worthy of three Oscars like Meryl Streep and Daniel Day-Lewis???
She’s a great actress, but i mean is she really a Meryl or DDL type of all-time great performer that can have three Lead Actress wins???
Vote and comment.

On the one hand, it’s fair to argue that she doesn’t have the global stature and legend status of certain greats. In my opinion she is a legend and one of her generation’s best actresses. I accept she’s maybe not a Streep/ Hepburn/ DDL level icon, but I don’t think that matters and it isn’t the purpose of the Oscars. She has her three winning performances – all stunning – and a heap of other great roles and character parts.
That debate aside, all three of her performances are superb and the best of the nominees in their year in my book. Even if it seems a little jarring at first, once I looked at each year, I realised I’d have picked her each time out of the nominated five. She deserves them because of that, if nothing else, for me. Also don’t get the argument some are using that they’re all similar roles, I think there’s an incredible range on display across the three.

Three times, technically speaking.

ReplyCopy URLApril 26, 2021 at 6:50 am #1204228612It’s subjective, personally I’d not have picked her as the best any of the years she was nominated, especially since she could do this one in her sleep.

And you can also say “yes, but not for these pictures.” Who cares? Who said Streep, Day Lewis, Nicholson, Bergman, Brennan and Hepburn deserved all their Oscars for those specific pictures?
ReplyCopy URLApril 26, 2021 at 7:00 am #1204228643I think her case is more complex because I really liked all 3 performances, particularly the first two wins.
However, I’m not sure I would’ve given her the win for FARGO over Brenda Blethyn and Emily Watson…and that’s coming from someone who considers FARGO as one of his favorite films made in the last 40 years.
I do think there is more to McDormand than may meet the eye at first glance. She’s remarkable at subtle differences.
I still say her work in stuff like ALMOST FAMOUS and MISSISSIPPI BURNING is a sharp contrast to FARGO which is certainly different from THREE BILLBOARDS and NOMADLAND.

Yeah this is a good point actually. Whilst I think it’s probably her best win, they are two formidable, iconic performances. Hard to call it that year. Three Billboards is also a hard call. I actually found this year the easiest one to pick her in, oddly enough – she was the only one of the five I had in my own personal line-up, I think.
