    2006

    Penelope Cruz (Volver)
Judi Dench (Notes On A Scandal)
    Helen Mirren (The Queen)
Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada)
    Kate Winslet (Little Children)

Any of them winning would have been absolutely deserving. The fact that this is probably the only time in Oscars history that the same 5 actresses made it in at GG,CC,SAG,BAFTA,Oscar shows truly how legendary this lineup was.

Oh, I thought history had settled this topic haha. Pretty definitively ’74, right? Not a single non-banger among the nominees.

I don’t have a definitive answer and I might choose differently if I did more research, but 1951 and and 1954 come to mind immediately.

1951: Bette Davis in All About Eve, Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard and Judy Holliday in Born Yesterday are the stuff pop culture history books are made of. Even though Anne Baxter and Eleanor Parker are much weaker than them, it’s hard to top a year where three performances of such magnitude were nominated.

1954: Career-best turns from Dorothy Dandrige, Grace Kelly, Judy Garland, and Jane Wyman – plus the young Audrey Hepburn just about to blossom in earnest.

    I don’t think anyone beats 1951.

1962 with Hepburn, Davis, Page and Bancroft is fantastic.

More recently 2001 – with historic win and 4 other amazing performances, each very distinct and deserving.

    1995:

    • Susan Sarandon in Dead Man Walking
    • Meryl Streep in The Bridges of Madison County
    • Sharon Stone in Casino
    • Elisabeth Shue in Leaving Las Vegas
    • Emma Thompson in Sense and Sensibility

    1972, as previously mentioned.

And I’m also inclined to mention 1940:

    • Ginger Rogers in Kitty Foyle
    • Bette Davis in The Letter
    • Joan Fontaine in Rebecca
    • Katherine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story
    • Martha Scott in Our Town (I would say this is the only entry that is somewhat weak, but mostly because the other four are so strong)
