Think of this as a hint of things to come (when eventually the older shows end). At this stage, from shows that debuted in 2020, 2021 and are at least at filming stage, what would you chose?

Drama is really, really hard! For comedy I think I’d chose a combo of the following and wouldn’t need to go in  to unreleased

    • Ted Lasso
    • Only Murders in The Building
    • The Chair
    • The Flight Attendant
    • Reservation Dogs
    • Resident Alien
    • Hacks
    • The Great
    • Mythic Quest

Are you asking what one’s personal lineup of shows that have debuted in this decade would look like or are you asking which shows we think could break out (or sustain themselves) as Emmy players once shows that started in the previous decade like Barry and The Crown end?

FYC: Better Call Saul and The Good Fight in all categories including Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

The latter. There are a lot of shows we either know or presume are in their last season or two. I also think something like Reservation Dogs might take a year or two to get in, whilst Resident Alien could run five or six years but might need a few old shows to fall out because of the audience being a bit older.

Drama’s interesting – we’re  not far off Succession, Ozark, and The Crown ending and I suspect The Morning Show will end at three though there’s no confirmation of that. What’s emerged or looks promising that’s sustainable?

Has there been any examples of shows that got (nearly) shut out in their first seasons but the Emmys warmed up to in later seasons?

Will & Grace, Everybody Loves Raymond and Schitt’s Creek are the only ones that spring to mind, and the later two are a direct result of brand new increased viewership (changed CBS time slot and a Netflix boast, respectively).

I mean a few who haven’t broken through with acting noms – WWDITS, Cobra Kai, Pen15, Also if I’m not mistaken, Insecure and The Good Place though they’ve never been big players.

Re drama, my assumption on lifespan is something like this:

BCS, Killing Eve, Ozark, This Is Us – 2021 (Confirmed)

The Crown, Succession, Handmaid’s Tale, The Mandalorian, Stranger Things, Westworld, Euphoria, Westworld – 2022/2023

    The Boys, Bridgerton – 2024/2025

Which way they turn on drama is hard to tell. Do they concede towards the big genre shows or chose two or three season contemporary dramas? Are there even many being made? I feel like this is where Apple could dominate, it seems like a possible sweet spot.

(I have to say I’d be really unsurprised if Stranger Things announced S4 was their last and I feel fairly similar about Westworld too. Euphoria seems like a short 3-4 season show and whilst TMS COULD go multiple seasons whether the cast would want to go past 3 is another thing.)

The first show that came to my mind was Friday Night Lights.

I don’t know if it counts, but Law and Order SVU was eligible for the first time for 2000 awards, but Mariska Hargitay first nomination was in 2004, even with guest nominations in 2000, 2002 and 2003.

Also, wasn’t Cagney and Lacey snubbed for the first season?

The former three did have at least one either Primetime or Creative Arts during its freshman season and whilst the latter two didn’t break until their 2nd seasons, they did have critics support from the very beginning.

Assuming just based on recent history, unless it’s a first season breakout, we’re likely already aware of big players future.

The Boys went above the line this year- not their favorite show but an upward trajectory.

OMG, the way I forgot about Perry Mason.  Yes, you’re right, it’ll probably outlive them all. Even if it misses in a heavier ’22 field it could really benefit from the clear out.

Lupin probably has legs. Does Squid Game actually have the capacity to be more than a one-season obsession? Will Loki go more than two?
