Two close calls.
Penn gives a technical, near perfect perf.
Rourke plays it from his soul.I’d have given it to Micky.
Cotillard has that “Oscary” moment. Christie is cold yet heartbreaking.
My vote was with the sublime Julie.
But hey, I’m biased.ReplyThe Sunne in Splendour.
I prefer my roses whiteMarch 11, 2022 at 3:16 pm #1204841669The Sean Penn/Mickey Rourke was what happens when you have someone playing a person who’s extremely related to American culture. Rourke won both awards given out by non american voting bodies, but Milk prevailed at the end because it was the stronger film and won two awards. Just another example of how having a powerful narrative (like Rourke had) isn’t the end all or be all.
However, I believe Rourke would have won if they were up against each other in 2022. I think backlash would hurt Sean Penn and Milk.

I vote for Mickey Rourke. I think Sean Penn is Very Overrated in Hollywood

I hear it was more “I don’t know Rourke. I met Penn several times”. Mickey Rourke is an Outsider in Hollywood

I don’t sure about those awful rumours. I remember when Michael Keaton lost the rumour was “Keaton is unlikeable”. I totally disagree. Keaton is a super reserved man. Keaton loves to be alone

Not so unusual I suppose.ReplyCopy URLThe Sunne in Splendour.

Cotillard and Christie shouldn’t have been nominated. I love Cotillard but that performance is overrated because of the makeup job and biopic angle, it’s a whole lot of histrionics and didn’t make me feel the soul of Edith Piaf. Meanwhile Christie does fine work but is far from displaying the full depth of what alzheimers does to a person.
