So I did a bit of research and found that no one has started a thread on this topic yet. Now that I’ve seen every single Oscar winner for Best Actress from the 1960s, here’s how I rank them:

1. Elizabeth Taylor-Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
2. Anne Bancroft-The Miracle Worker
3. Barbra Streisand-Funny Girl
4. Katharine Hepburn-The Lion in Winter
5. Sophia Loren-Two Women
6. Patricia Neal-Hud
7. Katharine Hepburn-Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner
8. Julie Christie-Darling
9. Julie Andrews-Mary Poppins
10. Maggie Smith-The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
11. Elizabeth Taylor-Butterfield 8

Elizabeth Taylor will be the bookends, but aside from her and Hepburn’s 67 win, this decade was FANTASTIC for Actress winners. Even for the people I wouldn’t have voted for are pretty great in their own right.

#1-Taylor, WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?
#2-Hepburn, LION IN WINTER
#3-Smith
#4-Loren
#5-Bancroft (fantastic win but I would’ve given it to Hepburn over her)
#6-Streisand (Hepburn deserved it alone)
#7-Christie
#8-Neal
#9-Andrews (Bancroft, probably)
#10-Hepburn, GUESS (Evans)
#11-Taylor, BUTTERFIELD 8 (definitely MacLaine)

This is probably the best decade for actress wins (though the 80’s are pretty close behind).

I’d say:

1. Taylor – Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
2. Streisand – Funny Girl
3. Hepburn – The Lion in Winter
4. Bancroft – The Miracle Worker
5. Loren – Two Women
6. Smith – The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
7. Hepburn – Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner
8. Patricia Neal – Hud
9. Christie – Darling
10. Andrews – Mary Poppins
11. Taylor – Butterfield 8

Really the top 8/9 are all brilliant winners, especially the first 4

I’m shocked at how many people rank Christie so low and that they rank Hepburn in 67 (a competent but autopilot performance) above her. I don’t think a lot really see the complexity she brings to a very tricky role, which might have something to do with her minimalist/sketchbook acting style that some don’t respond to easily.

Let me preface this by saying outside of the academy choosing any of these performances as the best of the year none of these are bad, not even Taylor. For me ranking has a lot to do with fine lines. Although I think Christie is a marvelous actress, love her in all of her other nominated works as well as “Don’t Look Now”, I never cared for “Darling” as a whole. I did like “Guess Who’s Coming To Diner?” better and that’s how Hepburn managed to place above Christie. After watching “Darling” (only once) I felt it was a chore checked off because of the Oscar relationship. I never really felt much care for the story, style or character per the story. Again Christie gave a fine performance but those small degrees of separation make my own rankings happen.

As for the Oscars specifically (or any of the other awards of the year) I don’t think Christie would have won without the one-two punch including “Doctor Zhivago” plus the Oscars were not very interested in giving Andrews two in a row.
