I’m posting this again because apparently the first 2 don’t work. Sorry for the spamming.
Here are mine:
– Sissy Spacek – 3 women
Throughout the whole film she was able to showcase a lot of range, going from weirdly child-like and timid to confident and even selfish at times. That particular scene just blew my mind. She was able to convey so much emotion with just this look.
– Shelley Duvall – 3 women
While Sissy had a showier role, she arguably had the harder role to pull through. While Spacek had the drastic transformation, the film depended on Duvall’s ability to subtly change her manners in order to convey the “morphing” of the two women.
– Judy Holliday – Bells Are Ringing
Judy Holliday is just such a joy to watch. Her comedic timing and charm are in full display in this movie.
– Sandy Dennis – Come Back to the 5 and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean
She’s the one that stood out in this incredible ensemble. This chracter is so hard to understand because Dennis brought such a specific and weird nuance to it. No one could have played it the way she did and the way she portrayed the obsession and slow descent into craziness is amazing.
– Liv Ullman – Autumn Sonata
Both leads are absolutely brilliant there but Liv is the MVP for me. Obviously she has a lot of showy material in the second half but my favorite scene of hers is the one in which she listens to her mother play the piano and all the troubles of their relationship come back to her. Perfect acting.
– Ingrid Thulin – Cries and Whispers
A portrayal that’s so haunting and raw that it becomes absolutely terrifying.
– Katharine Hepburn – The Philadelphia Story
What is there to say here? That performance is a classic and a gift that we might not deserve.
– Juliette Binoche – The Lovers on the Bridge
This miserable and ugly role is a real showcase for Binoche and she is heartbreaking throughout. Each of her scenes is so energetic and filled with genuine emotions.
– Anne Dorval – Mommy
She’s loud and over the top but also visceral and intense. She grabs your attention from the first scene and you can’t look away til the very end. She also has that scene at some point that just tears your heart out. I know the film has it’s detractors but it’s hard to not admire her acting.
– Tatyana Samoylova – The Cranes Are Flying
Such a moving performance. Her face is so expressive and she brilliantly succeeds in showcasing the consequences of war on regular people.
