I doubt Traffic. GLADIATOR was like Return of the King and Titanic. Only those 3 movies were popular between non cinephiles

 Gladiator
 Mulholland Drive/Gosford Park/Moulin Rouge!
 Chicago
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (the most iconic movie of the year)
 Brokeback Mountain (💯 sure)
Little Miss Sunshine (aged better than The Departed and nowadays family movies are being appreciated)
There Will Be Blood (this has aged better than No Country For Old Men)
 Slumdog Millionaire
The Hurt Locker (the narrative of the first female directed picture to win would be irrestible)
