In a drama series field as stacked as this a lot of the discussions when it comes to nominations has understandably been placed on potential breakthroughs for shows like Yellowstone and buzzy new series like Severance and Yellowjackets. However I just was curious as to what people’s thoughts were on the chances of returning drama series contenders that either under-performed the last time they contended (Better Call Saul, Stranger Things) or have returned after hiatuses with less chatter and passion (Killing Eve, The Morning Show) at breaking into drama series? Will voters shut out the old in favour of the new this year, will the veteran drama contenders triumph over the newbies when it comes to a nomination in drama series or a mix of both? Which shows are likeliest to bounce back from their previous misfortunes and which ones have rather dismal fortunes?

Better Call Saul: Consistently critically raved and yet to have missed a drama series nomination. However, in spite of airing close to voting, it also had its worst above the line performance at the Emmys last season with both Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks getting dropped in nominations for the first time. It returns this cycle with the first half of its final season.

Killing Eve: In spite of an underwhelming reception and guild performance Killing Eve over-performed our expectations last time it was eligible by clinging on to its drama series, actress x2 and supporting actress nominations. However to say the reception to the show this time round was underwhelming would be an understatement.

The Morning Show: In spite of being Apple’s flagship show, the 2nd most nominated drama by the actors branch last time round and receiving a directing nomination for Mimi Leder, The Morning Show missed a nomination in drama series. However in spite of a polarising second season the show attracted additional WGA, SAG, ADG and PGA nominations that it did not successfully attain for its first season.

Stranger Things: Two years ago for the first time in the show’s Emmy history Stranger Things almost got completely shut out above the line. However it still got a drama series nomination. For the first time in the show’s history it will have episodes released a couple of weeks before Emmy voting begins.

This is Us: In spite of a weaker field at the guild awards This is Us failed to attract any steam and got shut out entirely at SAG for the first time in 5 years. However it is still an incumbent drama series nominee and the last great network drama standing airing its final season.

FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

Better Call Saul – Final season. Bob nearly died on set. Cranston and Paul are coming back in some form. Has all the makings to rebound from last time.

Both Better Call Saul and Stranger Things will be in. Everyone’s underestimating how big of a passion base the series has and the impact it might have when it blows viewing records out of the water so close to Emmy nominations voting (Part 1) or Emmy winners voting (Part 2)

Makes me sad as a big fan that This Is Us is seeming more and more unlikely by the day. Apart from a few tweets appreciating Mandy Moore’s performance early in the season, there hasn’t been much buzz around it whatsoever.

Better Call Saul & Stranger Things are poised to perform well this time around, they’re airing at the right time and have substantial pre-release hype.

I’m quite surprised by how much agreement there is here.
