My favourite now annual thread.
Limited Series is more packed than ever. What’s going to succeed and where will the missteps lie?
There’s actually too many options for a poll but I’ve gone for the 9 most notable.
Anatomy of a Scandal – Fresh from Nine Perfect Strangers, a David E. Kelley adaptation of the bestselling novel. Starring BAFTA nominee Sienna Miller, 4x Emmy nominee Michelle Dockery, Emmy nominee Rupert Friend. Netflix.
The Dropout – Amanda Seyfriend hits TV as the notorious Elizabeth Holmes. Based on the hit podcast. Also starring Naveen Andrews, William H. Macy and Laurie Metcalf. Hulu.
The First Lady – An anthology series covering the lives of three First Ladies. Directed by Emmy winner Suzanne Bier. Led by Gillian Anderson, Viola Davis, Michelle Pfeiffer alongside Kiefer Sutherland, O. T. Fagbenle and Aaron Eckhart. Showtime.
Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story – The latest out of the Ryan Murphy Netflix factory. Evan Peters steps up as serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. Murphy is yet to have a critically acclaimed Netflix series. But he’s also yet to have one that didn’t get an acting Emmy nomination/win.
The Offer – The story of the production of The Godfather told by an Oscar nominated screenwriter and the director of Rocketman. Starring Miles Teller, Matthew Goode and Juno Temple. Paramount+.
Roar – After Netflix screwed them over, the creators of GLOW are back with a half-hour anthology series. Starring Oscar and Emmy winner Nicole Kidman, Oscar and Emmy nominee Cynthia Erivo, 2x Emmy winner Merritt Wever, as well as GLOW leads Alison Brie and Betty Gilpin. Apple TV+.
The Staircase – More true crime and more Oscar winners. This time it’s Colin Firth as Michael Peterson. Joining him are Academy Award nominee and Emmy winner Toni Collette and Academy Award winner Juliette Binoche. HBO Max.
Under the Banner of Heaven – Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black adapts the critically acclaimed book. It’s another crime story. This time current Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield heads up with Daisy Edgar Jones, Sam Worthington and Denise Gough in tow.
WeCrashed – Following the collapse of one of the world’s most valuable startups but with one of the writers of Bad Teacher. Academy Award winners Anne Hathaway and Jared Leto star. Apple TV+.
Others include : The Girl from Plainville, Moon Knight, Pieces of Her, Super Pumped, The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, The Thing About Pam

For example, both Monster and Anatomy of a Scandal could easily flop with critics but both make sense as audience hits given their subject matter and that they are on Netflix. Similarly, The First Lady seems one of the most likely to be good but is anyone watching Showtime anymore?

ReplyCopy URLFYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

I also think with some of these shows that whilst they could end up being non-factors in series, their leads could still factor heavily into the acting races. I can see shows like The Girl From Plainville, The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, The Thing About Pam and Pieces of Her just not having the passion or acclaim to be series contenders but Elle Fanning, Samuel L. Jackson, Renee Zellweger and Toni Collette etc all still giving critically acclaimed performances that are very well liked and factor into the race like Ruffalo, McGregor, Spencer and Erivo did these past two Emmy cycles in spite of their shows being non-factors.

February 16, 2022 at 7:33 am #1204804840I get the sense that almost all of these will land in the 50-70 metacritic range like Pam and Tommy. Not scathing reviews but not on top of the world. None of these seem like this years Mare (but at the same time the promo for Mare wad awful so who’s to say?)

I remember everyone thinking Mare was gonna flop

Interesting. I think that there’s definitely a couple here that will be acclaimed. It’s just more of a case of which to me as any could go either way. Currently I’m betting on Under the Banner of Heaven

The point is quite clearly to have a predictions based discussion not a retrospective who could have this and who that. Every thread that gets moved here is essentially DOA.
Sometimes it seems GoldDerby is going to the dogs.
