Inspired by previous threads discussing the acting categories, I’ve decided to start a new one for a different category. Who do you think came closest to getting an Oscar nomination for Best Director in each year? For my guesses, I’ll be going as far back as the beginning of the millennium.

I know, Taika got DGA. But there were politics behind her, and many were even putting her at 5 in their predictions. Just because he got DGA, doesn’t mean he was at 6.

I also think Greta was 6th tbh. Direction wise she was much better than Taika and she also had a lot of goodwill going for her.

I don’t think Greta was even 7th. Waititi was clearly 6th (barf).

If Taika had gotten a nomination somewhere else, like Critic’s Choice or Golden Globe, I would agree.

Interesting how Cooper and Gerwig were both huge, unexpected (to some) snubs. Do the Academy directors not respect the directors of big remakes? AISB and LW were both famous for being the latest in a long string of adaptations, and the Academy overall obviously loved both, but maybe the directors just don’t really want to nominate the director of a story that’s been told and directed a bunch of times before.

I think this is supported by Cooper’s loss in the debut category at DGA. He should have EASILY won that, but Bo Burnham of all people took it over him. I think directors maybe don’t have the tolerance for remakes that the other branches do.

They’re also both actors, Ben Affleck too!

I don’t get this comparison. Cooper hit all the precursors, while Greta had only like Critic’s Choice and her movie had mediocre Guild run. These snubs are not really comparable.

But the academy is still by and large male and allergic to female directors. Also let’s not forget that not only did Taika get the DGA nomination, but he also ended up winning Best Adapted Screenplay.
