Normally, I love reading. I know I don’t always comment much in the book forums, but I read all the time, in addition to seeing a lot of movies and TV shows. I couldn’t find a similar forum like this one, so I thought I’d start one up. I recently read Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 for the first time in anticipation of the upcoming Hulu miniseries, and it was one of the most overrated books I have ever read in my life. I can defend The Great Gatsby, The Grapes Of Wrath and To Kill A Mockingbird as American literature classics, but not Catch-22. Why is this up there with them?!

The characters in this book were unlikable sociopaths, the “humor” was mean-spirited, the “plot” or whatever there was of it was boring and redundant, and none of it makes any sense whatsoever. For a book hailed as a brilliant satire, it’s more absurd and nonsensical that satirical. Plus, it is one of the most misanthropic works I’ve ever read. Maybe the upcoming miniseries makes sense of it, but reading the book was a painful, boring experience that when I was done, I thought, “YES! IT’S ALL OVER!”

There, I got that all off of my chest. Any classic novels you hate as much as I hate Catch-22?

I don’t hate this novel by any means, but when I read The Great Gatsby during my senior year of high school, I just did not get it. Both of the film adaptations I’ve seen (from 1974 and 2013) didn’t do me any favors either.

Catcher In The Rye. Absolutely hated it. Pretentious, Dull and vastly overrated. I was about 22 when I decided to read it; I was going through a phase where I wanted to read a bunch of novels that are considered classics. But I only made it mid-way through this book before I put it down never to pick it up again. Just couldn’t take it. I hated it so much it put an end to that phase I was going through.

In school, I loathed The Scarlet Letter. Even as a 10th-grader, I recognized the symbolism as eye-rollingly obvious. Also hated An American Tragedy. Two hundred pages of story stretched out to about a zillion pages, like the author was being paid by the word. We watched the film version (A Place in the Sun) after reading the book and I applauded that for recognizing the book for what it was–a cheesy pulp story.

I think Toni Morrison is just Zora Neale Hurston with swear words.
