I would have totally watched a Samantha-in-LA spinoff with the movies as a segue.
Oscar changes afoot! Sound off on them here.August 8, 2018 at 11:38 am #1202605547
Bullshit. American filmdom’s alleged highest honor and you’re relegating some to the commercial breaks. If you wanted the ceremony to be shorter, cut out the tryhard skits and monologues that are forgotten within days after the Oscars. The choice of new category shits over all the other more interesting ones they could have added, you can’t even award it to any one person because a movie being popular could be the responsibility of the director/distributor/actors/writers/etc., and how do you award someone for a film being popular when they don’t even really have control over it the same way you can control your acting performance or screen direction, and who is even voting for it, and not only is it not going to bring in a recovery in viewership (2018 Grammys sank even after majorly cutting out what’s being broadcast and relying on live performances) it just comes off as a People’s Choice, which the Oscars should never be. So yes. I can and will judge this choice immediately without seeing how it actually develops lol. Of course, I’ll still be watching in February. But. Bullshit.

The point of the Oscars is to run forever and celebrate craftspersonship, so I couldn’t be more unhappy with the decision to not air some of the below-the-line categories.
Best Popular Feature is an unnecessary and blatantly populist addition for multiple reasons already stated on this forum.
I can only hope neither will be repeated next year.
That said, I understand that changes have to be made when less and less people tune in to watch such an expensive production. The broadcast has to appeal to an audience beyond cinephiles.

Utter garbage. So does Best Popular Feature mean that the winner of the traditional Best Picture award is the Best Unpopular Feature? And I’m assuming a film can’t compete in both categories, so now producers of a popular film that may have a chance to make the BP cut would have to decide whether to go the safe route or take the chance. I hope the studios stand up to this fuckery and refuse to support the new category.

They really have to define the parameters of “Best Popular Film.” If it’s solely box office receipts, that’s crass as hell on the Academy’s part and clearly meant as a Best Disney/Marvel production award. Very foul, ABC. Didn’t the Oscars learn from that terrible year where they presented “tech” awards in the aisles and made the nominees stand on stage to save time? If I were a costume designer, sound mixer, film editor, makeup artist, animated shorts director, etc., I’d boycott the shit out next year’s Oscars. The Academy cares nothing about you now. Do them the same way in kind. The earlier telecast date will only make the awards season that much more rushed with the other awards groups announcing earlier. The one-week qualifiers will rightfully suffer, but hopefully this finally means earlier release dates for those who don’t have the “privilege” of living in NYC or LA.

I am against it whole heartedly … The oscar telecast isnt going to get new viewers ever in my opnion … why do they think a bunch of 20 somethings will start watching if they already didnt watch them , just so they can see Kevin Fiege win an Oscar … even us who love the movies and the awards dont know all the producers…. if they want to increase viewers then add voice over … or ensemble something where the “stars” could win …. not some MTV movies award bull shit… and as far as making it shorter , i think they could get rid of the host all together … start the show , have actually nominees present the awards ( not Prianka Chopra and the rock ) and just move the show along … no gags , no long winded dumb intos from people who are not funny… just give out the awards …

I am also against it. I hate the idea of a film award based on box-office receipts. Big hit movies do make it into best picture already (“Get Out”, “Dunkirk”, “Gravity”, “Up”, etc.) and this will just make it less likely that acclaimed, big-budget, genre fare makes it into best picture when they have their own category. This just seems an attempt for superhero movies to bully their way into the Oscars when they are already being awarded with box office receipts. I also do not think it is fair that behind the scenes people do not get their day in the sun. And the saddest thing of all is none of these changes will likely get results. I do not think it is the movies being nominated that are decimating Oscar numbers but the amount of other options available on cable and streaming. They will ruin the Academy Awards and it will still rank amongst the lowest seen Oscars because that is the new reality.

They need a voiceover category.August 9, 2018 at 7:10 pm #1202606571
Same question.August 9, 2018 at 7:19 pm #1202606578
I actually find it really sad. For almost 30 years the stunt guild have lobbied, campaigned and begged the Academy to add a Stunt category, and they have rejected it every single year. But when Bob Iger wants a category for his films he gets it. Stuntmen & women risk their lives for the benefit of moviegoers. If moviegoers get an Audience Award they should instead reject the Academy’s proposed category and make them implement a Stunt Co-Ordination/Choreography category. And if they want a spike in ratings they can actually have the stunt people do a 5 minute act instead of sending stars to a movie theater across the street so they can promote a Disney film (ABC is so fucking transparent). Aren’t the stunts the main reason why people go to watch the big blockbusters? Also if they do implement a stunt category, they need to recognize the stunt-people of the past, from Safety Last to Baby Driver, Buster Keaton to Jackie Chan.
