None were at any risk but I’m guessing Driver was a less distant #2 to Phoenix than the other #2’s to the winners in their respective categories.
Which of the following female directors would you say has the best shot at landing a Best Director nod in the next Oscars? Why? (In case I’m forgetting someone, feel free to pick outside of the list.)
Sara Colangelo, What Is Life Worth
Gia Coppola, Mainstream
Sofia Coppola, On the Rocks
Ava DuVernay, The New Gods
Maya Forbes, The Good House
Rebecca Hall, Passing
Mia Hansen-Love, Bergman Island
Eliza Hittman, Never, Rarely, Sometimes, Always
Lisa Joy, Reminiscence
Regina King, One Night in Miami
Phyllida Lloyd, Herself
Reed Morano, The Rhythm Section
Nila Neugenbauer, Red, White and Water
Gina Prince-Bythewood, The Old Guard
Marjane Satrapi, Radioactive
Cate Shortland, Black Widow
Julie Taymor, The Glorias: My Life on the Road
Liesl Tommy, Respect

Zhao for Nomadland seems to have major awards potential, but I do hope she’s not the sole woman vying for a nod. Sofia Coppola could join her, so could Nila Neugenbauer. I also wouldn’t underestimate Julie Taymor.

Do you guys think Billie Eilish can make her enormous success last for a decade? She’s grown so much so fast that I don’t know if she can sustain it, especially if she wins an Oscar. Getting even bigger after that would be difficult.February 15, 2020 at 9:29 am #1203347724

re. the billie question
there haven’t been many debuts that can be compared to hers, it’s not just a great artist arriving on the scene with a bang, but stirring a major shift in the aesthetic of mainstream music. she’s not comparable to lorde or avril lavigne because with everything leading up, the release of her album was already an event. she’s got an audience that is ready to see her do whatever, and will ensure her records sell for the next few years even if she doesn’t come up with something as radio-ready as bad guy.
qualitatively I think she and finneas have at least 2-3 good albums in them, I don’t know if they’ll be as good as the debut only because not many albums are as good as her debut, but it’ll be a while before she runs out of things to say
