Fourth Grand Slam of the year begins today with Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic as top seeds in the singles. Any tennis fans here? What are your thoughts, who do you think will win?
Fingers crossed for Agnieszka Radwańska and Roger Federer, my favorite tennis players.August 25, 2014 at 7:50 am #454935

I think Federer has by far the best draw he will ever have. I’d love to see a deep run in singles from Jack Sock (BEST NAME EVER) and see him and Pospisil get closer to qualifying for the tour finals in doubles (Their draw is wide open.) as well as deep runs from Madison Keys and Coco Vandeweghe. I still think as long as she serves well this is Serena’s to lose. Halep is good but most of her success has been at events missing top players. (She’s never beaten Williams or Sharapova.) Kvitova looked good at New Haven but has never done well here. She also has had trouble against the big guns. Sharapova is a bit like Williams but her serve gives her more trouble. I’ll be curious to see how Bouchard does. She’s made at least the semis in the last three slams but since Wimbledon her tune ups were outright disasters.
Stat to watch out for: if Federer wins and Djokovic fails to make the final, Federer takes the lead in the race for #1. For Halep to become #1, she must win and have Serena fall in the quarters or earlier. For Kvitova, she must win and have Serena fall in the round of 16 or earlier.August 25, 2014 at 10:18 am #454937
Yep, Roger can win it this time and it would be a great thing after so many successes this year.
Simona Halep dropped the first set against US wildcard, Danielle Rose Collins and for a while now it looked like upset could happen but eventually No. 2 seed won in 3 sets, losing only 3 games in 2 sets that followed.
Nice win for Aga, 12 consecutive games after dropping first game against Sharon Fichman.
Bouchard is interesting. She had her chances and took it, which is a sign of great player although on Wimbledon she had the greatest luck possible. Cornet and Kerber eliminated Williams and Sharapova for her and then couldn’t hold their games. Eugenie never had a chance against Petra Kvitova in top form but 3 consecutive Grand Slam semi-finals are still impressive. I don’t know how about you but IMO the most recent Wimbledon was pretty much anticlimatic on the Women’s side with only few classics (the only ones I can think are Kerber/Sharapova and Kvitova/Williams V) but quarters, semis and final were rather boring. Better with Men’s Singles though.
And true, Pospisil and Sock were amazing in their Doubles final performance against Bryan brothers.August 25, 2014 at 10:33 am #454938
It seems silly not to predict Serena Wiliams for women. Men looks likely to go to Federer but Djokovic is regardless of his warm up performances an extremely strong US Open competitor.August 25, 2014 at 11:52 pm #454939

It always is but she will have to win 7 matches in a row. This year she won 6 matches in all 3 Grand Slams combined. She’s certainly the frontrunner but anything can happen.August 26, 2014 at 12:21 am #454940
As a Canadian, I hope Raonic and Bouchard both make deep runs like in Wimbledon. As a tennis fan, I think Federer vs. Djokovic final would be another thriller like in Wimbledon. I’m kind of hopeful that happens, but as long as Federer makes it far, good tennis will follow. I got to see him at the Rogers Cup, and he was just as flawless as always.
I actually think Serena will go out in the middle rounds, and I’m picking Halep as the Dark Horse winner. But again, Bouchard FTW.

I think Venus will win Halep’s quarter of the draw.August 26, 2014 at 8:08 am #454942
^Wow, that would be quite the achievement. I know she’s currently on a bit of a roll, but making the semi finals would be a whole other level.

Oh I misspoke. I meant she’d get to the quarters out of that section.August 26, 2014 at 9:22 am #454944
^Where she would presumably lose to Sharapova? I would see that as being more likely, but it still think that Halep is strong enough on hard court that she could advance. But Venus/Halep would be a great matchup, so I hope that happens.

Venus/Halep is round of 16. Winner of that hits Sharapova if she gets that far. Really that quarter isn’t a slam dunk for anyone.August 26, 2014 at 10:35 am #454946

That was a huge upset there, who do you think has the best chance now in her quarter? I guess Kerber, but she didn’t play very well in her first match.
