    Best Actor
    1. Antonio Banderas, Pain & Glory
    2. Eddie Murphy, Dolemite Is My Name
Closest Runner-Up: Jonathan Pryce, The Two Popes

    — Antonio Banderas doesn’t have the showiest role in his film. It’s not a typical Oscar contender – most of the emotional beats are internal and not external. Pain and Glory” finds director Salvador Mallo, (Antonio Banderas in a career-best performance and clearly modelled on Almodóvar), looking back over his life and loves as he deals with his addictions, his chronic pain and a newfound appreciation of his work. In the film, Banderas folds into himself, collapsing his mythos to find a new emotional high.

    — Ed-E… Ed-E… yeah, it’s nice to see Eddie back on the big screen in a big role. “Dolemite is my name” is one of my favourite movies of the year so far along with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Parasite. It’s largely down to the career best performance by Eddie Murphy, who is simply mesmerizing as Rudy Ray Moore. He brings so much energy to this role, along with his charm and humour. Eddie has never been this funny.

    Best Actress
    1. Lupita Nyong’o, Us
    2. Awkwafina, The Farewell
Closest Runner-Up: Scarlett Johansson, Marriage Story

    — In US, Nyong’o has the chance to go from 0 to 11 in a matter of minutes. Tasked with not just one character, but 2 very different characters, each performance feels lived. One, very much human, quiet, tasked and conflicted. The other: animalistic, fleshly and soulless. Nyong’o’s career has been an interesting one. Following an Oscar win for her breakout role, she was tasked with mo-cap and voice-over supporting roles at Disney until they finally came to their senses and put her in her first lead role, Queen of Katwe and eventually a supporting turn in their mega-hit Black Panther. In US, she reaches a new high and finally lives up to the promise she showed in 12 Years a Slave.

    — Awkwafina stars as a young Asian-American professional woman in this down-to-earth, insightful film about a Chinese family that confronts the discovery of an aging grandmother being diagnosed with an advanced stage of cancer. It’s a brilliant ensemble cast (SAG awards, what happened?!), and everyone pulls their weight. Even the minor members of the cast are superb: Aoi Mizuhara in particular displays acute awkwardness brilliantly! But leading the charge is Awkwafina. She was in the disappointing “Ocean’s 8” but much more memorable in “Crazy Rich Asians” as Rachel’s wacky Singapore friend. Here it’s a bravado performance that is genuinely moving. Awkwafina sheds her usual persona to take on this role and she is truly fantastic as the sulky but emotionally crushed teen.

    Best Supporting Actor
    1. Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
    2. Al Pacino, The Irishman
Closest Runner-Up: Joe Pesci, The Irishman

    — “Once Upon a Time . . . in Hollywood” is a star vehicle; Tarantino provides DiCaprio and Pitt with a showcase that allows them to deliver, separately and together, a series of iconic moments that leap out of the film, ready-made to be excerpted in trailers and impressed in viewers’ memory. They’re the kind of moments that DiCaprio delivers, for instance, when he lends Rick a cheesy megawatt grin during an interview, or that Pitt delivers when Cliff, preparing to smoke an LSD-laced cigarette that he has been saving for a special occasion, freezes in place and, lighting it, purrs, “And away we go.” They are a middle-aged two-man army battling Sixties youth culture as it discards all norms and steers the culture into a ditch. At the bottom of that ditch is the gruesome reality of the Manson Family murders that took place in the closing weeks of the Sixties. It was a stark announcement to everyone that the hippies had gotten out of hand.

    — Pacino. Al Pacino. Hoo-Hah! When was the last time you saw Al Pacino give a really good performance? Well that’s exactly what he does here and it feels so good to see him find his glory days. He is his usual shouty self but shines better when he tones it down and let expressions speak.

    Best Supporting Actress
    1. Zhao Shuzhen, The Farewell
    2. Margot Robbie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Closest Runner-Up: Tomasin McKenzie, Jojo Rabbit

    — Shuzhen Zhao steals the show in her very first movie as headstrong elderly lady with a heart of gold. She’s funny, down to Earth, and absolutely heartbreaking. It’s a brilliant performance from a phenomenal older Chinese actress and I hope she’s remembered come award season.

    — Margot may have a showier role in Bombshell, but I would argue that THIS is the showier role. Robbie’s Sharon is definitely a supporting role but also the film’s angelic spirit, a sunny soul dealing with her own issues who’s tied inextricably to surrounding figures. Her real-life fate hangs over the film like a specter and offers an interesting built-in tension Tarantino uses to fuel an entertaining yet wanting entry in his infamous oeuvre.

I should note that I have yet to see The Irishman, Marriage Story, and some other noteworthy contenders.

    Best Picture:

    The Lighthouse

    Parasite

    Best Director:

    Bong Joon-ho (Parasite)

    Robert Eggers (The Lighthouse)

    Best Actor:

    Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse)

Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood)

Pattinson really stands above all others thus far. Joaquin Phoenix and Song Kang-ho are also close up there as well.

    Best Actress:

    Lupita Nyong’o (Us)

    Awkwafina (The Farewell)

Admittedly I haven’t seen a lot of the current frontrunners in the Best Actress race, but I expect these two tenacious performances to remain in my top five at the very least.

    Best Supporting Actor:

    Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse)

Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood)

    Best Supporting Actress:

    Shuzhen Zhao (The Farewell)

    Cho Yeo-Jeong  (Parasite)

Were it not for Parasite and The Farewell this would be a pretty weak category in all honesty. Taylor Russel is also really good in Waves, and Juliette Binoche’s performance in High Life also deserves mention.

    Best Original Screenplay:

    Parasite

    The Lighthouse (virtual tie)

    Best Adapted Screenplay:

    Jojo Rabbit

How to Train Your Dragon 3

Haven’t seen The Irishman so this category is pretty bare boned at the moment.

    Best Cinematography:

    The Lighthouse

    Climax

    Best Editing:

    Parasite

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
