The great story from Laurie’s bio is that her husband was a film critic for the Village Voice at the time. He knew DePalma’s work from the Phantom of the Paradise so he told her DePalma makes horror comedies. So Laurie showed up at the first day of rehearsals with a comic performance in mind. She was then shocked at how seriously Sissy Spacek was playing the scenes. She called her husband and said I don’t think this is a comedy.
I think that is why the performance is so great. It is both scary and dark but with a bit of madcap humor to it.
